Things that make my heart hurt: the fact that no matter what, the Lightning don’t get the love that they deserve. Recognition when they do well? Sure. But people actually caring about the team? Wow.

Lightning narratives that warm my heart:

Steven Stamkos - captain. 60-goal scorer (2011-12). Has struggled with unlucky injuries his whole career, but always come back stronger than ever. Extreme loyalty to Tampa, turning down bigger money from other teams to stay with the Lightning in 2016.

Nikita Kucherov - 40-goal scorer. Third person in Lightning history to reach 100 points in a season, after Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis both in 2006-2007. Doesn’t talk much, takes none of your bullshit. Came back to Tampa in July (from Russia) to work on his hockey

Victor Hedman - Swedish Norris-caliber defenseman. Also loyal and signed with the Lightning long-term. Has an amazing friendship with Stammer.

Tyler Johnson - undrafted and undersized. Told all his life that he’d never make it because of his size; was going to play college hockey in Canada instead of joining the NHL. Ended up a Calder Finalist for best rookie in 2014 and the leading scorer during the Lightning’s 2015 run to the SCF.

Ondrej Palat - drafted 207th overall, literally the fourth-last pick. Ended up a Calder Finalist for best rookie in 2014, alongside linemate Tyler Johnson.

Brayden Point - drafted in the third round despite having the skills to be a first-round pick. Also told all his life he’d never make it because of his size. Now has 60+ points in his sophomore season while playing mostly a shutdown role

Yanni Gourde - undrafted and undersized. In 2013-2014 was playing in the ECHL with barely a chance of ever making the NHL. Signed a tryout with the Lightning’s AHL affiliate, worked his way up from there. Now a rookie with 64 points, breaking the Lightning record for most rookie goals (25) and points.

Louis Domingue - NHL career was over earlier this season. Got traded to the Lightning to play on the AHL team, got called up as Vasy’s backup when Budaj got injured, now the Lightning’s backup goalie

Andrei Vasilevskiy - works too hard. Has to be told to get off the ice. Really quiet, private, and likes cats a lot. Had a really sweet relationship with Ben Bishop before Bish’s trade

There are obviously others on the team, and players that I adore a lot, but these are just the ones whose stories keep me up at night.
