Fluids

What type? Probably saline. How much? Lots, unless it’s heartfailure and even thrn you want iv access.

Oxygen

Everything likes oxygen. Start flow by and make sure the airway is clear. If not, intubate.

Pain relief

And for veterinary patients the sedating effect is very handy. You can assume most of your emergencies will have some pain, or panic and you can deal with both. If they’re not painful, decide now.

And that’s your big three. Get on them, or get your nurses/techs on them so they’re busy and gets you a minute of thinking time.

Next step: more information

Now you’ve got stabilisation started and everybody looks busy, you plan. Remember you are steering the ship, not manning the sails and the next thing you need is more information. That’s case dependant, but might mean: blood pressure monitors, ecg, ultrasound, xray, blood tests, etc. At the very least it’s heart rate and temperature, get any nurses/techs looking for orders onto those while you start a more specific exam relevant to the emergency.

Third step: owner communication and treatment

Now the patient is hopefully being stabilised, monitored and at least part way to a diagnosis, talk to the owners about either a further diagnostic plan, prognosis, and treatment. And if any staff member is still looking for something to do, get them to start setting up for treatment.

Oh, and nurses/techs can absolutely prompt their baby vets if you see them freeze.

You can ask if they want fluids, yes or no. Oxygen. Pain relief. Xrays set up, etc. Just one question at a time, one step, at a time.

It will become automatic eventually.
