I decided to start knitting again because my dad had some leftover yarn that he gave me but as soon as I started I remembered how much knitting sucks when you have carpel tunnel

I’ve gotta knit slowly to keep my hands healthy. And yeah fine life isn’t a race or whatever but I wanna knit real fast

I’m making something with a lot of purl stitching in order to slow down because for some reason I never did figure out how to purl efficiently. I’ve made washcloths and other things that require some complex patterns but I still never figured out how to do it quickly.

This is so funny to me because crochet is some sort of impossible dark magic that makes me cry in frustration whenever I try it but knitting in contrast is so much easier to keep under control

Crochet is easy. It's just counting.

Knitting, however, requires me to move both my hands at once, and they're doing different things.

Doesn’t crochet also require the use of both hands? Also I hate counting. Knitting requires much less counting.

You use one hand to crochet and the other to hold your project and tension your yarn (which really just means running your yarn through your fingers--it's brainless), so kind of? But not really.

Also just to be clear when I say counting, I mean like "okay this stitch requires a starting chain of multiples of three, plus two. *a sufficient number of one-two-threes later* aaaaand...two. Okay. Next step."

If you're following a pattern then it's more involved, yeah, but I've been freehanding this shit for 23 years and I'm not stopping now.

Your off hand doesn’t need to move at all in knitting and I have never once figured out how to keep tension while crocheting. It really seems like an impossible task to me. Also three loops in one step? That’s two more than I have to deal with.

Also as I said in another reblog, knitters who can only use one hand for whatever reason can use these specialized clamps to hold one of the needles for them

Speaking of knitting my grandmother doesn’t know how to knit or crochet and for a long time she was under the impression that because I know how to knit I must be very good at tying knots.

Surprisingly though knitting involves very little knot tying so like. I know how to make a slip knot and that’s basically it.

You tie basically two knots when knitting. One at the beginning and one at the end and basically everything in between is held in place by those two knots.

Making fabric is like uh. Controlled tangling.

Not chrochet but... a sewing project I did while trying to convince myself that I would regret doing a larger sewing project.

The hubris is winning, this project has convinced me that I not only can but should do the larger project. (I will regret this.)

I wanted to post about this because I know many of my mutuals are avid crafters and I don't know how much attention this endeavour is getting outside of end-of-life spaces-

The Loose Ends Project matches crafters with a project that is unfinished because of death or disability. They offer help with a spectrum of textile mediums in over 80 countries. One project I find particularly lovely: “My mom was making this octopus for me. She was 67 years old when she passed away from COPD. She was hospitalized for pulmonary rehab several times and would always take it to work on while she was there and loved to talk about it with people."

(the red heart marks the last stitch made by this person's mom) Anyway, if something like this is something you'd like to be involved in, they are always looking for more crafters <3

My favourite recent finishing project that they posted about wasn't precisely something that the crafter left unfinished. The knitter in question had had dementia, and thought she was knitting scarves. So a finisher was found to piece all the little bits of knitting together into a blanket.

Making a weighted velvet baikal seal plushie :3

Head and tail end are stuffed w ultra plush fiber fill and the bulk of the body is packed full of weighted pellets that have a nice crunchy sound when you squeeze it. Not weighed yet, but it feels between 1.5 - 2lbs?
