Could you tell that Fanny Price would undoubtedly end up with Edmund? Or did it change your mind when Henry Crawford came and and entered the scene?

I’ll be honest, first time I read Mansfield Park, I was not unspoiled as to how things would end. Whether or not Fanny was bound to be with Edmund is hard to say—we get some misdirects with other heroines who form fleeting and shallow attachments to other gentlemen (or the idea of that gentleman,) such as Elizabeth Bennet’s liking for Wickham, or Emma Woodhouse’s figuring she ought to be in love with Frank Churchill because it seems like the right thing to do. Or even Marianne Dashwood’s genuine feelings for Willoughby—doesn’t mean she ends up with him!

Fanny sees so little of wider society, though, and in herself is such a steadfast character, that it seems like a lot needs to happen for her to firstly get over Edmund and secondly form an attachment to someone else and thirdly that someone else is Henry Crawford and yes he’s charming but he’s kind of a snake to flirt with an engaged woman AND to toy with Julia at the same time, and then later to toy with Fanny, at first. I’m not gonna say I saw the ending coming all along, but in this particular case there would need to be a lot happening to change situations, hearts, and minds, before Henry can have a real shot at winning Fanny over from Edmund.

I wanted her to be with Henry and I’m still mad that he messed things up. Aside from the fact that I was grossed out she and Edmund were cousins, I thought Fanny made more sense with Henry.

I don’t think I knew about the book before joining a Jane Austen Book Club. By the time we got to Mansfield Park, I knew that the heroine would end up with the first main guy introduced. So I figured Fanny would end up with Edmund. So even though I shipped her and Henry, I was never convinced it would happen.

This thread reminds me of a story from college. On the day we were going to discuss the last few chapters of Emma, I was sitting on a bench outside the classroom door, doodling and waiting for the previous class to finish and file out. A guy walked up to me, and rather than describe him, other than to say that he was huge, white, and wearing a sports jersey, I’ll just call on you to insert the image your imagination conjures of the most stereotypical meathead athlete you could picture. He was in the class, but since I sat in the front and answered questions a lot, he knew me better than I knew him.

“Hey,” he said.

“Um, hi?”

“You do the reading?”

“Yeah,” I said, wondering where this was going to lead.

“I didn’t.”

“To be honest, I read it a few years ago, so I just gave it a quick re-read for class,” I was not making myself relatable.

“So…” He hesitated, then went for it: “I know she’ll say it in class, but I have to know. She got with Knightley, right? I just really don’t want her to get with that douchebag Frank Churchill.”

Literally the only way the fire nation fought enemies was with slow technological veachiles (drills and air boats) and fucking AMBUSHING PEOPLE. AND IT WAS MAINLY AMBUSHING CIVILIANS (against the Geneva Convention). The fire nations army is full of war criminals
