the soft glow of the moonlight filtered through the sheer curtains decorating the windowsills of your shared bedroom. subtle tinges of vanilla essence, wafting around from the dimly-lit candle on the nightstand dissapated amidst the confines of the room. seungmin was always observant - he certainly knew you better than you did. every preference of yours - whether it be the temperature of the apartment thermostat or the amount of creamer you liked in your coffee, it was his to keep and cherish, locked away in the expanse of his mind. today was different though, the night sky was the same cloak of pitch black, the stars painted across the horizon, freckled and pure and the sweet air of seoul, laced with the sugary street-food stall aroma and faint remains of korea's highways. it was a day that marked another year of being together with seungmin.
as the grainy, digital clock on the bedside table struck 12, seungmin propped himself onto his elbows, slightly sitting up - his gaze drifting from the side-table to you.
"happy anniversary, jagi." he said, his voice filled with admiration and sleep.
"happy anniversary, min." you replied, adorning a soft smile.
even whilst you wore mismatched hello kitty and skzoo pajamas, one of your socks off and hidden amidst the covers and your hair slightly tousled from drowsiness, seungmin looked at you as if you'd hung the moon and etched the stars in the sky yourself.
he slightly pushed up, kissing your forehead and tracing your jaw with a reverance boardline worship.
"why are you looking at me like that?" you giggled.
"like what?" he replied, cocking a small smirk.
"i don't know . . like i'm somehow the most important person in the whole world?"
"that's because you are, you know." he replied softly. "you mean so much to me."
his eyes slowly drifted to the warmth of your hand. he brought it up to his lips, landing a sweet kiss on it.
"another year . . time flies. i still remember when you were too shy to ask for my number." you giggled softly, the memory still fresh in your mind.
"yea, guilty as charged." he simply said, a lopsided grin tugging at his mouth.
the room drifted into silence - not awkward silence, but a comforting and nostalgia-filled silence that spoke louder than words alone.
"i was so nervous . ." seungmin began. "i rehearsed what i was going to say at least fifty times."
you turned slightly to look him in the eye, the rumpled reflection of you glistening from his irises. "you were adorable, you know? you were so awkward, i was so close to thinking you were going to combust on the spot."
"hey, it worked didn't it? where are we now?" he huffed, feigning offence, though the corners of his lips betrayed him.
"it sure did."
another pause settled, more prominent this time - but not in a charged way. It was almost reverent, like the two of you were silently acknowledging everything that had led you here. every conversation that bled into the early hours of dawn, every small argument over something so blatantly stupid like who misplaced the tv remote or who forgot to reply to the others text, every laugh that echoed too loudly in quiet places.
seungmin shifted closer, tracing absent-minded patterns with the pads of his fingertips through your button-up top. "i don't think i've explicitly told you this."
"yea?"
"ever since . . we made it official . . years ago, you've changed so much for me. usually, i have alot of regrets. i always think to myself, 'oh seungmin, you could've hit that note more smoother' or 'i could've transposed that key down to make the composition sound more in tune', i think that about everything. but not with you. there was and never will be any regrets when it comes to you. i've learnt to live in the moment with you. i've come to a realisation that i don't feel worried when i'm with you- well . . not in that way, of course i'm always worried about you . . but not in a way that poses any regrets."
"min. . . " you started.
"i love you, y/n. more than anything or anyone. you've made me a better person."
"i love you more, min. happy anniversary. i'm glad it's you."
