BIO.

Having a normal childhood was not really in the cards for Yesenia when she grew up in Texas. From a very young age, the two were determined to raise a successful star. And so they did. From her doing pageants, to dance recitals, and so on, Yesenia didn’t have much for a life that wasn’t exactly what had been planned.

By the time she was 17, she was recruited by an agent, and shipped out to Los Angeles. The only condition to this new fame was graduating high school, which she just barely managed to do. her late teens were spent recording demo tape after demo tape, being a background singer and dancer for Prince, Whitney Houston, among others.

Finally, she broke out with her first hit single which sent her straight to the top. Creating lush and sparkling pop music that made people want to move, and that was what she became known for for decades to come.

Of course, with fame, comes parties, drugs, sex, everything under the sun, which she did, but with her parents wanting to create an icon, it became clear to keep her reckless behavior in check. Pap picks and rumors of her alcohol abuse were paid off, and as far as people were concerned, she was squeaky clean. Even when she married someone less shimmering, the rumors never transferred  on to her.

Her marriage was messy. They were both in music, both extremely influential in what they did and how people viewed them. Their love was intense and with two big personalities, it saw its issues. They were together for fifteen years, but after a big announcement, they separated  ways, with joint custody of their children.

Yesenia hasn’t put out a new album in a decade, having focused on producing, and helping to lift up the future generations of music. But now she’s at a turning point with her ex-husband running around making the worlds best music, as some people say. So what’s a girl to do?

PERSONALITY.

People often say Nia is hard-working. She is a determined woman that once she sets her mind on something, it’s hard to keep her down from accomplishing it. They often say she has a brilliant mind, able to put together songs that make people move, make people feel, and stick in your mind forever. She is generous, wanting to share her connections and her talents with those who could use a leg-up. She’s maternal, after having her children, finds herself wanting to care for others. She’s charming, knows how to have a fun time when she’s tired of her hard work.

However, people also say she’s withdrawn. She lacks trust from her broken relationship with her husband. She’s perhaps a little too attached to her bottle of wine and it can cause issues. Because she’s so concerned for her image, Nia can become rather intense, and ruin a moment, if she feels that it will harm her image. People say that she’s lost her spark, she’s become a shell of her younger self, from the moment she got married to her ex.

damage control. that’s what his publicist was calling it — forcing him to attend galas and events, to go on talk shows, to use instagram (the latter of which he was still refusing — he didn’t get the point of instagram nor did he care to learn). it was about a year too late for that, anyway — now the fact that he was showing up on the red carpet of the vanity fair after party felt like a pathetic plea for help — the industry had already decided how they felt about him, and now he needed to prove himself worthy again. the problem was, he wasn’t sure that he was worthy. 

nearly every time his whiskey glass was dangerously low, he found himself beelining back to the bar to top it off again. by the fifth time, he was well past tipsy, but he needed to be if he was going to last the night, the mind numbing conversations, the smiles of pity from peers he hadn’t worked with in years. after a particularly unsettling conversation with a studio executive, he has to keep his eyes from rolling into the back of his head as he approaches the bar for a sixth time, resting an elbow at the edge of it as he disregards the other person waiting for a drink, and orders his whiskey neat. it isn’t until he turns his head slightly that he catches a glimpse of the person beside him, finding himself doing a double take before letting out a sigh at the confirmation that it is, indeed, of course, yesenia perez. because who else would he have found himself sidled up next to? "i’m on my sixth, what glass are you on?” he asks, voice even, an attempt to be cordial considering their surroundings.

Her dress was far too tight. Sure, it looked great, but it was riding up in all the places it had no business doing. This party was not nearly as fun or glamorous as she was hoping it would be. No, it was just mediocre, and everyone was pestering her about her work, and when she’d reply with casual responses, they would give up, and slink away. She was exhausted with this song and dance.

At this point, why couldn’t she just go home and get wasted on her own?

But she had to. Had to stay relevant, right? Had to remind the people that she was interesting and legendary and stunning. By her fourth glass of wine, she was starting to feel her body loosen, but her tolerance for nonsense was growing thinner as well. Hence why when she turned at the bar, met with the tall figure of Wren, she rolled her eyes. “Well, this is my fifth, but who’s counting?” She looks over him more closely. Far too dashing to be wasted on an insufferable man. “Not having a good time, mister whitaker?”

now that he’s here, freddie realizes he should’ve told his agent no and stayed home instead. this is his first event after coming back to the states and he’s not going to lie, it feels very overwhelming; he probably should’ve picked something a lot more lowkey for his first public appearance after hiding from the world for a year. the only thing making it somewhat bearable is the fact that his half-sister flew in and came as his plus one—moral support and all. he’s got no idea where she is now but knowing her, she’ll have a great excuse and some ridiculous story to go with it later.

“nia, hey,” he greets the woman as he nearly bumps into her while definitely not trying to run away and find some empty corner to hide in. maybe this is better, hiding is probably a bad idea anyway; he’ll appear more inconspicuous if he’s surrounded by people, right? “how’s your night going? i’m currently trying to decide how early is too early to leave.”

While the urge to leave was strong, Nia knew that that wouldn’t help her image in any way. She was trying to still look young and interesting and fun. If she left now, all the tabloids would have to say is that she’s a tired old woman, past her prime, needing her 10pm bed time. So instead, she would tough it out, even if it was incredibly boring.

She wasn’t alone for very long, however, when someone knocks into her and she’s turning to find Freddie. Charming and dapper as ever. “Hey,” She smiles politely. “What, you’re not charmed by a group of drunk, pestering idiots?” She looks around. “Shocking you don’t find this captivating.”

“okay, did you just see what I saw?” zarah whispered loudly to the person closest to her. “please tell me you did. that bloke over there,” she pointed, “yeah, him, he’s just filled his pockets with that entire tray of h'orderves. i’m not joking, I swear!”

Yesenia looks around, following Zarah’s gesture. “Well good for him.” She says with a shrug, sipping her drink. “At least someone’s taking advantage of the opportunity laid in front of them.” It was probably some party crasher, but Yesenia was far too old to be worrying about who should and shouldn’t be here. They can steal all the tiny treats they want.

       “g’evening  to  you  too,  nia.”  daniel’s  expected  this,  some  inevitable  confrontation.  the  schism  in  the  riley/sayre-sullivan  friend  group.  after  all,  most  of  the  friends  and  acquaintances  he  had  in  hollywood  were  julia’s  confidantes,  first  and  foremost.  it  would  be  enlightening  to  see  who  scattered  in  the  wind  now  that  the  separation  was  a  headline  on  every  gossip  rag.  “and  what  papers  would  that  be,  exactly?”  was  it  the  one  claiming  daniel  had  carried  on  a  torrid  affair  with  a  young  starlet  on  the  set  of  his  last  film?  or  the  one  making  a  mockery  of  julia  sayre-sullivan  discarding  yet  another  husband  and  dumping  him  for  a  younger  man?  the  possibilities  were  endless.  “look,  nia,  i  understand  you  and  julia  have  always  been  close  and  i  get  the  hostility  here…  i  guess,  but  you  don’t  know  everything  that’s  going  on.”

Unfortunately, Daniel has a point. She doesn’t know the full extent of what’s going on. He dear friend has been being rather tight-lipped and not expanding on the details of the separation between her and her husband. But what is apparent is that it’s not good, and has been hurting her feelings. 

“I might not know everything that’s going on but I’ve been here before, and I know showing up with her mother is certainly going to make her life more difficult tomorrow.” Yesenia shrugs casually, sipping her drink. “The hostility comes form a place of care, which you don’t seem to have right now.”

to be oppressed by an obscenely well-dressed crowd, baying for attention without ever saying the words — he must look  pathetic.  the crooked joint of his left thumb jumps periodically. he is itching, no, craving a cigarette. if his specific oral fixation isn’t fed soon, the next studio lackey that gladhands him will feel the pounding soreness splitting past their nose, into the cheekbone then the socket of the eye.

he is wandering past bodies, swerving recognition, rounding a corner where there is more space,  likely a part of the establishment guests don’t frequent. the collision is one of spheres, he imagines, his sphere with hers, it’s a forcefield that stops them in their tracks, his chin bobs in a self-effacing nod.  “  it’s  you. ”   glittery in pink  doesn’t have as much of a ring to it as much as pretty in pink might, another fuckin’ john hughes classic, but he refrains from voicing the thought. she has even less reason to be here than he does.  “  giving security the slip ?    y’know we could switch places, you distract mine, i’ll distract yours.  ”  

This song and dance gets older as time goes on. She goes, because why not, right? At this point, any excuse to get out of the house, get dressed up, get photographed by someone and still stay somewhat in the celebrity zeitgeist, she feels she has to take advantage. But now she’s tired. Everyone here is vapid, or daft, or just ignorant. She’s tired of answering questions, she just wants some fresh air.

Trying to slither away from the crowds, she finds herself running into someone else. Perhaps escape is not as easy as she thought. Then again, when she looks to see who it was, she’s not so concerned with the outcome. “It’s me.” She repeats, running her hands over her front as if she dust herself off from nonexistent debris. “Or we could just walk out with confidence. That’s usually worked for me.”

       julia  couldn’t  believe  that  she  had  almost  forgotten  how  …  condescending  this  goddamn  city  can  be.  somehow  her  self - imposed  exile  had  stoked  opportunity  for  disastrous  rumors,  which  didn’t  exactly  help  matters  of  her  separation  and  freshly  announced  engagement  —   did  she  disappear  to  have  a  love  child?  was  she  quitting  the  industry?  had  she  finally  given   up?  was  she  trying  to  hide  from  ill - fated  cosmetic  surgery  that  had  scarred  her  famous  visage?  the  answer  was,  of  course,  none  of  the  above  and  far  more  nuanced  than  any  of  that,  but  hollywood  doesn’t  enjoy  nuance  or  minutiae  —  that  doesn’t  garner  traffic  to  their  ravenous  tabloids,  does  it?  thankfully,  she’s  always  grateful  for  events  where  she  has  very  little  to  do  and  pretty  things  to  wear.  the  evening  itself  is  a  bore,  though  she  gamely  applauds  for  the  nominees  and  winners;  it’s  the  infamous  afterparty  that’s  really  come  here  for.

of  course,  her  optimism  had  emptied  completely  when  she  caught  sight  of   her  mother  and  her  ex  —  doubly  so  when  it  proved  difficult  to  pin  down  where  jack  had  disappeared  off  to.  she’s  grounded  by  yesenia’s  presence,  quickly  making  a  beeline  for  her,  “schmoozing?  no,  i’m  taking  a  night  away  from  schmoozing,  none  of  that.  i’m  personally  just  trying  to  hold  myself  together.”  her  eyes  dart  around  the  room,  in  search  of  the  nearest  liquor.  “can’t  find  jack,  daniel’s  here  with  my  mother,  and  i’m  pretty  i’m  too  sober  for  all  of  this.  be  honest,  would  i  be  a  coward  if  i  left  the  party  right  now?  in  n  out  sounds  delicious.”

Yesenia has certainly been in Julia’s shoes before. She and her ex had a rather... public and disastrous falling out when their marriage was finally crumbling. She’s done the awards ceremonies that were just excuses to try and hurt the other person. It was clear that the hurt was starting to take its toll on Julia here and now. Yesenia would have to do what she could to be there for her friend in that moment.

She had seen her ex and her mother together--- ouch. But the mention of Jack being nowhere to be seen was... concerning. Yesenia shakes her head. “Well, you can leave, but then they might see that as you losing.” She shrugs, sliding over her drink to her friend, who seemed to need it far more. “I mean, if the politics matter to you at all.” Which to Yesenia during her marriage, it did.

At this point, Yesenia was in need of seeking refuge. There had been so many shaking of hands, so many pleasantries. She was tired of answering question about her children, or her work (more specifically, lack thereof), so she needed an escape, and she took the first person she could find.

Arpine didn’t seem to be talking to anyone so she easily slid in, giving a warm smile. “I swear, each year, this feels more like work than it does a party.” She sighs, sipping her champagne. “How are you? You look great.”

She didn’t actually go to the Academy Awards. Good lord, no. Those things were a bore. However, is had been some time since she’d gone to the party, so fuck it. Even if her dress was starting to constrict, that would not stop her from reminding her peers she was a sight.

Looking over the crowd, even with her heels, she felt she was looking up at so many people. It was hard not to be deep in thought. Even if she was reminding people she wasn’t forgotten, she had nothing of herself to talk about other than her children, and she was tired of that being all she was known for.

A hand landed on her shoulder, and she turns from her though, seeing Julia. She lets a smile peel across her face and she sighs. “Finally. I was wondering when I would get a chance to see you. Have you done all of the schmoozing you’ve needed?”

Her dress is uncomfortable. Her glass of wine is not particularly that good, and the conversation is boring. Yesenia didn’t think she could stay much longer at a place like this.

So while she was contemplating leaving as she was coming back from the bathroom, she laid eyes on a familiar face. The face of a man who was intending to divorce her friend.

Well we can’t let that lie, can we?

Julia hadn’t really been letting Yesenia in to what was going on between her and Daniel, but that never stopped her from inserting herself into things.

Daniel.” She says as she walks up to him. “Funny seeing you make your presence known in a place like this. Guess you don’t care what the papers say about your wife tomorrow.” She’s been here. She knows the sharks come out when a husband and wife arrive separately.

“oh my god, yeah, you’re right. i forfeit, you win,” danny chuckles. a string of incoherent thoughts about getting old and parenting hit him then and for a second, he tries to imagine himself in yesenia’s shoes. this is probably not the time or place to consider—or reconsider—his entire stance on having children, though, so he gives up this train of thought before he gets properly sucked into it. some other time. “how old are the kids? having to ask is probably making me look like a bad friend but in my defense, sometimes i can barely remember how old my own brothers and sisters are.” the fact that there are so many of them doesn’t help either. 

with a sigh, danny reaches for his water glass and holds onto it as he answers, his fingers tapping against the glass. “then i’m glad at least one of us is getting some fun out of this,” he replies, his tone light and teasing. he takes a sip of his water and then puts the glass back, mostly just to delay his answer. he’s not exactly sure if he wants to talk about his work but then he started it. maybe yesenia’s right as well, maybe outsider’s help is exactly what he needs, he’s been avoiding it long enough. “i’m writing another cookbook but so far there’s been barely any writing,” danny explains and immediately feels uncomfortable about having admitted defeat. he’s never been good at doing that. “i don’t know. i’m not exactly sure about which direction i wanna take it and everything i come up with just feels old, overdone and…soulless. i’ve been very low on inspiration lately.”

Bringin a hand up to wave him off, Yesenia chuckles lightly at Danny’s admission that he doesn’t remember her children’s ages. “Don’t worry about it, I struggle to keep track myself. But I’ve got a fifteen and a ten year old. They really get on my nerves but they’re good kids.” She’s tired of the narrative that parenting is easy. It’s not. And yes, at this point, she does daydream about them being adults and her being her own person again. Even if there’s love for them, it has a hard time overriding that as well.

She listens intently as he talks about writing his new cookbook, something she’s never fully be able to wrap her head around. People who write books, in any fashion, blow her mind. She can barely string a few interesting thoughts together. There’s been offers for autobiographies with ghost writers, but she likes the mystery of her life, and she’s not ready to sell out yet, either.

“I commend you for even trying. I know it’s not your first but it’s a feat.” She shrugs. “But hard not to feel like it’s old or overdone when it is, right? I mean there’s a cookbook for everything. Just like every song has already been made, basically.” She shrugs. She might not know books but she knows creation. “I think you and I benefit from our appeal not being our content but ourselves.” Yesenia sips her wine. “Rather than reinventing the cookbook, make it an unforgettable display of yourself.”

There was a TV spot she had to film. Quite the miracle considering she didn’t have anything to promote, but it was useful for some of her philanthropic endeavors. Promoting ways that people can help her community, etc etc. And her publicist said it was good to remind the people, even if just rarely, that she existed. So here she was, entertaining a terrible talk-show just to remind the people what a dazzle she was.

Unfortunately, she was also promoting on the same night as a past co-worker, and thank the higher powers that the show was not going to make that a segment. She did the song and dance, now it was over.

The craft table was a good distraction as Wren finished up his segment. She picked over the fruits as she waited for her next instruction, then looked up when he walked in her direction. “It’s been a while, huh...” She remarks, looking over him. “Are you here to grovel for good publicity?” Not like she was much different.

       in  hollywood,  it’s  remarkably  easy  to  be  caught  up  in  your  own  splendor  —  coming  from  generational  fame,  julia’s  acutely  self  aware  that  she  needs  grounding  presences  around  her  to  avoid  being  swallowed  whole  by  gilded  glamor.  while  the  circumstances  of  meeting  yesenia  didn’t  exactly  yield  the  most  glittering  responses  (  a  laughable  flop  that’s  become  midnight  movie  fodder  ),  julia  considers  it  a  blessing  that  she  walked  away  with  nia’s  companionship  …  and  frankly,  she’s  always  incredibly  grateful  that  her  friend  seems  to  know  when  it’s  time  for  a  much  needed  spa  day.

julia  can  only  respond  with  an  immediate  chuckle,  easing  into  the  water  beside  nia.  “well,  it  wouldn’t  be  my  life  if  there  weren't  a  million  different  fires  to  put  out,  right?”  and  that’s  putting  it  mildly.  “i’m  pretty  certain  the  masseuse  back  there  needs  a  four  hour  break  after  working  out  all  the  tension  in  my  back.”  she  laughs  again,  somewhat  uneasily,  before  her  gaze  swivels  warmly  to  yesenia.  “and  how  have  you  been,  darlin’?  breaking  any  new  hearts  lately?”

The issue is Yesenia is painfully nosy, especially when it comes to her friends, but at the center of it all, she has played her part in the twists and turns of Julia’s complicated life all of a sudden. Still, she’s finding herself curious at the lack of response from her friend, that she considers pursing on. 

“Me? Oh, well the only hearts I’m breaking lately is my kids’. Gotta play the bad guy as per usual. Would like to be getting caught up in some tantalizing drama.” Well, she had slept with Julia’s fiancé some time ago, but it didn’t feel like active drama, so it didn’t count, right?

Suddenly, the older woman decides she might as well press for more about the other’s life. “Did all your divorce paperwork get signed? Or do we need to call in some reinforcements?”

he smiles a bit at her tact, still a wee bit bashful yet nevertheless grateful enough that she made this a level playing field — even if only superficially, but lawrence’d take anything at this point. “well,” he says, “who can say no to being the companion of the night for such a fine lady?” he crosses his legs under the table, makes himself comfortable: body language going all loose and expressive, a bit more carefree; still self-conscious of himself — when is he not, is the real question — but his guard brought low by the presence of a familiar-enough figure near him. “though why the fine lady is all alone seems to be the question of the evening.” he takes the glass she just poured him, tinkles it besides hers for a fine toast. “but — to new friends,” he echoes, smile on his face all genuine, warm; amusement creeping in like the trickling rush of river-water. “though i’m not too sure i’d fall under that sobriquet.”

They weren’t the only two people dining alone that evening, and Yesenia certainly could have picked someone else to sit with, but Lawrence was familiar enough that it wouldn’t be treading new territory, even if it wasn’t her first choice for company. He was sweet enough.

Her head lulls to the side to give a bashful smile. (is it really bashful though? Hard to say if she’s capable of such a thing) “Well this fine lady sometimes just needs to get out of the house. Cabin fever and all that.” She sips the wine, looking back to Lawrence. “I supposed you’re right though, not really that category at all. New beginning perhaps. New something.” Placing her glass back down, she flattens her hands over her thighs. “I could ask the same about a fine gentleman being on his lonesome.”

Feeling grateful was not something Anton internally wanted to linger on, but with Nia, it was a glaringly obvious sensation. Not showing desperation was his specialty, but for years, his connection to her was a lifeline, a thread that allowed him to lean into relevance in a field where being visible was vital. 

Anton gingerly took a dress out. “You list all these problems, darling,” Anton drawls, continuing with being complimentary. What was Nia if not an excellent blank slate? He would never understand those in their world who shied away, and Anton knew there was an anxiety, being an older woman, but he didn’t want to empathise too much. “Your people aren’t fitting you properly if anything is falling out. You should appear somewhere again. Think of it as coming to terms with it with a spotlight. If you can’t imagine it, that’s what people like me are for. ” 

Yesenia isn’t sure what to do. Of course, getting older means a body changing and especially after pumping out a couple kids, she does not look the same. Looking hot, yet sophisticated, it a difficult thing to do. But it hasn’t mattered much, not when she’s been tucked away playing mother since the divorce. Not when she hasn’t done much with her career in years.

“I would like to get back out there.” Something she’s been craving now that her kids are a bit older. She misses creating. Misses being adored. “You truly are so good to me.” She looks back at the dress. “How would you put this together, anyways? Make me look like a goddess.”

“ ⸻ of course i miss him, nia. i’ve known him since i was thirteen. we went to high school together. we graduated, started our businesses, and moved across the country all while being inseparable. everything we did, we did together. we’re talking about twenty-five years of my life.” it’s about his smile and her drink order that he’s perfected by now so that she never has to explain it on her own. it’s about splitting a plate of pasta, just as he likes it, with extra tomato and acorn squash. it’s the little things that get to you. all it takes is one pinprick. “i haven’t. we’re not even legally divorced yet. and he’s well…” still her husband. even if it’s just on paper. 

“i don’t know what i need to focus on. perhaps it ought to be my career, rather than a person. that’s always the safest bet, though atlas will always be my first priority. i still can’t find a way to properly explain it all to him.” she can be vicious and she can be cruel, but as it always goes, there’s an exception to every rule written in the fine print, and her behated other half has found every loophole, circumnavigating every ounce of ferociousness. “come on now, share your tips and tricks. oh by the way, could you fetch us a different bottle of wine? i’m not particularly fond of this brand.” it’s not the wine that poses an issue, it’s the fact that she wants to reach for her phone and dial the only number that she knows by heart. “perhaps something from côte de nuits region?”

Yesenia wants to roll her eyes. She certainly has had her fair share of rendezvous with love but she’s grown a bit my cynical of men. Even if she wants nothing more than to love and be loved--- it’s an amazing feeling, she knows that it’s hardly realistic in the world that they live in. People are far too gone to really have something special. “Well then it sounds like you don’t really want to get divorced.” Granted, Yesenia only had one marriage, and she only ended it when she wanted to skewer her husband. No ambiguity about it.

“But a career distraction is always the best move. You’re the best, creatively speaking, when you’re in turmoil. I think that’s a fact.” She looks over the bottle of wine, then to Arpine, giving her a skeptical look. “If you want something, you can go grab it. You know where the wine is.” If she’s so picky, she’s not going to grab something else just for Arpine to turn it down.
