spent an hour making a tartan pattern guide for a friend, but i figured i'll share it on my platforms in case i can help anybody else too :D
if there's anything unclear, PLEASE feel free to reach out! i love helping!!
because the bottom section is based on krita, other art programs may differ!! try finding equivalents, because i don't understand other programs enough to be able to tell what exactly you'll need to use instead ^^
(please check reblogs for plaintext version! i accidentally reblogged my partner whilst making it but it should still be there all the same <3)

Ok I gotta ask if you're still feeling helpful: how do you **proportion** hands? Because so many times I try my DAMNEST to draw the fingers accurately in position only to realize that oops! I've made them too tiny yet-a-fucking-gain!!!!!! *Maybe* lasso tooling and resizing will fix some of it, but now the wrist doesn't fit so then it's time to start all over again and nagrnjarngjnkgnaningr-
idk if this answers your question but I hope it helps!!

Talking about lineweight! Was doing a very detailed piece and thought it'd be a good time to say what everyone else has said far more eloquently before me! tip me
Anyway, I drew for way too many years without reference, and then I'm like, maybe I'll have a go and SERIOUSLY GUYS PLZ ITS SO MUCH EASIER. Dragons are especially hard to get a reference for without copying somebody's work, so behold: using birds instead.
read my anatomy and pose ramblings before all my techniqus and advice change next week

Made a quick tutorial for how to apply that Frutiger Aero Button texture to living creatures, since I made an entire design with it!

You draw ENA so perfectly! Any pointers of how you capture the shape and structure? I wanna draw her more!
Hiii thank you so much for the compliment and the ask! I’m so happy to answer. I went a bit overboard with how I draw her in particular so I hope that can help in some way!
First thing you gotta know is her upper body is comprised of 3 squares that make the vase looking shape. The middle square is bigger than the two that make the top and bottom face of her polygon. Also note that the big square isn’t in the center of her body trunk, like breasts it is above the stomach area, so when you draw her make sure the middle square is above 1/2 way, I would say about a quarter of the upper body. 🏺 Like how this vase is wider closer to the top rather than middle.
Next thing is realizing her waist/hips are just a rectangle with a couple of extra details. It kinda looks like underwear is how I remember it.
Third, the bottom face of her upper body polygon is smaller than the top of her waist polygon. so her body dips inwards there (in terms of outline/silhouette)
I added some notes about how I stylize her in particular, it will help w making her expressive! However, How you draw her is up to you, i have a particular interpretation her and style I go with, so how I draw ENA in my style will be different than yours, do it how you will! Enjoy!
legs tutorial
a female-centric tutorial for legs <3
we start with bones.
as you can see, the femur juts out, and there's a gap between it and the iliac crest-- this forms what ppl know as "hip dips". some women don't have them.
here's some legs with different fat and muscle contents for comparison
but why are they *shaped* like that? (I hear u ask). well, muscles. muscles can Bulge or Wrap. Think of it as a garter on a thigh-- the thigh bulges, the garter wraps. the thigh then bulges gloriously around it.
here are some simplified representations of the important muscle groups in the leg.
the gracilis/abductor magnus is the "inner thigh". it bulges.
the rectus femoris is a part of the massive bulges we see on muscular legs. it's the middle one
the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis are muscles on the lower inside and outside of your thigh, and are the other bulges you see on muscular legs
the sartorius originates at the hip and wraps around the rectus femoris to terminate at the medial femur (inner knee-ish). it's the garter in this example-- it causes those bulging muscles to squish in the inner thigh.
the anterior tibialis and some other muscles wrap around the shin area.
the gastrocnemius is what we know as the calf. it's the meat of your lower leg, the bulging muscle we all think of when we think "calf"

If I can ask, how do you do color palettes? Your drawings make it look so amazing and nice and I just keep looking at them with my mouth wide open. (Also, sorry if this is a bit too meta)
aw thank you sm and dw that's not too meta, i am in fact willing to admit i'm a real person who is happy to tell you how i make my real art! here's some lil pointers:
1. remember that colours are untrustworthy shapeshifters
colours look different depending on their contexts! bc i use a Lot of pink, i tend to use very desaturated or even grey colours as my blues and greens bc against a lot of warm colours, small bits of grey will look blue/green/colder
so if you want something of the "opposite" colour to blend in, use a more desaturated colour closer to the palette's side of the wheel. if you want something to stand out, use it's 'actual' colour
on this, you can also set what "black" and "white" is within your piece bc again, relativity! in most my half-lined art, i use a dark brown as black and a very light yellow or pink as white, going down to more of a grey if the bg is darker. this way you can make even black and white coherent with your palette!
2. use base colours
this is just a good idea for coherent palettes bc you have a baseline you're basing your colour choices off (said base too many times)! select the shape of your art, fill it with a colour, then when you're actually getting to colouring, start off from that base colour. i don't know how to explain that less badly so here's a picture
alternatively you can be lazy and just do it normally then use a multiply layer on top. but i find it really hard to work like that soo i do this (also you'll learn better this way yada yada)
3. less is more
you wanna know my cheapest n dirtiest trick for having nice colour palettes? just use less colours. re-use colours within the same art as much as you can. like when i draw the last (4) jedi, there's usually only about 11 colours between the four of them
(a nice lil rule of thumb for limited palettes is have 2 similar colours and 1 different colour, bc variety is the spice of life. ie the tl4j palette is yellowy pinks + oranges (both near each other on the colour wheel) and then blues (opposite to orange). rule of three, baby!)
limited colour palettes are also a really good way to practice the colour relativity thing bc they force you to really think about colours and what they can be in the right context. my favourite way to practice limited palettes and relativity is through just using the MS paint default colours to do studies:
(ALSO JUST GENERALLY DO STUDIES OF ANY ARTS OR ARTISTS YOU LIKE PLEASE its a great way to learn any art skill)
5. disregard everything i just said and do whatever you want forever
look i do not have any formal art training and we are on tumblr.com. the only rule of colour palettes and art is have fun and draw your blorbos. there are no other rules -- there are definitely guidelines, and it is worth listening to people who are Really Good/Well Trained, but like. it's art dude. use whatever colours you like and just do whatever floats your stoat
