the situation with harry potter is kind of unprecedented in some ways imo because it is maybe the largest media franchise in history to be created & owned by a single person who still has direct creative control over it. who is also a billionaire with significant cultural/political influence. like the usual "no ethical consumption under capitalism" type excuses shatter on impact when the bigoted author in question is logging onto twitter every day saying explicitly that when you buy the tim hortons ravenclaw donut she is using your donut money to fund the genocide of trans people. like with big franchises usually there's at least a little more diffusion of responsibility than this

theres an assumption that if an alien has an alien gender system they wouldnt understand homophobia but maybe they just have their own more complex version of homophobia. alien society with eight genders and a horribly complex web of what is considered socially acceptable that makes the gender binary look like easy mode. i'm inventing homophobia 2 and it's terrible.

I know it’s not a 1:1 but this is kinda like Europeans with racism. Americans get a lot of shit for being racist, and we are, but Europeans are advanced racist. Not to say there’s no colorism in Europe, but every once in a while I’ll chat with someone from Europe who’ll say something like “I’m not racist like you Americans! I just don’t think the French should be allowed to reproduce, Albanians can’t be trusted to do your taxes, and the Welsh should be killed and harvested for organs.” and it’s like “I’m not sure what that is if it’s not racism, but I can’t deny it’s different.”
