Peter seemed off today.
Everyone could tell, and although the councilmen chose to remain silent, his siblings did not.
“Are you alright?” Lucy asked once a guard closed the door behind the last councilmen, leaving only the Pevensie siblings within the room still.
Peter, who still looked a bit dazed, took a moment before processing her question.
“Huh, oh, yeah. I’m alright.” He answered, stumbling over his words as he brought his hands up onto the table. “Why? Are you not feeling alright? Is somebody hurt?”
Lucy stifled a laugh, Edmund rolled his eyes and Susan, well, Susan only looked at Peter pointedly. It seemed like she wanted to say something, the words just hanging off the tip of her tongue, but nothing came from her mouth.
By the time she did find the words to say, her brother’s dazed expression had returned causing her to hide her smile.
The fellow councilmen who just left may have thought Peter was bored. His expression bordered on the feeling, but his siblings knew him better. There was something on his mind, and Susan knew it would only be a matter of time before Peter began feeling restless.
“I heard there’s an advisor from the Southern kingdom coming, they might want to discuss strategy and an alliance, which I do find a bit odd considering they requested a meeting to negotiate trade routes but Ed, I know you’ve been wanting to gain more allies down South, should we go see if they’ve arrived yet?”. She asked her younger siblings who immediately agreed, barely sparing Peter another glance before they were out the door and down the hall.
“I heard they’re back in their study now.” Was all Susan had told her older brother before joining Ed and Lucy, her smile on full display as she left the room, the sounds of Peter’s chair scratching against the floor as he scrambled to get up growing fainter as she rounded the corner.
Peter quickly followed suit after her, however, instead of turning left with his siblings, he had gone the opposite direction down the hall towards the King’s apartments. He had no care for trade discussions right now, all he cared about was the advisor whixh he had sent to the Eastern Kingdom over two weeks ago who had finally returned.

It’s not rare for Peter to be close to your side. Not out of possessiveness or jealousy however but rather, comfort. Knowing that you’re close by eased his mind and if it meant trailing after you like a lost puppy? Then so be it.
However, Peter seemed to be more clingy than usual today. A bit too clingy.
“Ouch!” Peter yelped quietly when you had taken a step back and accidentally stepped on his foot before resting his hands on your hips.
“Peter,” You sighed.
Resting his chin on your shoulder, he hummed in response as he mindlessly wrapped his arms around your waist securely.
“Is everything alright?”
“Everything’s perfect,” He said, pausing to place a kiss on your shoulder. “Now that you’re home of course.”
At Peter’s reply the pieces seemed to fall into place as you realized why he’s been so much more clingy than usual.
“Is that what this is about? Me not having time to visit you since I’ve returned from the Eastern Islands? I had meetings upon my arrival, my love.”
Travelling to the Eastern Islands was a long, tiresome journey, even with the best steeds in Narnia. A state visit had required one of the Narnian rulers to be present but with all four Pevensie siblings busy with their own affairs, it was a miracle that you were able to attend. The visit would secure the Eastern Islands as allies of Narnia, if it ever came down to war and something you all had been anticipating.
Upon your return from the journey, Peter had just heard the news that your safe return only to barely get a glimpse of you as several of your guards rushed you towards the council room to discuss other matters, he assumed. He had wanted to run after you and join you in the meeting but before he could even take a step in the direction of the room, his own guards had come to tell him about a council that required him and his siblings immediately.
“I missed you.” Peter replied simply, pressing a kiss to your neck.
“I can tell,” You teased, turning around to finally face him only to press a chaste kiss to the corner of his lips. “I missed you too.”
Peter rolled his eyes at the action despite the smile he made no effort to contain. Tilting his head in faux thought, he said, “Did you now? Prove it.”
When you had tilted your up to kiss him, he gave you no time before crashing his lips onto yours himself. A satisfied hum leaves your mouth as he readjusted his hands to hold you close to him, savouring the moment as if it’s been months since you’ve last seen or heard from the other, even if it did feel like it for Peter.
Not that you minded of course.
Not when you were back in the one place you would do anything to stay in forever.
i cannot hold my tongue, you give me much to say (shut up, greyson chance)

Much of Narnia knew of Edmund as King Edmund the Just. The King who is incredibly skilled with a sword while also being a terrifyingly good strategist, making him a force to be reckoned with both in a council room and battlefield. It’s been whispered that despite the High King’s obvious authority, it is Edmund who is typically sent to discuss any matters concerning strategy as well as negotiations and transactions. Not because Peter can’t, but because even Peter knows how scary the Just King can be when it comes to Narnia and its people. Many may bring up his initial betrayal against Narnia, back when he was a boy who didn’t know any better but sought forgiveness upon learning his mistakes. After all, it was Aslan himself who forgave and crowned him King Edmund the Just.
It is also the same King who is now pacing leisurely inside your bed chambers as you shuffled through pieces of parchment on your desk, talking about his recent training session with Peter. Apparently, the High King had decided sparring by the river could be a ‘relaxing’ experience. It took less than 10 minutes before their titles seemed to vanish as they began to wrestle each other like children, attempting to flip the other in the flowing river.
In the end, it was Edmund who landed in the river—although not without managing to pull Peter in with him of course—where the wrestling match seemed to continue before a king's guard was alerted due to the commotion.
“The water was quite refreshing though, it’s been so bloody hot here we ought to go out to the lake one day. Perhaps once that meeting with that ambassador is done.”
You had no idea which meeting he was referring to. There are several ambassadors he will be meeting with later this week and all for different reasons, but you figured he will decide on a day later on, even if the day turns out to be lined with meetings. Knowing Edmund, he’d probably suggest for any scheduled meetings to be moved to a later date and from what you’ve overheard from palace staff regarding his reputation within a council room, there will be little to no issue in having it rescheduled to a later date.
“Are you even listening, love?”
You were not. You were still focused on the piece of parchment in your hand which outlined the logistics of a gathering the Cair Paravel is to host in two weeks time.
“Of course I am, go on!” You lied, eyes not moving from the parchment before you.
“Oh really?” Edmund asked, taking slow steps towards your seat until he was standing at the edge of your desk. “What was I talking about then?”
He was witty— a lesser known fact to many Narnians—and could be so incredibly smug when he wanted to, similarly to how he was acting presently.
Obviously, he knew you did not hear a thing. But he often liked seeing you stumble over your words as you tried to come up with an excuse or such. He found it cute.
“You know, darling, if I’m really that boring you can just-”
Edmund’s mind seemed to short-circuit as the feeling of your lips being pressed gently against his finally registered in his head. Oh.
It was a chaste and short kiss. Innocent in theory, but the mischief twinkling in your eyes as you pulled away told him otherwise. Not that he could care to acknowledge at the moment anyways.
“Sorry, love, you got cut off. What was it you were saying?” You were barely able to get your sentence out before Edmund was pulling you back to him, feverishly pressing his lips back to yours as one hand tested against the small of your back as the other supported your head. Teeth clashed against each other as Edmund seemingly got carried away, nearly bringing you both to the ground making you both stumble and pull away instinctively, both out of breath as you tried to steady your breathing.
Grabbing the edge of the table to steady yourself, you had looked over at Edmund whose gaze immediately fell towards your lips.
“What was it you were saying about the river again?” You asked teasingly.
Edmund glanced up to meet your eyes before closing the distance between you both once more and cupping your face in his hands.
“To hell with the river.” You heard him mutter before pressing his lips onto yours.

“This is ridiculous!”
The sound of the High King slamming his fist on the wooden desk caused his younger siblings to jump in their seats. Susan only looked at him pointedly before speaking.
“Pete, you know this is for the sake of Narnia. Tensions have been growing in the East for years. What if war broke out? It’s best we ally ourselves with them.” Ever the logical one, Peter could only sigh as he cast his eyes down to his lap. “And besides, it was merely a suggestion. Nobody is forcing you into a role you do not want to play.”
A shaky laugh escapes from Peter’s mouth. Edmund and Lucy grew tense at the sound and Susan, whether she heard it or not, doesn’t acknowledge it.
A beat passes before Peter speaks up again. This time, his voice was quieter, softer. Vulnerable. “What kind of king would I be refusing the only option of protecting our people?”
What kind of example would he be leading for his siblings had he refused?
The Eastern Kingdom is located by a small coastal city. Plenty of resources that the Cair Paravel often trade for is sourced from them so an alliance would mean more efficient trade routes as well easier access to the Eastern waters. Besides, it’s been widely known among Narnians that the nations with the most fiercest armies are born from the East.
The Eastern Kingdoms have partaken in little battles, but never lost a single one. Each soldier is put through extensive training, some practices even being considered ‘gruesome’ or ‘cruel’ yet vital for each soldier’s development. Some of the common folk tend to gossip about the use of darker magic to win their battles while others believed that the armies in the East were simply not human. In a land where animals can talk and magic exists, there is little to prove whether any of these claims are true or false.
“When do the council wish to hear my answer?” Peter asked, rubbing the bridge of his nose as the realization of his new reality washed over him.
“As soon as you can come to a decision.”
Peter sighs before flagging down one of his king's guards. “Gather my council men.”
By dawn, Peter’s throbbing head felt as though it could explode. He watched as the last of his council filtered out, a final bow in his direction before his guards shut the door, finally allowing him a moment of peace and for his new reality to wash over him once again.
Just yesterday he was walking through the town square with his youngest sister. Festivities littered the wide walkways as crowds of people filled the streets with a liveliness and joy he could only hope the nation could hold on to forever. A small child had wandered into their path, oblivious to its King and Queen standing before it, and walked right up to Peter. Lucy had jokingly asked when he would finally settle down so that she could “finally be an aunt”. Never would he have expected to discover that his council men had unanimously decided he would be taking a wife in order to secure alliances and settle tensions with the East. And definitely not so suddenly!
But as much as he may think or say, there is one thing for sure, and that is High King Peter would do anything for Narnia and its people. Even if it meant being betrothed to the heir of the Eastern Kingdom to keep tensions at bay.
He keeps reminding himself it’s for the sake of Narnia. Everything he does is always for the wellbeing and sake of Narnia and its people.
Sometimes however, he doesn’t quite believe it.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
News quickly spread across the kingdom of the exciting news.
“High King Peter will be taking a wife!”
“I heard he’s marrying someone from the Eastern Kingdoms.”
“Their armies are filled with beasts! No human is that proficient with a sword.”
“What if his betrothed is also a beast?”
“I wonder if he knows.”
Peter had seemingly mastered the skill of ignoring others' words.
He tried to tell himself he didn’t care about what this meant but the way he bounced his leg as he read through letters at his study said otherwise.
“If you bounce your leg any harder I fear you’ll shoot up into the sky.” Said Edmund, effectively breaking Peter out of his thoughts to throw a crumbled piece of parchment at his head.
“That hurts you know!” Edmund retorted as he got up from his seat to retrieve the parchment.
“That was the point.”
Peter had thought about starting a family once. Back in (their home town) when he laid wide awake in bed. He even thought of his future wedding despite never having dated anyone to even begin with. Despite it all, never would he have expected for this to be the way he would start a family: a complete stranger for a wife and the pressure of two nations expecting an heir in the coming years.
He wished he could back down somehow. Run away, fashion a new identity and live how he pleased. He would be free.
But then what? The task will move to his baby brother Edmund and how would he ever live with that fact. In no way would Peter ever let his siblings take an ounce of the weight on his shoulders, because before he was High King Peter, he was simply Pete. Their older brother, their eldest brother. He was the one who protected them no matter how easily they could get on his nerves. He was born into this role, and even as High King he would fight tooth and nail before he lets his siblings worry about his battles.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
For the next few weeks, Peter was held up in meetings for most of his days. Before the birds outside the Cair Paravel could even sing, Peter would be awake and ushered to his first meeting of the day. Nobody really saw him eat, yet alone leave the meeting room, but trying to reach him would be close to impossible now.
No longer was he banging at Edmund’s door bright and early to join him for a morning training session. He used to hate it, even threatening harm to his eldest brother while simultaneously getting ready for said training. Despite his brother's time being spent elsewhere now, Edmund still finds himself getting up at the same time, but instead of waking up to the sound of his brother's insistent knocking he’s met with a deafening silence.
When he opens the door to head to training, he just barely catches a glimpse of his brother as he rushes towards the council room. Oftentimes his shirt is barely buttoned or his hair is still a mess as he enters the room, stomach empty and starving but he doesn’t have time to eat. He has to discuss allyships and new trade routes, as well as divergence of power across nations when he takes his betrothed. Not to mention the stress of ensuring that any possibilities of war and tensions are accounted and planned for in the worst case scenario.
When noon rolls around and his guards give him a small meal in between meetings is when Peter begins to miss the platter of fruits Lucy tends to bring to his room in the mornings after his training with Edmund is done. Guilt gnaws at his chest whenever he’s able to return to his chambers in the dead of night only to see the fruit now brown.
On nights where he doesn’t return to his chambers, he spends it wandering the castle. The castle was often quiet by the time he was done with all his meetings for the day. Dimly lit corridors and hallways lined with candlelight guided him towards the library where he often sat on a worn armchair by a window in the far corner of the room. It was easy to miss, allowing inhabitants to momentarily ‘disappear’ as Peter would call it, and he loved it.
Some nights he would pass by Susan in the library on a lounge chair with a book in her lap. Candlelight lit up her small space, providing just enough light to not strain her eyes reading but also just enough as to not disturb anyone else who may find themselves in the library at that hour.
Neither of them would say anything, briefly acknowledging the other with a look before returning to the pages on their laps. More often than not, Peter wakes up the next morning still in the armchair with a blanket wrapped loosely around his shoulders and a bookmark in his book, placed closed on the nearby table.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
It’s been awhile since the Cair Paravel has been this lively. Everywhere he looked, maids rushed in and out of corridors, knights ushering guests and fellow royals throughout the castle, and even Peter’s own siblings could be seen in the crowds running around trying to ensure that tonight runs smoothly.
“Perhaps a walk through the courtyard can help take your mind off things.” Well, almost all of his siblings.
Edmund had spent most of the morning a few feet at most away from Peter. Perhaps he feared he’d run off and lock himself in his chambers until the Eastern Heir ultimately decided to leave, or perhaps he just knew his brother would need at least one of his siblings present and with his sisters worrying about the social aspect of tonight's affairs, that left Edmund to be responsible for his eldest brother.
Mindless conversation spewed between the two brothers. And by that, it meant Edmund telling his brother anything and everything that popped into his mind in efforts to keep Peter’s mind far from the dinner that is happening in less than 6 hours from now.
“I’ve been training with that new Commander recently. Commander Richard I believe was his name. He’s not bad, but I don’t understand how he expects me to tell Phillip to dash through the enemy crowd in case of battle. Phillip barely listens to me when I take him on rides.”
As they reached the meadows, the once serene and quiet air of the castle grounds was filled with the clang of steel against steel. Curiously, the brothers followed the sound, until they eventually found the source of the noise.
Two soldiers, far too engrossed in their sparring to even notice the two kings watching them closely, were absolutely mesmerizing to watch. Their technique seemed simple, yet calculated and insanely detailed all at the same time. Peter felt as though he was watching two masters. For all he knows, he might actually be.
One soldier, taller and larger than his opponent had curly brown locks which stuck to his forehead with sweat. He was struggling against his opponent, but even then his technique wasn’t anything neither brothers had seen before. The other soldier was smaller to the first in comparison, with her hair pulled loosely into a braid running down her back.
Despite her slight disadvantage, her sparring did not reflect it. Even every miniscule move her opponent did was efficiently deflected or blocked. It felt as though she had eyes everywhere, allowing her to find their blind spots with a level of terrifying ease and precision.
These were not one of the Cair Paravel’s soldiers. He could tell from the cerulean fabric that rested around their shoulders, if not for their style of fighting. These were soldiers from the Eastern Kingdoms.
Peter had a tendency to tear his capes while in combat, finding the material too flimsy and often getting in his way. These soldiers however, seemed to move with such grace that their capes simply trailed along behind them almost as if to accentuate their moves. The brothers stood there, silently starstruck as the session went on until the loud clatter of steel broke them out of their trance. The reflective metal caught their eyes as one of the soldier's swords fell just before Peter’s feet.
“High King Peter, King Edmund” Both Eastern soldiers greeted. The soldier who was disarmed, the one with short curly hair, fell to a kneel while the girl pointed their blade to the ground before following the actions of her partner.
Peter could barely find the words to say, far too enamoured by the way they had sparred. And perhaps something else, or rather, someone else. But he would never say it aloud. He was meeting his betrothed tonight, the least he could grant her his loyalty. Shaking those thoughts out of his mind, he had tried to find the right words to say.
By the time Peter could even grasp at the words to say, the sound of horses and his king's guard quickly grabbed his attention.
“Your majesties,” One of the guards greeted, looking towards the two Narnian kings as well as the soldier carrying her sword. Peter seemed to pay no mind to this action as the guard turned to face Peter. “I apologize for the intrusion, but your council requests your presence as well as your highness’ brother right this moment.”
“Very well then, we will get going then.” Peter nodded, picking up the fallen sword to return to the soldier. “It was a pleasure meeting the two of you.”
“Thank you, your highness.” The soldier responded, sheathing his sword onto his hip as he bowed.
“I’ll see you tonight, my lord.” Said the other soldier. Her braid falling to her side, stray strands of hair covering her face as she bowed her head. Peter fought the sudden urge to brush it away. Instead, he stood straighter and greeted both soldiers goodbye once more before hastily making his way back to the castle. Edmund trailed after him closely.
“What was that?” His brother asked teasingly.
“Nothing, now hurry on. They need us.”
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
It seemed as though the entirety of Narnia was present in the ballroom tonight. Everywhere he looked, people dressed in glamorous outfits with gold and shimmering gemstones reflecting off his eyes. Servants offered small snacks and refreshments to guests who happily engaged in conversation with each other.
Standing off to the side, Peter was surrounded by two of his siblings as well as a friend from a neighbouring kingdom. Lucy was most likely standing somewhere with a few of her own friends. He had remained quiet, allowing the other three to entertain themselves as his mind wandered off to other pressing thoughts.
What if his betrothed hates him?
Would he be a good husband?
What if the two of them have nothing in common?
The reality of this night had seemed to fully settle in as he watched the royal herald approach the bottom of the grand staircase. The loud music and chatter quickly easing to soft murmurs amongst the guests as all eyes turned to face the herald who could barely contain himself with glee. It appeared Peter was the only one who wasn’t as exciteful as the other guests here tonight. Glancing up to where the double doors at the top of the staircase remained shut, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes as he heard the announcement that has been haunting his mind for the past few weeks be spoken aloud.
“On behalf of the Kings and Queens of Narnia, I would like to thank everyone who has shown up today for their support of High King Peter’s betrothal to the heir of the Eastern Kingdom. Tonight, we properly welcome the Eastern Kingdom to Narnia as an ally and partner, and with that, may I present to you, the Princess of the Eastern Kingdom.”
Peter refused to open his eyes. Or maybe he simply couldn’t. Despite this however, he could still feel everyone's eyes on him and it almost felt hot on his skin.
After what felt like a millennia of darkness, he had finally opened his eyes. As his vision adjusted to the brightness of the ballroom, the face of his betrothed slowly came to clarity as she approached him carefully.
A soft gasp had left his lips when his eyes finally focused on his betrothed but despite the shock wishing to keep his feet planted on the ground, his body seemed to have a mind of its own as he instinctively outstretched his hand in offering, allowing his betrothed to take it so that he lead them out to the middle of the room.
“It would be wrong for the first dance of the night to not be the High King and Queen of Narnia themselves.” One of his councilmen had told him during one of his meetings.
Despite his initial hesitance, his conscience seemed to agree with the councilmen in the current moment as he led his betrothed out to the centre of the room, the music returning in a soft waltz piece he could barely recall from one of the balls hosted some time ago.
Everyone watched silently as Narnia’s High King and Queen fell into a synchronized dance, eyes never once leaving the other despite the million pairs that were on them.
“You seem shaken, your majesty.” Said his betrothed. Soft confusion was etched across her face, yet her moves never once faltered, and neither did his.
“It’s you.” He spoke softly, almost as if he was scared his voice would be heard through the music and murmurs of guests around them.
“Was I not what you were expecting?”
A breathy laugh escaped from his lips at the question. “Much the opposite, actually.”
Peter watched as his betrothed furrowed their brows slightly. His heart seemed to swell at the action.“Is that so?”
Slowly, more and more couples filled the dance floor, moving in perfect sync to the music. Peter could not care to focus on the others however, not when each and every move between them seemed to be made for each other. The way his hand fit perfectly in hers as well as her waist. The fabric of her dress accentuated their movements as he guided her around the ballroom, reminding him of the way her cape would flow when she sparred. She was truly mesmerizing.
“You’re staring, your highness.”
Peter let out a chuckle. “How could I not?”
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
Some time later.
“Do you seriously still believe you can best me?”
“I’m confident.” He had responded, his smile making his eyes crinkle up in the way she often voiced admiration for.
“Perhaps a bit too confident, no?” She questioned, taking slow steps around him with her arm casually outstretched, sword aimed directly at his chest as she kept her eyes focused. Meanwhile, Peter held onto his firmly as he watched his wife circle him slowly.
He laughed, pretending to look off to the side as if he were thinking. “We’ll see about that.”
And with that, he had made the first move and lunged forward with his sword, hoping to catch her by surprise and disarm her.
The sound of steel against steel rang through his ears. Her sword blocked his blow, and in the next second, had flipped her sword and effectively disarmed him. Going for the next hit, Peter was able to block it thanks to his armoured arm but his pride was short lived as in the next moment, he had landed on his back with the sword aimed at his neck.
“You are awfully cheery for someone who is in the most vulnerable position right now.” She remarked, chest heaving as you both tried to take in as much air as possible.
“Maybe I’m just exactly where I want to be.” Was his response, causing her to roll her eyes. Peter couldn’t contain his smirk as he contemplated taking advantage of her openness as she dropped her sword to the ground beside him. Instead, Peter looked up at his wife with sparkling eyes, admiring her at this angle before opening his mouth again.
“I think we tied, no?”
“Whatever helps you sleep at night, my lord.” She responded teasingly before offering a hand to help him up. He took it, allowing her to help pull him up and when he was back on his two feet, he wasted no time in closing the distance between them and pressing his lips onto hers.
She laughed at his haste, the sound getting cut off every so often as he chased after her lips every time her giggles forced her away. It was an endless cycle Peter would never break.
Except for maybe when one—or all—of his siblings decide to intrude on his training session.
“Remind me again, what were you two training for again?” Edmund quipped, holding in his laughter at the speed at which the couple pulled away from each other.
Peter rolled his eyes as he wrapped an arm around her waist to bring her closer towards him. The scent of warm musk and earth filled her senses. As the Pevensie siblings took turns teasing their eldest brother, she had closed her eyes and allowed herself to hide her face in Peter’s chest. .
“I don’t remember my sparring lessons ever going like this.” Lucy said with a giggle.
“I think this is a different sort of training, Lu.”
And with Susan’s remark, Peter decided he had enough.
“Don’t you all have other pressing matters to attend to than standing here judging our training session?” He said with all the fake seriousness he could muster. His attempt was however futile due to the curve of a smile he couldn’t seem to hide as he pressed a kiss to the top of his wife’s head.
His siblings shared a look between each other, then at Peter and their sister-in-law, then each other again.
“What?” Peter asked, sensing that something was going on.
“Nothing! Continue on with your training, your majesties.” Edmund teased, a dramatic bow following his words which his sisters happily copied.
Oh they were never going to let Peter live this down. They’ll tease him forever! But the sound of her soft laughter at the siblings' antics caught his attention and Peter suddenly no longer cared for the endless teasing he’d have to endure. Not when this is what he has for the rest of his life.

"It took you long enough." Regulus said with a huff, hand still midair about to knock before you had swung the door open, which leads you to the situation you were now thrust into: your ex-boyfriend standing in your doorway with bags of groceries and takeout in hand.
"Regulus I'm really-" He barely lets you speak before easily letting himself in, setting the bags onto your countertops as he began preparing whatever it was he had bought. "Not in the mood right now..."
Seeing as he's already throwing ingredients into one of your pots, there would be no use in even trying to get him to leave so you shut the door behind you and decided to take a seat at the island, watching as he worked. However, the moment you even took a step forward he was setting down the knife and urging you to go to bed.
"You need to rest, I don't care how much sleep you say you got, you need more. Go. I'll leave some tea by your nightstand." Was all he said before guiding you back to your room and closing the door, barely letting you face him before the door closed, leaving you with too many thoughts when all your body wanted was to curl back into bed. And given that Regulus was seemingly going to be making dinner, there was really no reason to not listen to him.
When you woke up again, who knows how many hours later, you found a cup of tea by your nightstand as promised, steam coming off the top of it as you took a sip. It briefly brought a small smile to your face before you remembered who exactly it was that put it there.
You felt much better as you got out of bed, taking a moment to stretch before walking towards the hallway where Regulus' voice was slightly muffled due to the soft music he had left on in the background. It was a song you had once loved and played whenever Regulus came over for dinner after work. It's been a while since he's last entered your home as your boyfriend, but he seems content to live in ignorance bliss whenever he comes over-oftentimes unannounced and/or invited —and the song just so happens to appear in the queue.
Your current relationship with Regulus was complicated. The two of you had broken up nearly five months ago, putting an end to a three year relationship that was going seemingly well. One would've thought such a sudden break would cause a rift between you two (it was what you were hoping for anyways) but it appears that Regulus doesn't seem to care. You're certain he's doing it out of spite, but another part of you hopes that there's more to his actions than simply 'spite". It wasn't easy choosing to end such a perfect relationship after all, much less your choice.
As you entered the kitchen, you were met with Regulus' back as he hunched over your countertop, focused on cutting the tomatoes just right even though he knows you hate them (he says it helps with the flavour and you agree, but that doesn't stop you from hating them). You watch as he finishes prepping the food, moving effortlessly around your kitchen to find the exact items he needs. Everything is still where they were when you kicked him out five months ago, and he knows you well enough that that'll never change.
"The salt's on the table."
Except for the salt and pepper, since you were too lazy to put it back after using them last night.
"Good Morning sunshine." He joked, enjoying the way your eyes rolled at the stupid nickname as you stepped towards him.
"Whatcha making?"
"Stew. It just needs to simmer a bit more so that the vegetables cook. Do you want to freshen up while I finish up here?"
You give him a nod, your body stiffening when the normalcy between you makes you forget that you're no longer dating and you catch yourself almost leaning forward to rest your chin on his shoulder. Too embarrassed to even look up at him, you quickly ran off to your bathroom before he could say another word.
By the time you were back, Regulus was just done setting up the dinner table. A part of you hated how you left his spot vacant even after all that's happened. You were in a new city starting anew, you didn’t need a second sea at your dinner table. However, the other part seemed to enjoy how naturally Regulus filled that spot, both the seat across from yours at the table and your home in general. Despite your numerous attempts of trying to push him out of your life he has simply refused and made it apparent he was staying in your life one way or another. Whether that be as your lover or a friend, he was there to stay.
"Dinners ready!" He hummed, catching your attention as he nodded towards your seat.
He was going to turn in the direction opposite of the table but upon noticing your silence, understood and added, "I'll join you in a sec, just going to put these dishes in the sink."
That seemed to be all you needed to hear as you took your seat at the small dinner table, waiting patiently as Regulus allowed the dishes to soak before wiping down the countertops then joining you at the table.
The meal, aside from simple requests of can you pass me some napkins and where's the salt, was silent. Music that you are now certain is playing from the playlist you made after he had moved into the apartment was still playing in the background and brought forth a wave of nostalgia you didn't think you'd get. The normalcy of it all was frustrating however, and you didn't mean to slam your spoon onto the table but he didn't even appear to be fazed by your sudden outburst. It was about time this happened.
"Why do you keep doing this?" You asked, watching as he simply continues to finish his stew, refusing to look you in the eyes for once.
"Doing what?"
"This!" You gestured around you exaggeratedly. "Visiting me still, cooking for me, keeping me company. We broke up already, Regulus."
"I know." Came his response.
"So why do you keep showing up?" There was no malice to your question. No venom coated words or sharp tongue, only pure curiosity seeing as you've raked your mind for months wondering why he wasn't leaving you alone despite all your efforts.
For a moment, Regulus remained quiet. He didn't look up at you nor did he say a word, slowly finishing his stew and wiping his mouth before setting the plate aside to finally look at you.
"Why are you so persistent we distance ourselves?"
You almost scoffed at his question. For one, you two were now no longer dating, so why continue to see each-other as often as you did whilst dating. Secondly, neither of you will be able to properly heal and move on if the very person you've chosen to leave is still in your everyday life. And thirdly… his mother.
Walburga Black is the wife of a wealthy man in London. Wealthy enough that she was able to fund your entire move to Scotland where she had hoped would be far enough for Regulus to leave you alone and also powerful enough that she was able to even achieve that wish in the first place. The relocating part at least it seems. She had given you a generous job offering for a company she had connections to. It paid better than your job back home and allowed you some extra cash so that you wouldn’t be living paycheck to paycheck. All she asked of you was to ‘leave Regulus alone’.
Obviously you had refused at first, but with a status like hers and the connections she had, it would not be worth going against her. A week after her initial offer, you had agreed to her deal with a sullen mood as she transferred an additional cheque to your account for ‘being so understanding’. You bit your tongue and simply thanked her before being escorted out of her office and to the car waiting outside. Regulus was currently on a trip to New York, so by the time he landed your cell would be deactivated and your apartment would be bare, leaving behind no traces of you or your relationship for him to hold.
“This will be better for him.” Walburga had told you. “If there’s no traces of you ever being there, it’ll be easier for him to move on. We don’t need him clinging onto the past now do we?”
You had agreed, because what else were you to do?
Even you had assumed Regulus would stay in London. He had everything there, why throw it all away? But it appears that both you and his mother underestimated his dedication–although it is what continues to confuse you every time you see his face.
"Why did you come all the way here?" Your voice was so soft he almost had to strain to hear you. "You had everything back home, why did you abandon it all just to come here? Don’t you miss your old lifestyle?"
The way he was looking at you made you feel like the answer was blatantly obvious. His brows were furrowed as he tilted his head sideways, appearing to be carefully choosing his next words before sitting up on his chair, letting his elbows rest on the table as the next song started to play from the speaker.
"I had everything back in London because I had you. What good is anything back there if you're suddenly on a train heading north?"
There it was, the confirmation you had both been dreading and waiting to hear since you stepped foot into your new apartment.
"But your mother-"
"Bought us a nice apartment to live in, I know. Such a sweet parting gift don't you think?"
You could almost laugh, had it not been for how hard your heart was pounding at the confirmation you had been waiting to hear for so long. Ironic how despite practicing how you would react when the time came you were now rendered frozen as you tried to come to terms with the fact that it finally happened.
"Regulus," You started but he cut you off by calling your name and for the first time in five months, he looked just like your Reg. He looked at you as if it hasn't been the most excruciating five months for you both, with such a tender and sweet expression you could almost melt.
You had expected the worst. Had practiced your defences for when the fight would occur but it never had the chance to bloom. Instead of getting upset, Regulus simply placed your hands in his, a thumb smoothing over the tops of your knuckles before speaking.
"Perhaps I did have everything," He began. "But I don't know why you subconsciously view me as the kind to even care if I inherit the company or not. They could give it all to the intern for all I care and I'd let them. They can take my name off their will, take back my cards and properties too and it wouldn’t even matter to me."
He saw you open your mouth to speak and cut you off before a sound could even pass your lips.
"I love you." He reminded you for the first time in five months. "I love you, even if it means I am no longer an heir to a multimillion company and my family hates me. Truly I don't care for them if the answer has always been you."
It was almost deafening how hard your heart was pounding, threatening to burst out of your chest any second now if you didn't calm down but how could you possibly do that? How could you even think to calm down when he’s just confessed his love for you at the expense of everything he’s ever known and had.
Regulus did not say anything further, instead letting you take it all in as he hummed softly along to music while his thumb continued to run over the ridges of your knuckles.
After a moment, he brought your hands towards his face and pressed a kiss to it before clasping his other hand around your own. "I thought I was pretty forward to everyone about my affections towards you, was I not clear enough?" He mumbled quietly.
He was. Upon his first time meeting you, there was a visible shift in his attitude which all of his friends had quickly noticed. He'd decline offers of going out in favour for a quiet dinner at his penthouse with you, cancel on clubbing because you wanted to explore the waterfront when you couldn't sleep at night, he even took up pottery classes since you worked at a studio nearby his apartment and it would mean Regulus could be in your presence for longer, even if he would be bailing on a flight to Paris that his friends had invited him to.
(He thought they would get the hint that he no longer cared for partying but instead began inviting you to come along as well after he introduced you to them.
Regulus had quickly shut them down, though that didn't stop Mary from giving you her number so that you could make plans later.)
All to say that not once since you met him, did Regulus make it unknown or unclear that he was utterly in-love with you. So why did you doubt him when his mother sent you away?
His mother was the simple answer. But as he encouraged you to elaborate, Walburga turned out to only play a fraction of that fear. It was the thought of ripping him from the lifestyle he knew and was accustomed to, from the title and norms he's been raised to adhere to. Sure Walburga was also terrifying, but more so was the thought that Regulus would be throwing away all he ever knew just because of a little crush.
Business meetings since he was a child, attending galas dressed to the nines with a flock of eligible girls hanging off his arm, fancy dinner parties in different cities every night–if not the most exclusive in the city for when he decides to stay home–was nowhere close to your everyday life. In all honesty, your paths were probably never meant to cross but somehow managed to intertwine at just the right moment, for the love of your life to be here with you now. Now you understand however, that despite the differences in your upbringing and previous lifestyle, this is what he now wants–a simple, easy lifestyle with his lover by his side.
"I'm sorry." You apologized with a sigh, finally feeling the defeat of the act you've put up since Walburga got into your head about "tarnishing his image".
"Why are you apologizing, love?" A hand came up to hold your cheek, while the other drew comforting circles on top of your own.
"For listening to your mother?" You offered with a short laugh although it didn't quite reach your eyes. It never did whenever his mother was the topic. He couldn't blame you, but that was now in the past.
"Forget her, we'll be alright now."
taglist, lmk if you want to be added/removed! @retvenkos @with-love-anu @screennamealreadyused @princekooks @jackys-stuff-blog
to begin, a thousand apologies for getting to this so late when i asked to be tagged in it 😭😭😭 the notification got buried in my activity, but i saw it in my email and came running. this is my little walk of shame, reviewing it so late.
moving forward, however,,,,,,
one thing i love about this fic is how quickly it jumps into the action. i'm as disoriented as the reader is rattled when the fic begins, and i think the quickness of jumping into the story and the slower reveal of What Transpired Between The Characters is a great way of setting up the moment and the awkwardness gently giving way to understanding, remorse, and hereto hidden affection. amazing, wonderful; no notes - i love how the very essence of fic writing can lead to such great convention, on occasion.
i also really love regulus in this fic, whose actions and motivations mystified me at the beginning, but gave way to such a softness and tenderness that was endearing. and the stew <333 you know cooking for people is my love language, and i'm literally eating stew right now (taro and squash let's gooooo) so how fitting is that <33.
lmaoo no worries it happens 😭 thank you for reading <3
this was me trying to get back into writing and i just could not start it like, normally? just chose a moment and ran with it and i’d say it worked out alright lol. i forgot how hard writing can be i do not miss it (the struggle not writing)
my favourite thing is making reg so inlove in my fics. is he still a bit mysterious? yes. is it coming from a good place however? also yes
If I could go back in time, rather than roughly but warmly, would I be able to let you go?

“Have you finally got your head out of your arse?” Draco asked as he took the seat across from Pansy. Quickly, she began to miss the quietness that filled the room prior to his presence.
“Such a kind friend you are. I’m doing well, thank you.” Pansy rolled her eyes as she picked up her teacup, gesturing to the second one reserved for Draco before taking a sip of her tea.
For a brief moment, silence filled the room as the two simply enjoyed their tea and snacks. From where they sat in the drawing room, the sound of running water from the b fountain in the garden outside helped fill the silence before one of them was ready to speak. Unsurprisingly, it was Draco.
“Have you told her yet?”
Pansy wished she could play dumb. Told who what? But there was a reason she had invited Draco over today, and both of them knew it was not because she missed her best-friend.
“Or have you finally realized it for yourself?”
At that, she slowly nodded her head, her gaze casting downwards as Draco leaned back in his chair. “Do you plan on telling her anytime soon?”
She scoffed in response to this. “And then what?”
“What do you mean ‘and then what?’. And then you can finally have your—painfully obvious—answer that’s what!” Pansy had opened her mouth to say something but Draco continued. “Don’t you even try to deny it, all of us can see it. I don’t understand how you’re doubting yourself even after so many of us have told you it’s not just you.”
He was right, unfortunately. All of her friends have told her in one way or another to just go for it. They all claim to see the spark but all Pansy seems to see is the aftermath of everything that could possibly go wrong. His words hung in the air for a while before she finally spoke again.
“I’m scared it won’t work out.” She finally admitted, eyes landing on her lap as she picked at her fingernails. “And if it's not because I mess it up then it’ll be because of my family. Draco you know how they are, remember how they reacted to Longbottom? And he’s a pureblood! How do you think they’d react to a muggleborn? I don’t want her to be dragged into this whole mess.”
The reason why Pansy was always seen as reckless growing up was due to the knowledge that everything she ever had was always replaceable. She never had to worry about damaging or losing anything because she could always simply get it back one way or another. This however, would not be replaceable if something went wrong.
“Don’t you think she also knows what could happen?” Draco tried to reason. When she simply remained quiet, he continued. “ Pans, it’s been a year since your friendship with them changed whether you choose to acknowledge it or not. I think she knows what she’s getting herself into and is just being the off chance everything is fine. Don’t you also want this to work out?”
Pansy scoffed, lifting her head up to look at him. “Of course I bloody do, what kind of question is that!”
Love was something she had pushed to the deepest edges of her mind but now appears to have flooded every inch of it, turning her into, per Draco’s own words one drunken night, a “tolerable person” which had earned him a shove at his shoulder.
“Then why don’t you try?”
“I’m not risking her!” Pansy exclaimed, suddenly jumping onto her feet causing a plate of scones to go flying across the room. “I can’t risk losing it all, not if there’s a chance it won’t work out.”
Draco looked at his best-friend with a softened expression, watching her struggle to calm her breathing as she stood hunched over her chair, fingers tightly gripping the back of it as she tried to calm her racing mind and heart.
In that moment, Pansy wonders if this was all even worth it. Physical objects her parents could care less about, but the future of their family name was a different story. They tolerated her mischievousness growing up but with her graduation in 2 years, her parents had become more firm on their expectations of her and unfortunately, her little songbird is not a part of them. Not in the way she would’ve liked that is.
“But what if it does?” Draco was now suddenly standing on the other side of the chair, the feeling of his hand covering the tops of her seemed to pull her out of her head to finally realize he had moved. “It could work out for all you know, you won’t know unless you try.”
He was right. What if it doesn’t mess up? What if she’s just overthinking everything? What if it would work out?
But would that be a risk she was willing to take?
