I’ma be so real I might be the only Deltarune player who thought Ralsei and Flowery were both an enemies-to-lovers tsundere-type thing and a doomed yaoi.

the online identity and gimmick-ifying of autism is so odd. I'm diagnosed with autism and yet I barely identify with any stuff I see about it anymore. It feels like autism is being rebranded as the Silly Guy Disorder that gives you smart and beautiful hyperspecific interests. it's not that I mind silly jokes or being lighthearted about being autistic- but when the entire social movement is based around marketing us this way, I just can't help but feel isolated from it. it feels like I'm not the right kind of autistic. I'm not marketable and digestible to common audiences, and therefore I am discarded by the movement in the name of progress and acceptance. it feels foul.

It just occurred to me why it’s so much easier for me to read on Tumblr than many other places.

Aside from the non-serifed font and decent word/line spacing, I caught myself scrolling down to the point that the line I was reading was at the very top, the line above it hidden.

I have been subconsciously using the scroll function as a reading aid.

Fun fact about me is that I'm stupid.

When I was a child (maybe six years old?) I asked my parents what thoughts were, and they told me "they're the pictures in your head". I agreed like this explained things, but unknown to all of us, I have aphantasia, and since I never had pictures in my head I secretly concluded that I was incapable of thought. The way people talked about thinking made it sound really important, so I went for literal years carefully guarding this secret and when people told me to think about what I was doing etc. I'd stay quiet and pretend I was capable of thinking. I didn't want anyone to find out I couldn't think.

When I was about eight, my mother's horse ate sand and got colic and she was up all night with him. The next day, I was told that he went to live on a nice farm.

I was in my thirties before I thought back to the situation and realised that Zamada had died.

I was literally too stupid to punish as a child. I have a lot of very clear memories of being sent to sit in a corner or told to stay in a class at recess and my opinion of the situation was 'I guess this is my role in whatever the current school activity is'. It wasn't until I was in high school that I realised that I'd spent so much time in reception and year 1 in time out or detention. Did not even register that that was happening at the time.

I used to have a very strong fear of snakes and when I was a little kid I was, for some reason, under the impression that the snakes had some kind of secret conspiracy where they wanted to kill me. We had frequent power outages (I'm unsure if it was the area's infrastructure or if my parents just couldn't keep up with the electricity bills) and every time the power went out at night I'd jump up on a chair or table or something and refuse to come down until I had light, because I believed that snakes had bitten through the power cables and were swarming across the floor in the dark ready to bite me while I couldn't see them.

I thought that Jesus was just a guy who obtained magical powers by being born on Christmas Day and decided to use his powers to help people. Like a superhero. I didn't know anything about superheroes at the time so when I later learned about Superman and Batman and stuff I was like "oh, like Jesus Christ!"

My great grandmother was also born on Christmas day and I could never understand why she either didn't have magic powers, or did but kept lying to me about it.

Derin have you seen Hannah Gadsby's comedy special Douglas? It's incredibly funny but there's specifically a bit about being an autistic child in school that you might enjoy.

For a while as a child I thought you had to cut a baby out of a mother’s womb because my sister and I were c-section babies.

There was a stretch of time where I thought I was secretly a fairy because my friends said I had pointed ears like one. I still don’t know if they were also convinced or just playing pretend.

I am not scared of spiders or snakes, but I am scared of ants.

One of my first memories is of my dad taking me onto the roof of our old house to watch the Blue Angels. After that I would get super excited whenever I saw any plane, thinking we’d go up on the roof.

I lost my first tooth at four years old, and it freaked my mom out so she took me to the dentist thinking I broke it. I thought I had to go to the dentist every time I lost a tooth. Also the amount of teeth I’ve lost lost (like couldn’t find them) is extensive. I even got a letter from the “tooth fairy” once, scolding me for letting a tooth fall down the drain of my bathroom sink. I still have it.

Also my dad recalls the look of fear on my face when at my first dentist appointment, the dentist told me that I could get “little bugs” in my teeth (bacteria). I don’t think that one is my fault tho like wtf????

I have a complicated relationship with “AI.”

I am greatly opposed to the current development trajectory and the environmental harm that is disregarded in favor of “progress.” Even Microsoft, who have been tracking their environmental impact and share their data publicly, who have been using a lot of their revenue to build renewable energy infrastructure around the country, and who have plans to reach net zero carbon emissions, are outpaced by the power and water consumption of their own AI. The other large companies are not as open about environmental damage and make minimal to no effort to show any concerns about their practices and the consequences that come from them.

There are also the issues of plagiarism, copyright infringement, taking away from actually talented people. There’s the concern that people are forgetting how to think for themselves because ChatGPT can do it for them. There’s the issues of “hallucinations,” where LLMs just make things up. For brevity, I won’t go into as much detail about these, but the list of concerns grows.

And yet, I study Supply Chain and Operations Management. The field is changing before my eyes, and my peers and I are encouraged to learn how to use AI so we are prepared for the changing environment. I have been using LLMs for the first time, and I am rather good at it. I try to avoid using LLMs when I can, but I have been more open to using them than I have in the past because I know I will likely have to use them in the workplace.

I had an assignment in one of my courses introducing students to prompting LLMs, and before I worked on the assignment, I had a “conversation” with Microsoft Copilot. I had it estimate its own environmental impact, and it was very open about the fact that it is undermining its own company’s goals to be carbon neutral. I struggle to not personify it as being somewhat guilty of its own existence, even though I know it’s just programmed to say what fits my prompts best. I finally told it in full honesty that I am hesitant to use LLMs because of the environmental impact they lead to. And it told me that I’m not “anti-AI,” I’m “pro-Earth.” It gave the sentiment that those two things shouldn’t have to be one and the same, but the companies at the forefront are making it difficult to separate the two. And I’m inclined to agree. I’m not mad at Copilot for being created, I’m mad at the billionaires who chose to rush the process and hurt the planet we live on.

I still will use LLMs as little as possible, and I will still avoid image and video generation models altogether. But I don’t want to feel guilty for living in a world where it’s harder to avoid because of the actions of billionaires thousands of miles away.

I don’t think this post has a very strong thesis, it’s just a collection of related thoughts of mine. Do with it what you will.

I met a man on the bus this morning, called himself “Po Boy.”

Po Boy was not a pleasant man to talk to. He kept tapping my shoulder and trying to ask me out on a date to Taco Bell, then the public library. Insisted I put his number in my phone.

But he was also very incoherent; something was up with him, though I couldn’t tell if it was drugs or a disability. Either way, I kept talking to him because I had a feeling he was lonely, the type to be dismissed and ignored by the world.

I probably won’t talk to Po Boy again, I’ll probably delete his number from my phone. But I hope he gets home safe and has people there who care about him and want to help him.
