I got accepted to do a PhD in plant sciences at Cambridge last week, and I wanna share what it's about but I'm afraid it might fuck you up a little too much?
serious response: this is fucking wild because the more i learn about biology the more ive been finding myself looking at living things as machines/computers, especially with molecular stuff, and it fucks me up but doesn’t surprise me that this is something that could be possible, especially considering recent advances in what we know about plant cognition and reasoning. when you think about it, ‘if ____, then ____’ systems are already inherent in plants, if not in more complexity then a plasmid (see: the relationship between abscisic acid and gibberellin in arabadopsis germination, where the decides when it’s warm enough to germinate by translating the temperature into corresponding chemicals in the seed and waiting for the amount of one chemical to pass a certain barrier; it really does operate like a weird fucked up little computer. ‘if it is warm (gibberellin exceeds x point), then start germination processes’.)
