Masaomi looked down at his daughter with a gentle smile. “Of course you can, dear. If we work together, everything should be spotless by the time your father gets home. How about I wash the dishes and you dry them and put them away for me, hm?”
With a nod, and a small jump, Kiseki readily agreed to help her mother with his house chores. She’d finished playing for the moment, and wanted to spend any time she could with Masaomi, regardless of what it was. Plus she liked helping out whenever she could.
“Okay!” she sang happily and skipped into the kitchen first.
“Momma, can I help clean too?”

Shizuo looked away. She probably did hear it a lot. But it was for her own good for the most part. Right? Plus if he told her anything then he’d recieve a lot of back lash from both her parents, and Shizuo didn’t want to start anything he couldn’t control his emotions over. Taking a deep breath, he could only give Kiseki an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry. You must get tired of it.”
Ah, he wasn’t quite prepared for that question, and looking back that was pretty dumb to bring up. Luckily she shrugged it off, but he didn’t like that she’d have that annoying flea to teach her how to run away from his battles. Then again there’s no reason she should learn how to start them either. Shizuo knew some pretty dangerous moves, and those were the kinds he couldn’t teach.
Wasn’t there a dojo Akane was going to to learn how to fight? Maybe he should take her there.
“Ah, I didn’t mean to insinuate that Masaomi should do all the cooking..” Besides, he’d never heard the flea making his own food to begin with. He’d always known for the flea, back during their Raijin Academy days, to only accept gifts and food from girls who did it on their own. That and the flea was a terrible cook. “I just thought your dad couldn’t cook was all.” He told her deciding to leave out the latter detail.
“As expected. I think your dad should do more than just provide a house for you guys and take up chores as well. Maybe he’s spoiled.” Ah yes, he knew that the flea bastard was spoiled rotten. If he spoiled Kiseki any more, which she probably didn’t acknowledge, to his knowledge of children, that she was.
Taking a scoop of pudding he looked down at it and swallowed. True, having only pudding didn’t make for a good snack. Setting it aside he went to the refrigerator again to take out a bottle of milk. Milk was healthy right? He felt like he’d been mildly scolded by the little girl.
“Ah thanks for reminding me. Milk should do right?”
Kiseki shrugged. “I’m used to it by now. Adults keep lots of secrets from me.” She certainly was used to being shooed away from some situations, or saw how her parents stopped speaking when she walked into the room. It was something that was frustrating, but she didn’t get too upset by it. She would simply have to wait until she had grown up enough to know about adult things.
“No, Papa is a better cook than Mama—but don’t tell him I said that. He makes good food, but Papa knows how to make more complicated things. Mama reads cookbooks to get better, though.”
Kiseki shook her head fervently and furrowed her brows, looking at Shizuo with a serious expression. “Papa isn’t spoiled. He works hard to make money for us! If not for him, we wouldn’t be able to live in our nice home or have food and clothes.”
She resumed eating, only briefly lifting her gaze from the food to watch Shizuo get up. When he mentioned having milk as something healthy to eat, she laughed quietly. “Milk is a drink, silly. You should have whatever you want, though. I’m not the boss of you.”
“Ahh well….” Shizuo couldn’t explain that, to her. He didn’t believe he’d be the one to say something like such to a little kid. He had to laugh at her act though. “Well, because if I tried to explain it to you, you wouldn’t understand it at the moment. I know you’re smart, after all you take after the fle- ah, your dad when it comes to that.” However she had her mother’s emotional temperament, and those both combined was pretty dangerous at the moment. He couldn’t say that though. “Trust me, it’ll be a lot simpler as you get older. Not now though. And though you’re smarter than most people your age, you don’t have the wisdom to know what to do with whatever is told.”
He hummed slightly and shook his head. “Well the thing is Kiseki, I can’t teach you how to fight.” He rubbed his neck in an attempt to explain how this would work. “You can only learn how to fight when you feel like you’re in danger. If you’re getting bullied, then you would teach yourself how to fight in that moment. Otherwise, it’s useless for me to teach you how to fight.”
In the kitchen, having heard what she said about her mother’s cooking the blond allowed another smile to cross his lips. “If your mom isn’t good with complicated meals does your dad get upset? I think Masaomi should make whatever is good for the whole family, and to make sure you’re eating right.” Opening the pudding, he nodded.
“Yea I like sweets.” He laughed to himself. Izaya is a piss baby anyways, he didn’t doubt the flea hated sweets. “What about you?”
Kiseki pouted. She hated when she was treated like, well, the age she was. She was an intelligent girl often praised by her teachers as being at the top of the class. That didn’t mean she wasn’t still a young kid who had a lot to learn about the world, though. She didn’t understand many “adult” situations and concepts. “Yeah, I’ve heard that before...” Kiseki decided not to further the conversation, both because she had nothing else to say and because she was getting hungry.
“If I have to teach myself, then why did you offer to teach my if I was being bullied?” She tilted her head in confusion, then shook her head. “Never mind, it’s not important. Maybe Papa will teach me someday when I’m older.”
The girl furrowed her brows. “How come Mama should do all the cooking? He always says that Papa needs to help out too, or it won’t be fair. Mama gives Papa the silent treatment when he’s mad, so Papa doesn’t get upset about those things. And the cooking isn’t that bad—just some things.”
Kiseki nodded as she began eating. “I like sweets sometimes, but I get a tummy ache if I eat too much at one time. I don’t usually eat enough for that to happen, though.” She looked at Shizuo’s pudding again. “Is that all you’re having for lunch? You should have something healthy with it.”
The yellow sky will soon rise

At least there was some peace in the house, he thought to himself. He had to wonder who she got mad at often though. But like he thought, she was a good mannered child, and getting angry was something normal after all, especially when kids thought that their parents were being unfair. “Well, of course they would. After all parents do things and get made at their children for a reason. You’ll understand some day.” He smiled lightly at her.
He was glad she wasn’t getting into any trouble at school as well. He wouldn’t really teach her much, maybe just to say ‘I’ll get my uncle Shizuo on you.’ or something like that. Little girls her age really shouldn’t be fighting or acting in turns of violence anyways, if they could help it, he thought. He gave her a pat on the head.
“Sorry, but if you were, I’d teach you something otherwise.”
“Let’s eat a snack together then huh?” He suggested. getting up and extending a hand to her to help her up and into the kitchen. Looking into the fridge he pulled it out and handed it to her and got out a cup of pudding for himself.
“Do you know what snack you have in there?”
Kiseki groaned at Shizuo’s words. “Why do grownups always say that? It’s so frustrating.” She crossed her arms over her chest and sighed dramatically. “I want to understand things already, so I won’t be confused by ‘adult’ things. Everyone says I’m smarter than kids my age, so I should just be treated like an adult now.”
The girl had decided to simply drop the topic about learning how to fight—until she had a realization. “Uncle Shizuo, don’t you think I should learn those things before I get bullied? What if it happens someday and I’m not prepared for it?” She really was sharp, and dangerously so, just like her intelligent father.
Kiseki grabbed his hand and stood up, following him to the kitchen. “No, but hopefully it will be good. Mama isn’t the best cook with complicated things—don’t tell him I said that, though.” She took a seat at the table and unpacked her lunch, smiling when she found a simple sandwich, strawberries, and a piece of candy. “Do you like sweets, Uncle Shizuo? Mama does, but Papa doesn’t.”
ᗷɑɓyѕittiɳg
It was subtle, but Shizuo felt his whole mood brightened when the young girl thanked her. Going back to coloring, he though about how she was a good kid honestly, despite the things both her parents were involved in. She was a lot like Akane, in a sense she gave off a sense of purity and innocence, but he could never know. She was also intelligent for her age, so sometimes Shizuo had to be careful about what he said and what she could catch onto.
“Well In a way it does. It’s not physically fighting… Should you really be stomping at your parents?” Shizuo tilted his head somewhat. She didn’t get in trouble for that? “Afraid not. Your mom and dad will be mad at me if I taught you how to fight, especially with them. But if you were getting bullied at school that would be different.”
“Hey, did your mom pack you a snack or something in your lunch pack? You feeling hungry?”
“They get mad at me for it when I do, so maybe not... I don’t do it all that much, though. Only when I’m really angry, and that doesn’t happen very much.” Kiseki was generally a well-behaved child, and didn’t often act out, both towards her parents and in school. She followed most rules and felt guilty if she broke them, being honest and owning up to lies eventually.
“Bullied...?” She had been told about it by her parents and teachers, and occasionally saw it between her classmates, but it was rarely directed at her. While she could lie and say she was getting beaten up, her developing conscience told her it was the wrong thing to do. “I guess not.” Kiseki pouted a bit, but nodded when Shizuo asked her if she was hungry.
“Yes, I am kind of hungry. I have enough food for lunch now and a snack later if Mama and Papa take longer than they said.”
ᗷɑɓyѕittiɳg
“I don’t see why not.“ Shizuo muttered, though he saw no need in such trivial matters, nor to really make a big deal of it. If Kiseki was happy that’s all there really was to it. He was truthful though; he thought she was both cute and beautiful.
Seeing the frown on her face he looked away somewhat. He felt the need to apologize. He knew that her parents didn’t like exposing her to dangers and violence, so perhaps talking about how he use to get hurt was a bad thing.
He smiled a little and nodded. “Lots of people do fight when they’re angry. For once your Papa is right. I can throw heavy objects that normally shouldn’t be thrown by humans like it’s nothing.” He rubbed his neck. “I don’t really like doing it unless its needed to.”
Kiseki smiled brightly. “Thank you. I’m happy,” she replied simply, glad to be complimented. Being both cute and beautiful at the same time was certainly ideal for her. As a twelve year old, she wasn’t confident about her sense of self, and was unsure of how her looks affected how people perceived her. Well, other than that she got more attention than children that were considered unattractive.
“Sometimes I stomp my foot or slam my bedroom door when I’m angry at Mama or Papa. Does that count as fighting? I also yell sometimes if I’m really mad, but I don’t hit people. Could you teach me how to fight, so I can be strong like Mama and Papa? I’ll surprise them by being able to fight them!”
ᗷɑɓyѕittiɳg
Shizuo felt the corner of his mouth twitch, with the question being asked so suddenly. He took a moment to ponder how to answer this. What type of beautiful did she really mean? Then again there was a fine line between beautiful and sexy at least. He hummed and tilted his head slightly.
“What do you mean by that? I mean, you are beautiful, we’ve been saying that since you were tiny.” With his hands Shizuo judged around what size she was and smiled a little. “But you’re also cute. Don’t underestimate compliments given to you by people who love you.”
Shizuo laughed halfheartedly. What reason would she have to pick up those strange habits exhibited by her father? well..it was probably a good thing she wasn’t going to work for the Awakusu-kai.
He began coloring his page; he found a truck driving on the street he could shade in. “I guess you can say that.” Fights to equate to dangerous games right? “But I was alright. My bones just weren’t strong enough to play those dangerous games.”
Kiseki wrinkled her nose. “So I can be both at the same time?” She considered the concept for a few moments, then smiled, accepting it. “Okay, thank you!” It was definitely better to be cute and beautiful than just one or the other.
She frowned again at the mention of his past injuries. Kiseki didn’t like seeing people physically injured, and her parents often sheltered her, like most parents, from seeing those types of things. Of course, she watched the occasional action show, but she had only seen real life violence a few times.
“Mama says that you fight people when you’re angry, and Papa said you’re so strong that you can pick up a whole vending machine and throw it like a baseball!” Kiseki’s expression of concern turned into one of excitement, already forgetting about Shizuo’s childhood fights. “Can you really do something like that?”
