Seongji sighed, his hands raised in surrender. The hunter who had been in pursuit of him stood in front of him, hunting rifle locked onto the werewolf. His daughter had gone missing on the day Seongji was spotted at the border of their village. For what reason was he near their town? Well, Sujin fell sick and there was no medicine to treat her fever.
…He could try to take down the hunter, but he didn't want to test which was faster—him, or the hunter’s finger on the trigger. There was no guarantee that a silver bullet wasn't loaded in the chamber.
“You liar! Damn werewolf, we let you into our town and this is how you repay us?!” The hunter was beyond reasoning now. His finger tightened on the trigger as he glared at Seongji with bloodshot eyes, the rifle aimed directly at him. Seongji only has one shot. At the very least, he should make the hunter aim for somewhere non-vital. The hunter, further enraged by Seongji’s silence, takes a shot at his leg. The werewolf flinched in pain, biting down onto his lower lip to muffle his groans. “Not even saying anything, are you?! You must’ve killed poor Iseul and ate her up… Pops was right, your kind should’ve never lived—” Seongji heard the sound of the hunter cocking his shotgun once more. He closed his eyes in anticipation. The bullet just had to be silver too, didn’t it? Had he been shot anywhere else, he could’ve dodged and- bah. It was no use thinking about what ifs.
Maybe God is finally putting an end to him after extending his grace for far, far too long—if there even is one.
But the shot never came—Seongji opened his eyes, only to witness the hunter collapsing onto the grass, hunting rifle knocked out of his hands. His eyes move from the unconscious hunter’s body up to the culprit. He was first greeted by a brilliant flash of red, followed by tanned skin and a pair of curious eyes. “Ooh, a werewolf…” The cloaked man rested his shotgun against his shoulder, his other hand gripping a dead deer’s head by its antlers. The scent of blood is strong on him. His cloak billowed gently in the soft breeze, the hue so crimson it looked as though it was soaked in the blood of his hunt.
Seongji tensed, preparing to fight till his last breath should he be proven hostile. The man eyed Seongji with curious eyes before giving him a soft smile. “Hello there, Mr. Wolf. It looks like you needed some help.” He leaned down, extending a bloodied hand towards the wolf, the head of the deer abandoned on the grass, staining the earth beneath it a dark scarlet.
Seongji studied the man intently. Somehow, he felt that if he took this human’s hand, his fate would forever change. For better or for worse, he could not tell.
He hesitated for just a moment, before taking the human's hand, staining his own a deep crimson.
