Hidden Costs of Climate Change Running Hundreds of Billions a Year - National Geographic
The sad truth is, you canât control the actions of your peers, coworkers, and fellow citizens, so you need to figure out how to keep yourself from losing all hope. So I did what so many Americans have reluctantly dragged themselves to do, and talked to a therapist. (A few of them, actually.) Hereâs what I gleaned: Confront the end of your own life, and then figure out one thing you can do to channel your anxiety effectively.
"But this is not a âwhere thereâs smoke thereâs fireâ situation. We donât need to know much more to know that the president has committed conduct that was once thought sufficient to warrant removal from office."
Most have taken a cautious approach in the wake of James Comeyâs firing.
The president has now decisively crippled the F.B.I.âs ability to carry out an investigation of him and his associates.
This is a tense and uncertain time in the nationâs history. The president of the United States, who is no more above the law than any other citizen, has now decisively crippled the F.B.I.âs ability to carry out an investigation of him and his associates. There is no guarantee that Mr. Comeyâs replacement, who will be chosen by Mr. Trump, will continue that investigation; in fact, there are already hints to the contrary.
Historians of the United States call the FBI directorâs firing an extraordinary momentâbut not entirely unprecedented.
President Trump signed an executive order Friday that aims to expand offshore drilling for oil and gas, in a move welcomed by the oil and gas industry and greeted with alarm by environmental groups.
Science has often proved futile in the climate change debates. But even if the science is faultyâmight you still be best off believing in climate change?
âHillary Clinton was at her best and most uplifting when she spoke about American interests in world affairs and how they relate to our understanding of democracy. But when it came to life at home, she tended on the campaign trail to lose that large vision and slip into the rhetoric of diversity, calling out explicitly to African-American, Latino, L.G.B.T. and women voters at every stop. This was a strategic mistake. If you are going to mention groups in America, you had better mention all of them. If you donât, those left out will notice and feel excluded. Which, as the data show, was exactly what happened with the white working class and those with strong religious convictions. Fully two-thirds of white voters without college degrees voted for Donald Trump, as did over 80 percent of white evangelicals.â
"The other thing about coal is that unlike retail and other industries, coal is highly concentrated in certain regions. When coal mines shut down, towns go under. National media sends reporters and TV crews to those towns, and the resulting coverage can make coal's impact on national employment levels feel much larger than it actually is."
"But good intentions do not always produce helpful consequences. In this case, the Billy Graham Rule risks reducing women to sexual temptations, objects, things to be avoided. It perpetuates an old boysâ club mentality, excluding women from important work and career conversations simply by virtue of their sex."
As the calculus on whether it pays to stay silent or speak up rapidly shifts, American companies have emerged as a force for social change
Iâve worked as a professional performer in the UK since the age of 12 â and my Arab heritage has pitted me against some pretty awful racial profiling in the industry. My first film job at the age of 14 â Steven Spielbergâs Munich â featured me as an Islamic terroristâs son. Needless to say, that was an explosive introduction into showbusiness.
âI pray that La La Land doesnât clean up at the Oscars (as at the BAFTAs). For this would be a sign that the industry prioritizes the celebration of itself first of all, self-indulgently rejoicing in its own nostalgic - and white â mythology.â
Megaprojects are rarely, if ever, completed on schedule.
Around 100 workers were reportedly fired for participating in last weekâs strike. Whether thatâs legal remains to be seen.
Running a family business isn't the same as running a public corporation.
