TUTORIAL on HOW TO USE THE I CHING when you don’t know anything about it :
Step 1 : Learning how to draw your very first hexagram
How to consult the I Ching with the use of 3 little coins
You will need...first TO learn how to make your very first hexagram. A means of making your first hexagram is to use three little coins - the change in your pocket will do fine, use not the too heavy coins, nor the too light ones, medium weight coins will do.) them MUST BE three identical coins.
Once you got them, YOU MUST DECIDE which SIDE is HEAD and which SIDE is TAIL, (the face of the famous celebrity on a coin usualy is HEAD) ... Give a number value to each side, it goes like this, each head has number value THREE ; each tail has number value TWO.
NOW, put them in your left hand if you are right handed, and the opposite if you are left handed, it must always be the less crafted hand that hold them.
Then find a QUESTION, and now, while THINKING to your QUESTION, throw the three coins together LIKE YOU WOULD THROW DICE.
Add up the result of the 3 coins sides laying still on the table - either way it will be always number value 6, 7, 8 or 9.
For example, 1 head = 3, plus another head = 3 too, plus a tail = 2, it gives you the 3 number value of each coin a total number value of 8.
You can use the following table to translate this number into the drawing of your first line of your first hexagram (NOTE : draw down the line you received on a bit of paper, this first line of your hexagram will be placed at the bottom of your paper. Hexagrams are like plants: they receive light from the sky and grow from the ground up.)
or simpler
(the lines marked are the CHANGING LINES) :
Repeat the same process of throwing your 3 coins together five more times (thinking of your question at the same time) , drawing your lines on paper after each throw from the bottom up to the sixth and last line toward the top of your bit of paper. (the trick is to thing about your question at each one of the 6 throw)
Now you've drawn down your VERY first hexagram, Easy was not it ???
.
Now, look up THE NUMBER of your hexagram (drawn) in the 64 HEXAGRAMS GRID (see foto below) of the I CHING BOOK and that will give you the answer to your question : there's no more casting to be done. Go and flip the pages In your I Ching book (whichever one you're using, the RICHARD WILHELM I CHING, translation by Cary F BAYNES is the good basis for starting) there should be THE HEXAGRAM NUMBER you just found through the criss crossing (CONCORDING) of the upper and lower trigrams together in the HEXAGRAMS GRID here :
Thats about it for now, practice this often when you have questions and you'll master the first step in consulting the I CHING, then when this done, you'll be able to learn second step of the CHANGING LINES, in the tuttorial here below TO COME SOON
