I wish I could favorite things a hundred times but instead I will do it once and then reblog it while crying.
The top five happiest animals I saw at the Berlin Zoological Garden today:
5 and 4: these brown bears having a water fight as they drift down a lazy river
3: this pygmy hippopotamus having a nap in the sun
2: this tiger sacked out on a warm sunny rock, upraised foot occasionally kicking a little
1: This panda, being gently misted while laying in a specially made hammock surrounded by a heap of bamboo snacks
Trolling my biologist D&D player by sending the party on a quest to prevent the destruction of a mystical seal, and when they finally get there it quickly becomes clear that I'm actually describing a walrus.
I'm annoyed that this would work on me
Let's make a catbird
Grey catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) are one of my many faves. Let's make a catbird.
jaunty angles
burbling away loudly but invisibly within a dense bush
emerging to peer at you from a branch

NOTHING will prepare u for how tiny this guy is
Me watching the prep: That’s gonna be WAY too small for him to live in!
Me seeing the amphibian: Objection withdrawn.
This has been my entire bloody summer so far
Highly recommend that everyone puts out a bug bath if only for the joy that comes with bugs starting to recognize you as a source of water.
Basically just put a bunch of rocks in a container (a shallow bird bath, a metal standing tray, a tupperware container, etc), fill it with as much water as you can while leaving the rocks partially exposed (so that there is dry surface for bugs to land on or climb onto if they get stuck), and keep it clean and refreshed with clean and cool water especially on hot days.
I use one of these filled with a mixture of rocks and glass pebbles for a very cheap bug bath that the birds also enjoy AND I put a chair next to it for the squirrels to get drinks (which they do!) You'll find a bunch by googling "metal table tray" and they're surprisingly sturdy once filled with water and if you push the legs into the ground a bit.
I also use a large but fairly shallow ceramic serving bowl as a ground bath, with less rocks, which is mainly enjoyed by frogs, toads, wasps, and whatever critters take drinks from it as they walk through my yard. I've seen beetles take breaks to swim around in it and today, as I was refilling, a wasp was hovering nearby and took a drink as soon as it was full. It left and then a ton more wasps came to get drinks.
And I have this one (not my photo) on my deck for the birds but they've never used it (not enough cover, I think) but the little frogs are removable and hollow and mine are FILLED with earwigs?? And the bees that enjoy my deck plants really enjoy the bath's water.

#Helios was declawed by his former owners so he doesn't just slap things he dislikes like most cats#he really only feels confident in hissing at them#Especially because a lot of the thing he doesn't like are bugs and those are sharp sometimes :(#Selene has figured this out and now when she hears him hiss she sprints over the kill the fuck out of the bug#Helios has learned she will do this so he'll hiss at stuff louder and louder until she hears him#A nervous old man and his emotional support homicidal maniac tags by @gallusrostromegalus
