INTRODUCING KEARABILWE ‘KEA’ REFILWE MODISE-MOLOTO
We would like to thank our guest speaker Kea fro sharing her wonderful story with us.
Kearabilwe ‘Kea’ Refilwe Modise-Moloto is the the Founder and Director of Bontlebame NPO, is always trying to inspire others and to make their lives better by adding value.
I was inspired to do what I do based on my desire to inspire people to recognize just how wonderful they are. Beauty is innate in all of us so Bontlebame aims to ignite that beauty towards people to live their best lives, discover their gifts and talents, and commit to enjoying them.
My dream job, as a kid, was to become a magazine editor and a business owner because I love sharing all things beautiful, exciting, inspiring, and empowering.
I define success as follows: the ability to be true to myself and those around me, to be happy and content with my life, and completely love myself. I also think that giving and sharing what I can and having a loving and stable family is important in terms of success. Most importantly, having the confidence to realize my dreams results in my success.
If I could go back in time, professionally-speaking, I would not change a single step, as every effort and experience has brought me to this point; a point I am content with so no regrets. I learnt later in my life, however, that hard work begins in your early school years if you want to have a successful career life, and I am able to achieve and realise this through Bontlebame NPO.
The best decision I have ever made was to put me first in all life changing decisions and I cannot think of my worst decision. I take the necessary time, consideration, and meditation needed before I make serious decisions. I search and listen to that small, quiet voice within me and sometimes it takes time to hear it, so I wait.
My best ‘switch off’ strategy is stupid TV shows, a feel good movie or a nice book. A spa day can never disappoint.
The leadership qualities I most admire are leaders that build and inspire others.
On a daily basis, I get inspired and empowered by the women that wake up at the break of dawn to walk to the train station to get to work in order to pay for their children’s food, schooling and clothing. The Mamas that sell vegetables at the street corner – dedicated to their business even when the profit margins are minimal. The single mothers that sacrifice a great deal and overcome difficulties, challenges and fears on their own to bring up stable, responsible, and productive adults. Maya Angelo represents and embodies all the above and more…Winnie Mandela represents the strength and will power that we all have as women, Graca Machel is the powerful, humble, intelligent, compassionate and strong woman we should all take example from.
My life’s motto is live, love, and share authentically!
I think the most significant barrier to female leadership is women. We are, most of the time, our own barriers to female leadership; we view other women as competition instead of embracing them for their strengths and capabilities. We allow unnecessary and unfounded insecurities to distract us from the goal post. We fail to accept the roles we play as beautiful parts of being who we are.
The biggest challenge for the generation of women behind me will be living up to and beyond the achievements of the women before them: the women of 1956 who changed reality for all South Africans and the women who took over and showed our capabilities to take over and run the show. We now have Women leading countries and multinational organizations. The question is: how will they surpass that? More than the above mentioned, the next generation’s biggest challenge will be correcting the wrongs that have resulted in the big gap between the poor and the rich, issues of socioeconomic challenges and moral decay that seem to be becoming entrenched in our systems, society and culture.
My top three tips for women in business are to see and welcome other women as part of the necessary components for women emancipation and success in all spheres as well as business. You cannot be successful as a woman when you do not have compassion, and the ability to uplift, empower, and take others along with you.
Speak and make your point when necessary, take a seat at the ‘table’ – create that seat if it seems that all the seats are taken. We cannot blame our male counterparts for not giving us the opportunities; we must go for the opportunities and create them if necessary. We have to make ourselves needed and relevant. Women need to see other women in their different fields, or same field, as partners and not competitors or threats to each individual’s success. It is imperative for women to acknowledge that we all have our own journey to success, the other woman’s success cannot stop or lessen your opportunities to succeed. We each have a star that is ours, so help others to reach their star while you journey towards yours.
You do not always have to follow the rules, sometimes it is necessary to follow your heart. Listen to the small quiet voice inside you and you will be led towards success. There is a reason that you are unique and don’t forget that our intuition is naturally good for us and the world!
My personal message to the world is to find the authentic you. Find JOY, live your JOY, and yes, be kind. Mentorship is important to me because it is necessary. Just like the body needs healthy food and the gym, mentorship gives direction and nurtures towards success.
I believe that supporting and giving back to the community is important because it is our responsibility to help those that have less than us. We must remember that it is because of favorable circumstances and by the grace of God that are able to enjoy the lives we have. So when we give to the less fortunate we alter their circumstances and create and encourage a better tomorrow – therefore changing lives positively.
AS AN AMBASSADOR FOR YOUR COUNTRY
If you were to visit my city, I would personally recommend that you visit the Apartheid Museum, a township/informal settlement, and rural villages. You also must visit a real farm – it is the essence of who we are.
