I love having self insert characters tbh, it lets me romanticize myself in a way I'm bad at doing without that buffer of them being a fictional character.

Time to ramble about gay autistic shit.

Today I’m thinking about Salvio being autistic and learning to repress a lot of the traits people found irritating. He’s still weird but in ways he doesn’t see as annoying; he’s blunt but he doesn’t say anything quirky, he keeps the interests but absolutely no infodumping, resting bitch face is fine but he forces himself to fake eye contact, would absolutely never stim but the leg bounce is okay, etc.

Then he meets Guzma and Guzma is just Out There (I’d HC him more as ADD than autistic for the record). Guzma goes off on tangents about bugs whether anyone gives a shit or not, he’s extremely blunt, he has absolutely no fear of looking stupid and even seems to embrace it, he wears sunglasses indoors and calls himself “destruction in human form” and people just accept it because he’s weird and it’s cool that he’s weird. 

Likewise Guzma meets Salvio and thinks he’s bizarre. Here’s this guy who focuses as much about prehistoric pokemon as he himself does on bugs. A guy who, like himself, got fucked by society and is finding a way to fight back. He seems like a total asshole but he’s actually really kind even though he’s got a personality like sand paper, all rough tone and dry wit. And the guy is smart, like weirdly smart about some things, like book smart but he’s not a dick about it.

I really love the idea of them together because I think they’d both soften each other’s edges a bit. Guzma could learn to be a bit kinder without assuming it makes him soft, and learn that it’s okay to show you’re smart about some things; it doesn’t immediately make you a stuffy asshole. Salvio could learn to let go a little and not worry about looking dumb or being annoying, being weird is fine and not just in ways people approve of.

cringe culture is dead so self-insert/self-shipping shouldn't be shamed anyway, but i do think a lot more people would enjoy it if they approached it a lil differently. like it doesnt have to be "just some ordinary person dating a character outside of the plot for fun" (though that is cool too). like u can go hog wild with it

this post is about inserting yourself specifically into a story BUT i also have a word to all the writers out there who make x-readers and reader-inserts. you are not going to make the MC relatable to everyone. there is no way to make them relatable to every single reader. so at least try to make them interesting on their own. give them some quirks and traits of their own. i believe in you.
