what digital space are you planning to focus on? Youtube/instagram/twitter/website/etc. and WHY???? we want to know the why!

To start off, the digital space I'm planning to focus on is Instagram. I chose it because I don't spend a whole lot of time paying attention to my Instagram and the content that I follow on there (to be honest, I'm more of a TikTok girl). Secondly, the reason I didn't on TikTok compared to Instagram. Thirdly, I wanted to get a little bit more familiar with Instagram since like I said earlier I don't really use Instagram a whole lot; because outside of occasionally posting on it like maybe once or twice a month, sometimes sending reels to my friends, and occasionally liking two or three post I'm not really on it.

I also chose to do Instagram. I think having to use it for the data analysis practice was helpful in learning how to pull data from the app (I use Instagram all the time).

How are you narrowing your account choices?

I started with one creator I already followed and really liked, then searched for others in the same space who had a similar audience and post style. I looked for creators who post consistently, use a mix of content types (like reels, carousels, and photos), and engage with their audience through captions and stories. I also made sure they focus on romance or fantasy books, since I wanted a clear theme for my analysis. I tried to choose creators that had some overlap but different approaches to how they present their content, so I could compare strategy and style.

Starting from a creator you know and then going somewhere similar is a great way to find content you're interested in but not connected to.

Week 3 OG post 3

I chose the community simply by scrolling past it on Instagram. I see a lot of beauty creators on my Instagram explore page but its not something I love or consider a special interest. This made it easy to explore because I was familiar with the community but not immersed in the community. I have seen the creators I used prior to this project but didn't follow any of them.

I learned how to make data look and sound interesting. It can be hard to turn a bunch of numbers into something people want to read. The data analysis practice project taught me that adding graphs and visual make data interesting and easy to digest.

I chose to work on Instagram for my content analysis. I chose this platform because it is one I use everyday and I am comfortable with the interface. It is easy to find necessary data as well.

Trends I Noticed When Collecting Data

When I was looking at the levels of engagement on instagram, I noticed that the posts getting the most engagement in the last 4 months have been the bookstore crawl event posts, congratulatory posts for Made in Millersville participants, and other posts showing students and various other events. I think these posts resonate more with people because naming specific people or showing pictures of the events alongside text captions make them more personal to people who either attended themselves or who know someone that did.

This was also super interesting to me as well. I learned so much about the community of the ENWL department from this post alone. In my opinion, it was a lot of engagement for a university sponsored account.

Catching Up

I got a bit behind, but I’m back and dedicating the long weekend to catching up! To stay on track, I’m breaking the project into small daily goals, and I will draft and revise my reflection a little each day so I’m not overwhelmed.

Also, I’m trying to put some effort into aesthetics, so if you see a late post, please don’t scroll past it! It’s fashionably late but still doing its job :)

What worked for my data collect was going through each individual post on my phone and then using my laptop to record. Saving the pictures of Instagram posts on my laptop did not work. It would not save as a jpeg and would only save as a web file.

What is content?

To me, content is about sharing ideas, connecting with people, and expressing myself. It can be educational, emotional, random, or just fun. It’s a way to build community, explore your interests, or reflect on special or hard moments in your life. Sometimes content is super intentional and polished, and sometimes it’s just a quick post about something that made you smile (..or cry). I think of content as anything created with the goal of communicating or connecting to others about your passions or even dislikes. Above all else, I believe content is storytelling for the modern day, which is why it's so unique and diverse depending on who’s making it and who’s experiencing it.

My note-taking strategy:

For my in-person classes, I use a notebook and pen. I am rather partial to Sharpie S Gel pens. I used up 6 of them throughout my sophomore year. I only finished 3 in my freshman year. With this course, I just read the textbook with a Word document open, and I write what I need to as I read. For staying organized, I keep many tabs open in a specific order. I keep the larger and more pertinent assignments to the far left of my screen and then place them in a descending size order. I keep my D2L tabs together, and I keep my other tabs to the right of the D2L. So far, it has been working for me. I will see if that continues for the rest of the course.

Shout out to you for including the type of pen you use. I've been using Papermate Inkjoy pens and they are horrible! I will definitely be trying out this brand.

Week 1- Note taking

Because I don’t have a physical textbook for this course my note taking strategy has to be a bit different. Typically, when I have a physical book, I put notes in the margins and highlight important parts. Since I don’t have a physical textbook, I take notes the same way I would during a lecture. I write down content as I come across it. I underline or highlight vocabulary words and their definitions. I also star or underline important/key concepts.

Week 1- Organization

To help myself organize for a new semester, I add a separate calendar specifically for each class to my phone calendar. Then I upload all the assignment due dates into the calendar. After that, I set timed reminders for a day before assignments are due. I chose to do this because I always have my phone with me. I am able to see at any point if I am on track or if I am falling behind. I prefer this over a paper planner because I have a tendency to leave those behind.

Week 1 Ad- Information Architecture

The content is distributed primarily through images. The image is vibrant and catches the eye. The text is big and bold. First your eye focuses on the graphic. The graphic is the main point of the ad with the text being the secondary and clarifying feature. The text is simple and straightforward. The text is a metaphor for vapes leading to cancer. It causes the audience to think about how smoking leads to cancer. It is relevant to the target audience (ages 12-17) because vaping is popular among teens.
