Came across this art installation, Liza Lou's Kitchen, at the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC. It's a kitchen made of tiny glass beads, that artist Liza Lou did, taking 5 yrs. to complete, from 1991 - 1996.
My favorite part is the sink.

There’s one of these in Boston, the Vilna Shul (https://vilnashul.org/about/our_history). The interior painting was primarily a Lithuanian thing, hence why most of them have been destroyed. The Vilna is one of few surviving examples and the murals are perpetually in need of preservation funding.
Eastern European Jewish immigrants arrived in the city of Boston in large numbers beginning in the 1880’s. With little or no income, they lo

The fact alone that Nolan casted a Greek to speak Greek but to be perceived as "barbarian language" by Odysseus and his crew, who spoke in perfect English, that needed a translator to understand him, is next level of disrespect never seen before in Hollywood towards Greeks and it needs to be discussed more
For all my fellow oversharers out there.
As a chronic people-pleaser, this is my advice for success.
Offer as little as possible. Be terse. Get rid of all those exclamation marks and tidbits about why you want to take a sick day. State your needs clearly and concisely without reason. Start saying “No, I’m unable.” more often. Say Thank You only when the other party deserves it.

Happy book birthday to "Who Circled the Globe in Seventy-Two Days? Nellie Bly", written by me and illustrated by the always incredible Rebecca Mock! This new graphic novel from Who HQ follows headstrong stunt journalist Nellie Bly on her famous 1889 round-the-world race -- circling the globe by herself with nothing but a handbag in tow.
It was fascinating getting to research and write about this record-setting Victorian era globe-circling race, and what an important flash-point it was for journalism (and especially women journalists) in the US! But more importantly: Rebecca Mock absolutely knocked this out of the park. Never shirking away from pages and pages of period-accurate 1889 steamships and trains and crowd scenes, and also doing amazing work embodying Nellie Bly's character on the page -- her energy, her stubborn pride, her quick wit, and her all-too-frequent short-sightedness.
The rowdy, adventuresome kids in your life will love this book. Pick one up from your favorite local bookstore or library!
I learned in my political science class that all major famines in the 20th century and onward have been caused by oppressive groups or political situations restricting access to food, NOT natural causes like crop failure
This is literally the point that Indian economist Amartya Sen made that won him the Nobel prize in economics. As a child, he survived one of the several Bengal famines that were organised by the British colonisers in India. He developed his theory on famines, which is that they were more about distribution of food rather than production or availability of it
