This is horrifying, and it makes me think about what I’ve been working on with Intersex Campaign for Equality right now. As of a few weeks ago, bill SB 225 in California was poised to make surgery on intersex infants illegal—which is good, don’t get me wrong—and delay it till the age of 6, when the kid will be able to give informed consent?! No 6-year-old is aware enough of how gravely a surgery like that could affect them, and they’re easily swayed by parents and doctors. At a listening session on Zoom a couple weeks ago, we pushed hard for them to change that age to 15 or 16 at minimum, but preferably 17-18. They went and came back to us with, hey, look, we changed it to 12! Marginally better, but...even a 12-year-old might not have the kind of awareness or education yet to know exactly how their body could be damaged. We’re still writing emails at this point.

This is all to say, this country manages to fuck up even when the intent is starting to head in the right direction. The AL bill is the exact opposite of the right direction. Trans and intersex kids are in so much danger in the US, and it makes me so fucking angry.

If you’re in AL, do everything you can to fight this and protect trans kids and their families. Not everyone will be able to get out. It’s not a well off state economically.

I stand with the women surgeons who were unfairly profiled in the #journalofvascularsurgery for wearing bathing suits, among other perfectly normal things. Being scrutinized for your attire is far too common an experience for women across the globe; and those of us in the medical profession are no strangers to it either.

I sincerely hope that both the journal and the people behind the “study” have learned a tremendous lesson about respecting women and focusing on what truly matters!

To all the women who are doctors, nurses, midwives, PAs, anesthesiologists, EMTs, firefighters, phlebotomists, and every other health profession: 🗣

May we continue to mind the business that pays us well while serving looks!
