Dean gets intense anxiety and Sam gets intense anger

the real thing much to think about is how people see Sam’s issue as just an “intense anger issue” when he literally had a vision of bunch of people cursing and threatening to kill him. 

The problem was you. It was always you. The lies...your arrogance...the black spot on your soul. 

 SAM is very confused and anguished. Other patients surround him. A female patients faces him. 

 Now we're all gonna die because of you.   It's all your fault. You killed all of us. Pathetic freak. 

MALE PATIENT shoves SAM into the other patients. 

 You evil son of a bitch! 

 The patients shove him as they speak. 

Loser. Grow up and die! Freak! 

 Unable to take it anymore, SAM begins hitting the other patients.

 SAM: Leave me alone! Leave me alone! Leave me alone! No! Stop it! Leave me alone! Leave me alone! I didn't do it! Get off of me! Leave me alone! Get off! No! Leave me alone!

wow this is so about sam’s anger issue, the problem is his intense anger with no reason that he can’t control, absolutely not, this is never about his past of being a freak and being treated like a freak, not a fear of being killed by dad, his own brother or hunters he doesn’t even know, just because he is Sam Winchester.

The whole “Sam’s ‘anger’” line in the show strafes me. Even when Lucifer mocks him, in their little mirror convo (“Such anger, young Skywalker”), I would say Luci is either gaslighting Sam or (more likely imo) mocking how helpless Sam is—has always been—in the face of what others decide to do to him. Other humans have controlled Sam’s fate and disposed of him as they pleased (Mary, John, Dean, Bobby, and in season 5 the hunting community at large), supernatural beings including Castiel, Luci himself, and eventually as we discover, to our horror and to Sam’s as well, literal big-G God.

Others have expressed this more eloquently than I am about to, but Sam’s anger isn’t a problem because it’s too outsized; it’s a problem because it is justified, and because it creates inconvenience for others.

As a woman, I can relate the crap out of that.

Okay, so my original post was obviously just a quickie and simplified

But I wasn't saying Sam's anger was wrong or bad? I mean, it's right there that the anger and anxiety isn't even what they normally experience, it's been cranked up to 11

Sam feels guilty about the apocalypse and other things, he fears being outcast, and his reaction to these emotions is anger (and, when cranked all the way up, violence)

Dean feels fear about losing Sam, guilt over the apocalypse, and a great pressure to shoulder all the responsibility which leads him to anxiety (and, cranked up, paranoia)

Of course Sam's anger is justified. So is Dean's anxiety. The show doesn't treat either of them with any respect, because Sam isn't allowed to be angry, he has to be grateful to the all wonderful Dean, and Dean isn't allowed to be anxious, he has to be the manly man who drinks and punches things.

The boys need Therapy with a capital T.

I also think it's interesting that Sam becomes a vegetarian and tries to control his diet and fitness which I think are all his attempts at "purging" himself of that anger. He never really accepts it or acknowledges that it is justified, he instead tries to control it and placate it. He's the one in later seasons who says "Dad did his best" and all that. He's telling himself not to be angry, because he still feels such shame around it.

Whereas Dean can't acknowledge or handle his anxiety, so he leans more and more into his anger. Later season Dean roughs up a vulnerable teenager and I just don't think early Dean would have done that.

The damage to both of the men as they refuse to properly deal with their mental health is huge.

Dean grabbed Sam by the collar and pushed him at the PILOT. Dean punched Sam at least two times because of his anger in S2, crushed impala he was fixing with anger in the same season. He always has been that way, if you don't believe this I can make a list of dean being violent because of anger only from Kripke and Gamble's era.

The anger and the violent expression were ALWAYS part of his character, but people just didn't notice because always his anger has been justified in the show. People were like, yeah, Dean totally is allowed to act out, he deserves to be angry. Unlike Sam. Sam always had to push it down.

The only reason why people have an idea of "Dean suddenly became rough in the late seasons" is because of a bad writing which failed making Dean's anger to be understood by audiences.

If there is another reason, it's because Dean's anger and his acting out has always been justified, so his character never got to be changed. The society has changed, we don't accept those kinds of acting out no more.

I don't know what it is about this post that makes people read something I did not say

I didn't say early Dean wasn't angry or violent. I simply mentioned an instance of him acting in a violent manner that I don't think early Dean would have done. When Dean assaults Kaya, it's something I couldn't imagine early season Dean doing, simply because he was gentler and kinder with vulnerable kids early on.

And What I say is you're wrong. He didn't "lean more and more into his anger" because "Dean can't acknowledge his anxiety". Both boys have anxiety & anger. They showed it differently, especially because Dean's anger was more justified in the show while Sam's not.

Also if you watch the show properly, you will be able to remember Dean slap the kid in S6. The situation justified his action but that was something he always had inside.

Is Dean's anger issue from toxic masculinity? Yes. Dean couldn't acknowledge his anxiety because of toxic masculinity? Yes. Is Dean's anger issue of late seasons from his hidden anxiety? No. That's just poor justification for a man who has an anger issue.
