I think she was maybe just 13 or 14 and she was at another label and they had been telling me about her and said, ‘Do you want to write with this girl?’ and I was like, ‘Sure!’ We hadn’t been set up and I did a writers round and I did a song and she walked up to me and said, ‘Hi, I’m Taylor. I really like that song you did, would you write with me sometime?’ And I was like, ‘Sure!’ Then it was the third thing I did on Tuesday. It was my third write on a Tuesday. She came over after school and we wrote a song called ‘Never Mind’ and I walked out of the room and I said, ‘I’m embarrassed. I don’t know why she even needs me.’ I don’t know why I was there. And I remember somebody saying at the label, ‘Can you get her to write something a little more country? And I remember the conversation verbatim and I said, ‘No, I’m not gonna get her to do anything. She knows exactly who she is and exactly what she’s doing and she’s gonna write her stuff.’ And literally we had this conversation. And she and I, I listened to her, I didn’t mess with her lyrics. Sometimes, the mechanics, you would go ‘Oh, you can’t really say that’ or ‘Maybe this isn’t proper or right’ but I let her say it because they were her songs and I just didn’t mess with her and that’s why she stuck with me.
