A Tree is never only a Tree / A line of light
The Garden of Carregal, once created as a traditional romantic garden, became a
forgotten place in time. In the 19th Century, the time of romantic gardens, light played an important role in landscape design. Light was used to organise a space and to open up the views of only select parts of a garden. The same was true of the Garden of Carregal, designed with a dark, mystic atmosphere due to the many different kinds of conifers. One of them was the very rare Sequoia tree. But as time went by, the garden and its atmosphere changed: Today, you can neither feel the mystic quality nor the select illuminated views but, in a certain way, the dark atmosphere remained. The garden changed because of both, changes in the surrounding area, and the decreased number of trees. The concept of “A line of light” deals with the historical value of light and with the current local conditions. The dead Sequoia tree is a call to remind people to be more aware of the value of trees and green spaces in the city. By highlighting the loss of the rare tree, soon to be gone forever, the intervention works as a signal. At the same time it will brighten up the space through the white colour that leads through the garden. The foundation of the idea goes back to the traditional technique of caring for trees called whitewashing. Whitewashing is still commonly used in fruit orchards and has always been a necessary part of tree carie. It has been used for hundreds of years to protect the bark against frost in strong winters and to minimise sun damage through the reflective white colour of the lime wash. In order to support the idea of protection, every tree will be wrapped in a white fabric that covers a part of the bark like a bandage. The line, a visual connection of the wrapped trees in the garden, will only be seen from one perspective, thus making one aware that every tree counts and plays an important role in creating a place’s atmosphere. In the end, the installation will make the trees and the Garden of Carregal return to people’s minds. It might also start a discussion about how to manage the city’s trees. For the local residents, the Garden of Carregal will be the dark garden that has been illuminated once again. This, together with the event of the cutting down the Sequoia Tree, will make the garden remain in our memories.

It is intended to encourage continued reflection and experimentation, varied in nature according to the particular objectives of each student, led to experimentation and implementation of interventions in the public space understood in its broadest operability, since for example punctual interventions of a temporary nature, the study of the impact of social and urban art in the public space, all the way through to the understanding of electronic informational space as an arena of intervention on a social space. The course involves the development of a project-oriented work, consistently matured in conjunction with other subject matters in the course, looking on the one hand, to encourage the student’s autonomy, and on the other, inciting moments of collective and collaborative research. Outcomes are varied in nature, consisting both in moments of small-scale experiments, as well as in real or virtual interventions, and public space interventions.
