Men do not have the same associations with sex as women do, and they never will. Even a non-traditional socialization in men will not change this in the current society. At worst, men have performance anxiety and fear rejection, and that is it. That is the extent of their fucking woes. They don’t associate sex with disgust, lack of purity, or violation of their bodies. They don’t grow up thinking it’s something taken from them or something done to them. They aren’t afraid of being used for it, being used as a tool. They don’t grow up knowing that the images of them, their parts and their orifices are masturbated to, each time more degrading and violent than the last. This allows them to have a casual non-chalant approach to sex devoid of these additional emotional repercussions that come with engaging in it for us. They don’t grow up fearful to death of sex. They’re simply not afraid.

They also don’t grow up being taught that their first time will inherently bring tearing, bleeding, and excruciating pain. I was terrified of my first time, and since it was with a teenage boy who didn’t give two shits about me, is was just as bad as I had imagined.

This is really disturbing to think about. Even as an adult I know personally I still am unpacking so much toxic bullshit I was taught or internalized from media about sex. I remember being so scared as a teen at the horrifying stories told about women’s first time and the blood and pain. And so many people push heterosexual sex on girls as inevitable. As something we still are just supposed to lie back and take as it’s done to us. No other options were given. Safe sex was barely touched upon, let alone consent.

it’s sending your child away to live with a billet for a chance to play on a Junior A team a chance to realize their dreams for however long

it’s buying season tickets to Junior A hockey teams to have a front row seat to their youth and their heart and their willingness to volunteer in their community (in schools, in programs, on special days) their willingness to be a hero to the kids to look further than their own hockey careers and invest in the ones coming up after them

in rural Canada, Junior A hockey teams aren’t just hockey teams they’re knit into the very fabric of the community

they give everyone something to talk about something to invest in in the long cold winter

they carry hearts they carry hopes they carry dreams

this is why the whisper sounds this is why the news spreads this is why there’s an outpouring of sympathy as the news pierces to our hearts
