Castor and Pollux

Happy Samhain! I am sadly very sick on my favorite holiday, so i have a small snippet i wrote from a fic i'm 100% not writing in the background because i can't focus on one thing lol. Enjoy!

The cool desert breeze danced around two boys, hand in hand. They sat together looking up, staring at the stars and nursing their wounds.

They tended to sit together like this often, a moment of peace just for them. Sometimes they’d talk, and other ones they’d stay quiet the entire time. But they’d always be together.

The Spare, who had uncharacteristically stayed silent, finally spoke up.

“We should leave.” The Spare said, still staring up at the glittering stars.

His twin, the Heir, scoffed.

“tt. Akhi , to leave is to defect. And Grandfather would not let us leave alive. What reason do we even have to go?” The Heir huffed, turning to face his brother. “We are the Demon twins, the al ghul heirs. You will be my shadow, and i will take over after Grandfather. Tomorrow, we will pass the test and come back victorious, passing Grandfather’s first real test and then turning 10 together.”

The Spare stays silent for a moment, finally turning to face his brother. “But what if i don’t want this life? I want to be like the village children, i want to play. And celebrate your birthday, or just do what we want. You could have pets, and i could study the stars. Why can’t we have that?” He asks, quiet and fearful. After all, anyone could be listening.

The Heir stays silent, turning back to the stars. They sit for a while before he can respond. “Then leave. I will not stop you.”

“Akhi, no. Not without you. Wherever you are is where I belong.” The Spare assures, turning his twin to look back at him. “We are like the gemini constellation. You are my Pollux, and without you I cannot exist. Dami, I just wish we had a different, a better life.” The Spare utters, pulling his other half into a hug.

They savor it, only allowed such comforts in times like this, where they are alone together. But soon they must pull apart and head to bed, lest they be caught by any guards.

“Danyal?” The Heir speaks before they settle down, both laying in their bed.

“Yes?” The Spare waits, staring at the ceiling.

“We will pass the test, both of us. You are my Castor, my other half, and I will not let us be separated.” The Heir silently declares, with only the two to hear his words.

The Spare doesn’t respond for a while. It’s only when the Heir is drifting off that he hears him respond.

“Dami, thank you. I- I love you.” The Spare murmurs, the Heir barely able to hear. But he does, and he will not let his other half think he’s unwanted.

“I love you too, Danny. Goodnight.” The Heir is able to whisper, knowing his twin will hear even as they both fall asleep. It was a quiet night, like all the rest. They didn’t know that on that cold but clear night, together in Nanda Parbat with whispered promises weaving through the breeze, that it would be their last night together on that sand for a long time.

his robe is actually printed not embroidered! historically, fabric like this would have been hand-printed with a series of complex, interlocking carved wooden blocks like this:

this is actually better than embroidered given the goal of costuming as 'communicating a lot of info about a character without exposition'. Banyan robes like this would have been worn as fashionable 'undress' at home by gentlemen - so not really appropriate to be traipsing around doing naturalist things. But, from this production's standpoint it is serving to show Maturin as softer, more 'natural' and more casual in contrast to the more stiff/traditional naval characters.

by the early 19th c. embroidery was already largely relegated to formal wear for men, until it basically disappeared from menswear almost entirely later in the century (aside from occasional exceptions like livery or a subtle design on a waistcoat or an emblem or something).

Cottons printed in India - like chintz and calico (both words derive from Hindi) - and later, fabrics printed in Europe which basically copied Indian design & aesthetics wholesale, were very popular for more informal clothing in the west starting in the later part of the 18th century. Here's a dress with a quite similar pattern from a similar period:

The wiki lists banyans as being inspired by kimono, but considering the relatively limited exposure the west had to Japanese material goods prior to the mid 19th c. and the fact that 'banyan' has sanskrit origins, I think it's far more likely that the style of garment was inspired by the many open-robe style overgarments worn throughout the near east and through southeast Asia.

Many banyans were imported garments with minimal modification, (or even could be made directly for export to the European market - a similar thing happened in the late 19th century with Western women snapping up and wearing kimono as dishabille at the height of late 19th c. Japonisme)

We've all heard of youtuber/streamer Danny. But what about tumblr blogger Danny. It's mostly just him info dumping, usually about space, nasa, ect.. but eventually he branches out. Sharing information on Martian and Kryptonian culture. Culture he as a kid from a small town in Illinois should *not* know.

Queue Tim finding the blog and joking about an 'unknown' Martian fact to Martian Manhunter. It was in the vein of how one would joke to a vampire about sparkling in the sun. Assumed and typically wrong. But Jon just freezes and ask, "How did you know that?"

Now Tim has to show everyone the blog, and all of them now need to track down the kid who makes these post and find out *how* he knew all this. It's quiet chaos, that only gets worse when Tim tries to track the IP and just hits a green screen. (Tecknus fire wall)

Bruce decides it's time to make a trip to investigate undercover. Once they get a location based roughly on town pictures the kid posted. Tim makes a comment about teaching internet safety quietly.

Just responded to a post that made me realize something that most non comic book centric dpxdc folks might not know.

Alfred is dead. He has been dead since 2019 in the comics. He’s died previously and come back but this time it’s not quite clear if he will come back or not or any buildup that shows he may be returning.

Dead Alfred could be an incredible addition to DPxDC fics. Does Alfred move on fully? Does Batman ask Phantom alone if he can see if his father figure is still out there in the afterlife? Does he stay and become a completely new person as his ghostly nature takes hold of him? Is he the same as always? Does he haunt the Waynes? Does he haunt the Manor? Does he become a butler in the ghost zone? Does he reunite with Martha and Thomas in the ghost zone? Does he scour everywhere to find them nowhere to be found?

So many cool concepts can arise from Alfred’s canonical death in current DC.
