Is Marx’s Critique of religion as the “opiate of the masses” relevant to the event you attended?

- yes, I believe that Marx’s critique of religion is relevant to the Masjid because a lot of Muslim people base their believes and knowledge off of the Quran.

 Can you identify particular symbols (Geertz) unique to this religious community and determine their meaning? What do you think gives them their power and authority (Asad)?

-         The Quran and believing Allah is an important factor of the Islam culture. Many people base their everyday living from the Quran and what Allah believes in. Eid Mubarak is also a key symbol in the Muslim community.  The Eid is an event that takes place after Muslims fast (not eat food) for a certain period of time throughout each day as a way of receiving blessings and coming together.

How does power make itself evident during your visit? What power relationships did you observe? 

-         At the Masjid, I believe power is evident throughout the whole setting because Muslims place all of their faith into Allah when praying and throughout their everyday lives they believe that he has the final say so.

Can you identify any ways in which globalization influences the religious beliefs and practices that you observe?  

-         I believe that globalization influences the religious beliefs and practices of Allah because the Muslim community is expanding every day. The beliefs are getting passed on through out the world from country to country .

·     Throughout the interactions with my parents of course they hold all the power. In my house hold my mother holds all the power. She pays all the bills, supplies me and siblings with a roof over our head and clothes on our back. Gender also may pay a role in her having power in the house hold pertaining to my brothers. They have to respect her not only because she is their mother but because she is a female.

·         Power plays a part in the interactions with my siblings being though I am the third child out of 4, my older siblings hold a little power over me as well as myself having some power over my youngest sibling. I sometimes have to listen to what my older siblings tell me because the role they pay. My brother however has to respect his sisters as females so that gives us power over him with gender.

·         When interacting with professionals such as my professors, administration, doctors, managers, etc they hold power because of the knowledge they give and age. I was always taught to treat others how you want to be treated but the age difference gives them more power simply because they have the authority and power over the younger.

·         I believe that my friends, my peers and myself share the same amount of power. Age is a factor of the power we hold because we are the same age they don’t have power over me but get and receive the same respect .

·         The state and government such as police officers, construction workers, and board education hold power over me simply because it’s the law to follow. For example, when driving there are rules to follow such as having on a seat belt and stopping at red lights, construction workers make you detour when they are working, the board of education make you take classes and certain courses to move on to they next grade or even graduate.

This article shows how the government in Afghanistan uses power of religion to control citizens and their beliefs. It shows how their are some developments today that involve the community and are trying to improve the country with schools, bridges etc.

I interviewed a family friend named Maya Morales.

 Hi, my name is Maya Morales. I am 20 years old and I am originally from Mexico. My family and I moved to the United States when I was about 7 years old.  It took a long time for us to actually move to the united states being that my parents had low paying jobs and we were not legal in America but when we finally did I can see that it made my parents happy.  My dad found better job opportunities with my uncles that moved before us, working for a moving company.  When I first came to America it was a big culture shock to me.  My cousins that I began to hang around that were born in America grew up way different than I did in Mexico. When I was younger, my mother and I would go out to different markets to get food and go back home to prepare food for our house. My cousins that grew up in America have the ability to get food brought to them from time to time and they don’t help around the house as much. Since being in America, my parents always tell me to work hard for what I need and never take things for granted. Compared to America, I can say that I didn’t receive the proper education back home in Mexico. When moving to America with my family I can see how we began to receive many more opportunities and blessings. Our family business has expanded and improved so now we are able to send money back home to other relatives so they can have a better life. However, my parents are concerned with what will happen with the president wanting to build a wall and things of that nature because then my family that worked so hard to come over to America may be sent back.

Chapter 10 Fieldwork assignment

I would say that I have a equal amount of family on each my mother and father’s side. My grandmother on my mother’s side has 3 children including my mother and her two brothers. I have 3 siblings on my mother side so that makes 4 of us all together. One of my mother’s brother (my uncle) has 3 children. My other uncle has no children but is married. On my father’s side I have 3 siblings, one who I share the same mother with, a stepbrother, a younger brother and a younger sister.  My father has 2 sisters on his mother side. one of his sisters has 3 daughters and one of them has a son. My father’s other sister has two adopted children and 1 of them has a daughter. I believe that I have more cousins on my father side because of the fact that my great grandmother adopted so many children and they have had children as well.

Chapter 8 Fieldwork Assignment

While watching TV there are many commercials that come on to advertise the hottest new toys coming out, the hottest new fashion or sometimes are based on characters featured on the TV shows that are broadcasted, usually to get kids excited and to get their parents to buy them to play with or wear.

Commercials For Girls 

Some things that I noticed about the commercials for girls are that they are most often colorful and very bright colored. The little girls often time speak in a clam and soft manner. The commercials sometimes are based on characters featured on the TV shows that are broadcasted. Some commercials for girls were advertising “Pop-Art” which is a colorful 3D art kit which allows girls to be creative and express their imagination.

Commercials For Boys

Somethings I noticed about the commercials for boys are that they are sometimes aggressive. Some commercials for boys are advertising the popular teenage mutant ninja turtles which includes several action figures that are being smashed and ran over by trucks.

When referring to a white Person simply say WHITE. Do not I repeat DO NOT say Caucasian. It only shows that you fear them by censoring your speech and finding a more not so hurtful name for them to be called. But just call them what they are my dear, WHITE!

During my access week, we watched a movie called The Great Debater which has become one of my favorite movies. The movie shows how a professor teaches at a predominately black college and starts a debate team that competes against white schools and gets treated unfairly due to racism in their town. The movies shows how black people should always stick together and never give up just because “the white man” doesn't allow it.
