Chapter 15 Fieldwork Justin Medley 12/3
This Sunday, i went with my family to a church service in Parkville where i live. It was a majority black christian church with a lot of people and music in the service. The general attire for sunday church services are dress ware, but casual clothes are just as acceptable
1. Sacred objects or acts in the church: The holy bible, the Cross that symbolizes the crucifixion of jesus christ, bowing your head praying with everyone when the service begins.
Profane objects or acts in the church: i think offensive gestures like cursing, being loud, being disrespectful towards the church, things like that.
2.
Seperation in church:
Physically going to a church or place of worship. Also wearing certain church or dress attire for the worship ceremony. Also it might include getting baptized, eating and drinking the host of jesus christ.
Liminality in church:
The text books definition of liminality is “a stage in the right of passage during which a ritual participate experiences a period of outsiderhood, set apart from normal society that is key to achieving a new perspective on the past future and current community”. As far as i know, I really cant think of many examples of liminality in a christian church. The closest thing i could think of is maybe a baptism
Reincorporation in church:
Reincorporation would be the enlightened feeling someone get after being baptized and use that experience to better understand their religion and the world.
3. Being in a majority black church, you can definitely tell that religion is an “opiate” to a lot of these people. They need religion to get through the day and gives them a sense of purpose and a higher meaning to their existence.
4. The Cross reprensents the gruesome death of Jesus Christ and how he died for our sins and rose from the grave. Its a sacred reminder of the power of god and faith through adversity. The bread and wine during communion ceremonies represent the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ himself. When you eat the bread and wine your symbolically taking in and becoming one with Jesus Christ.
5. While at the church, it’s apparent that the pastor heading the ceremony has most of the power as far as i can observe. He is the leader and the one that the church goers look to for everything that has something to do with the church.
6. From what i saw i dont think globalization influenced any of the people in the church (im probably wrong when looking at a grander scale). Only think i could think of is if people in a very wealthy country believe in one religion, people who are in search of religion might look into that religion because its followers are living good.

This article is basically talking about how religion has such a grasp on human culture and how power in such religious cultures effect the world. One of the examples it uses is “Al-Qaeda” the terrorist group. “Take Al-Qaeda for instance. They see their mission as an international revolution to bring about a global government under Islamic rule. They call it the Khalifa, and its strength is gained via a new universal creed that fuses Leninist revolutionary tenets with the religion of Islam” (Ron Fraser) . The power of Islam is so powerful that some may misconstrue it and use it as a medium to do harm to or kill others that are not a believer of the faith.
Chapter 14 Fieldwork Justin Medley 11/28/17
If I could sum up all the interactions I have throughout the day it would consist of these individuals:
Mother
Siblings
Friends
Coworkers
Managers
Customers
Classmates
Professors (and Teaching Assistants)
—————————————————————-
Mother
Well of course my mother is the person that gave birth to me so she has all the power in the household. She has all of the financial and authoritive power in the house. Her power is probably organized by her age and maybe her gender as a mother. I don’t think there is any political negotiations between me and her.
Siblings
I’m actually the oldest of four children, so I actually have the most power when it comes to us. My younger sister is 17 and my twin brother and sister are 12. I literally just turned 20 (11/27) so because of our ages, i have the most power next to my mother in the house. Also because i am a male, im also granted power to protect my younger brother and female sisters. I doubt there are any political negotiations between us.
Friends
I don’t think my group of friends have any type of power dynamic between us, but that may change depending on what we are doing or planning. Out of my group of friends only one of us have a car, so if we want to go somewhere or do something it all depends on that person driving us. That seems like the only instance where one of us has power over everyone else.
Coworkers
Coworkers are sort of in the same ballpark as friends, considering i get along with about all of my coworkers. Since all of us are under the power of our managers, we have no power dynamic between each other. Since were all at the same job we have a general understanding of each other for the most part.
Managers
My managers on the othet hand have a lot of power over me. My managers tell me what to do and how to do it while I’m at work. Many of my managers are females, so that may influence how I respond to them and their input on my work. My managers has the authority to FIRE ME (affecting my financial stability) so they hold immense power over me consistently im a college student.
Customers
The dynamic between me and the customers can be really weird sometimes. Im a cashier at a supermarket and anyone who has worked with the public knows that the people can be really difficult sometimes, especially when it comes to human necessities like food and nourishment. One moment a customer can be really interesting, funny, and entertaining and if they get that from you they could go as far as going to your manager and giving you a compliment about you (I’ve gotten a few compliments). But on the other hand if you have a bad experience with a customer they could go to your manager and complain about you and then you’ll get a write up (I’ve gotten 2 write ups from interactions from customers)
Classmates
I don’t really think there is a power dynamic with my classmates. In all of my classes, i only know a few of my classmates. I think the only time a power dynamic can be used between classmates is if one student is asking another student for help with school work or tutoring. Same with being coworkers, Since were all college students and we know how hard it is we have a general understanding with each other and will try to help each other when needed.
Professors
My professors, like my managers, hold a lot of power of me. They essentially are in control of my grade and my educational experience. They decide how good and bad my work is. As a student, it would be best for me to please my professor the best i can for the sake of my grade. Considering the professor for the most part has most of the power in our dynamic, I don’t think there can be any political negotiations.
My encounters with the state:
News media (CNN, NBC, MSNBC, Local news, etc)
I don’t really watch much television or news media but when I do I mainly watch these news outlets to keep in touch with things in our country as far as politics and foreign affairs.
Social media
Because I’m on social media most of the day I see a lot of tweets from media outlets and also our Erratic president.
Police
I live in Baltimore, at least once a day I see a police car or police officer somewhere in my area. Because police officers are workers of the state, their presence is meant to protect their assigned community and enforce the given laws of this state.
Television/Movies
I mainly see representations of the state and a lot of action/drama movies and TV shows. Even though most of it is fictional and not real, A lot of it is based off of real events and scenarios that are state goes through every day any reinforces the ideas around our state.
Fieldwork Chapter 14
In error, I forgot to assign your fieldwork assignment for the chapter on power, Please follow the directions below and submit via BlackBoard before Thursday.
Every relationship has a powerful dynamic. In some, you have power over another person. In others, someone has power over you or the dynamic of power may shift back and forth depending on the circumstances.
Make a list of all the relationships and interactions you have in the course of a day: with family, friends, teachers, students, and others. Or watch a television show or movie and observe the relationships of power represented there.
1. Describe the way power is balanced in each relationship you experience or observe.
2. How is power organized? Can you see the intersections of age, gender, income, race, religion, sexuality, or citizenship?
3. What political negotiations are present in these relationships?
4. Consider how these power dynamics were established and how they might be changed.
5. To deepen your understanding of the power of the state, make a list of all the ways you encounter the state in a given day. These may be at home, at school, in the office, or on the street. Representations of the state on television and radio, as well as in newspapers or movies, all contribute to the construction of the state as concrete, real, and powerful.
6. How do these representations of the state reinforce the conception of the state as the primary institutional form through which social relations are experienced?

Migration Interview Fieldwork
Justin Medley Anthropology 11/18/17
I interviewed my coworker Luis who works with me. It was a dope conversation cuz honestly i just thought he was just of Mexican decent, but i had no idea he was born in cuba 🇨🇺
Hello, my name is Luis Monteagudo. Im 22 years old and I currently live in Baltimore, Maryland. I was born in Camaguey, Cuba with my mother, father, and older sister. I lived in camaguey until i was 6, then we came to east baltimore. My father and my uncle actually came to america first by themselves and worked for about 3 years under a plumbing company until they had enough money to bring me, my mom, and my sister to maryland.
I grew up in the highland town area of south east baltimore. I went to Sinclair lane elementary school, highland town middle school, and I graduated from patterson high school. I am currently attending baltimore city community college and working a part time job.
Even though i barely remember it, Living in camaguey was actually pretty good. Me and my family lived in a small 2 bedroom house in camaguey. I remember it being a lot of churches and stone buildings in the area. It was always music in the streets.
When we all moved to highland town, it took me about 2 years to learn decent English. I don’t know when my sister learned english but i think my father taught her since he was the first one to come to America. My mother was the only one of us that had the longest time learning English cuz she stayed home and took cared of the house. My father still works at his plumbing company and my mother works at a bakery. My sister works as a cook at a restaurant.
Living in America made me realize how much i love and miss camaguey, but also how much I don’t. Ever since we moved here, we’ve only went back to camaguey twice. The providence of camaguey is very small and dense, and their aren’t as many things to do as far as recreation. As you know, America has everything you can think of, so for the majority of my life I really loved it here but camaguey will always be my second home.
