A LETTER TO MY 16 YEAR OLD SELF
You have finally graduated high school. It has been really tough, and they did not give you the athlete of the year award that you worked hard for and deserved. You kept on questioning yourself why it happened and why you did it. But it is fine, because it was your mistake. Let this college ride take you to another challenging but fun adventure. You will lose some people along the way, but do not be bothered, the ones who stayed are the ones who are worth keeping. As you continue your life as a Benildean Student - Athlete, you will face something really tough, people will doubt and bring you down. You will want to give up the one thing you love the most, taekwondo. But you will prove them wrong, young one, just be patient with yourself and the people around you.
As you grow older, you will start questioning yourself and your worth, you will be bringing yourself down, to the point wherein you will want to die. But young one, there is more to life than giving up. Please know that there are people around you who will support and love you for who you are, especially your family. Prioritize them over anything else, because they are the only people who will help you when you are at your lowest. Always be ready for difficulties and grab all opportunities and blessing that will come to you.
MOST OF ALL, please, please, PLEASE, GUARD YOUR HEART. Someone really special will break it. Someone who will mean the world to you, and someone who will always have a special place in your heart. That one person is someone who you can never let go of, in ALL different angles of life. That person will bring out the best and the worst in you. Do not get me wrong, young one, you are loved by that person too, but time and destiny has a different way of breaking everything that both of you have built, the friendship that anyone nor anything can ever replace. Even though you both have not been talking to each other up to this day, you know in yourself that you will always love that person and you will do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to have that person back.
You will leave the Philippines, your home, before you turn 21, and it is going to hurt more than a heartbreak. You will cry yourself to sleep, you will desperately want to go back home. You will, again, lose friends along the way. But as time will pass by, you will start to adapt the American culture and you will realize that it is okay, that you will be okay. You will start to care less, you will meet and learn to interact with different kinds of people, and you will slowly mature without even noticing it.
Finally, young one, never stop chasing your dreams, never stop whatever you enjoy, never stop loving and never stop forgiving. Forgiveness is one of the greatest gift that money can never buy, and it will forever give you inner peace. So please young one, do not lose yourself along the way. Learn to love yourself first before you start to learn to love others. Live your life to the fullest and just keep on moving forward, because you deserve nothing but the best this life has to offer.
