NOTES: Sam has some new for Olivia.
Sam cradled two bowl server style in his hand. He'd spent the better part of the afternoon making his famous beef stew. A good hearty meal and necessary conversation were on the agenda for tonight. He added another spoonful of stew to Olivia's bowl, before moving into the dining room setting them down. “Livia! Dinner!" He called. He squinted at the table, cups, bowls, check. Spoons, drinks... he snapped his fingers, "Oh shoot, I forgot the rolls" He mumbled, jogging back into the kitchen.
Olivia was laying on her bed, listening to her music, and sketching when she heard her dad’s voice. Taking the headphones out her ear she put her ipod in her draw and put on her slipper socks. Before going to eat she stepped into the bathroom to wash her hands. Once done she went downstairs to see her dad’s famous beef stew on the table. “You haven’t made this in a while. Special Occasion?”
Sam stepped back into the dining room carrying a covered basket of rolls. He smiled, setting the basket in the middle of the table. "I don't need a special occasion to treat my amazing daughter." He said, pulling out her chair. “Have seat kiddo.”
Olivia sat down and said grace over her food before digging in not bothering to wait for her dad. “How was your day?” She picked a roll up and stuffed it in her mouth.
Sam waited for Olivia to sit, then through his leg over the side of his chair lowering himself into his seat. He smirked watching her pray, at least he'd done somethings right. At her ‘Amen’ He tacked on his own, "Amen. -Not going to wait on your old man I see?” Picking up his spoon he shoveled his first spoonful into his mouth and closed his eyes reverently, “I can’t blame you…” He said, going for another spoonful. “It was okay. Better now.” He smiled. “How did the test go?”
“Haven’t eaten anything since lunchtime.” Olivia took another roll and dipped it in the stew before placing it in her mouth and starting to chew. Olivia smiled when he said his day was better. Olivia swallowed her food before picking a napkin up and wiping her mouth. “Pretty okay, had some questions on there I wasn’t prepared for but I think I got it. You have any new drawings?”
Sam reached forward taking a roll from the basket, he ripped it in two, then added a spat of butter to his bread, spreading it out. "Oh really? But you think you got it anyway? Awesome." He popped the bread into his mouth, raising his eyebrow. "I'm working on something special. A new comic book. Sort of a modern day wonder twins."
“Yep, I am your daughter after all.” Olivia took 2 big spoonfuls of stew and put it in her mouth. “That’s great dad. Twins? That’s cool. Can I ask you a question?”
Sam offered her a dry chuckle that sounded more like a cough. Her book smarts didn’t come from him, he was sure of that. “You don’t sound interested at all. I might be about to change that. How would you like to do some work for me on the comic book?” He took up another spoonful of stew, watching her over his spoon, “Sure. what’s on your mind?”
“Oh no I’m interested you said wonder twins and it made me think but that’s for another day. Really? I’ll like that. Thank you. I know we never talked about her in detail but what was my mom like?”
“Sure… It made you think what? Don’t cut off your thoughts like that.” Sam asked curiously. “Yes really, It will be good experience for you -And we’d get to spend more time together.” He put his spoon down and sat up back straight in his seat. “Umm, what brought this on?" He asked, nervously.
“Dad it is nothing. I’ll talk to you about it another time. Yay to us spending more time together and us getting to work together. I see all the other girls at my school with their moms and it started to make me wonder.”
“I’ll let it rest for now.” Sam told her around a mouthful of stew. Olivia was getting older, he wasn't sure if spending hours hanging out with him was still on her to do list. “I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not.” He said squinting at his daughter. He nodded considering his words, he wanted to talk to her along those lines for sometime now but couldn't find the right time or words. “What... Am I not a good dad?” He asked, a hollow attempt at lightening the mood. “You know if you ever need to talk to a woman about stuff," He said, scratching at the side of his face. "Mrs. Adele is here and… and Rachel.” He added to test the waters. “You she is growing fond of you.”
Olivia took another roll and dipped it into her stew before placing it in her mouth. “I’m not always being sarcastic dad.” Olivia squinted her eyes at her dad not knowing where that comment came from. “You know you a good dad I was just wondering about her that’s all.” At the mention of Rachel’s name Olivia rolled her eyes. “You really want me to like her don’t you?”
Sam chuckled, “I know, but I had to check.” He lifted his spoon, shoveling another heap of stew into his mouth. He chewed the thick concoction of carrots, beef and potatoes, then swallowed it down. “Yes,” He said mouth still working. He sighed setting his fork down again, “I know it’s always been Evans & Evans around here. But I was wondering how you’d feel about making an addition to the team?” He asked voice hopeful.
Olivia sat back in her chair and eyed her dad as he ate. She knew he wanted her to like Rachel but something wouldn’t allow her to do so. Maybe it was because she was stubborn and didn’t like nobody. “You mean Rachel living here? Fine. Your house your rules. I don’t know if I’ll ever like her but she’s special to you so I put my dislike for her to the side.” Olivia gave her dad a sweet smile and went back to eating.
“Yes. I think it’ll be good for you. -for me -for both of us.” Sam stumbled over his tongue, explaining his actions. He sat dumbfounded for a moment, when she so quickly gave in."Did you just say it's fine?" He asked needing to hear her say it again. “Don’t say it like that. It’s not just my house. This is our home. Honestly, I didn’t expect you to love the idea." He said reaching over to take her hand. "But i’m glad you're willing to give it a chance.
“Yes, it’s fine. I don’t love the idea but you do care for Rachel so I’ll grow to love it.” Olivia gave him a sincere smile. “There was a mother daughter thing at my school last week. I seen all the girls with their moms and it made me think about mine. Can you tell me one thing about my mom?”
The chair's legs drug across the floor as Sam rose from the table. He held his arms out and moved over to his daughter side, grabbing her up in a bear hug. He kissing her forehead, repeatedly, holding back dad tears. He swallowed thickly, as he moved back to his seat, choked up by his child sentiment. Clearing his throat and wiping at the corner of his eye, “You could ask Rachel to take to go with you? I could ask her for you.” He pulled his chair back to the table. “One thing… hmm one thing. Let’s see. Well all those brains you have? They come from her. She was a genius.” He said a far gone look in his eye.
“You know I love you right? It’s okay I dealt with it and I’m okay. Maybe if there is another thing at my school for mother and daughters I’ll either ask Adele or Rachel.” Olivia’s eyes lit up when he said she got her brains from her mom. “Wow that’s cool. I get my brains from her and my drawing skills from you. Best of both worlds. When Rachel moving in?”
Sam gave her a level look. “It’s me we are talking about. What's not to love?” He was starting to get worried. She was being so level headed and mature about the situation. It was off putting. “That would be nice…” he trailed off, squinting. Nope, this wasn't his child. Not at all. “You could say that. She is a comic book fan as well, so…” He added fondly. He and Mercedes had some good times before the end, that much he was sure of.
“Oh that’s easy, your big head.” Olivia chuckled at her own joke. “Mom liked comic books? She probably liked Thor?”
“Yea. She did.” Sam smirked. “HA HA, you got jokes I see. -Finish your supper.” He said taking a roll from the basket.
