My high school taught this in 2013 American history (it was an honors course though) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ my guess is some schools don’t, but also a lot of y'all didn’t care back then so you don’t recall this being taught to you

Bc people don't remember things they learned in high school if they didn't care about them. Most people I knew gave 0 shits about history. Retention rates for high school topics is pretty low. And most people I knew from my high school did not become anti capitalist/feminist/communist/whatever else until college. The few that did care about this type of thing only did so when they got Tumblr and were exposed to these sorts of ideas. "Y'all" is anyone who claimed this isn't being taught tbh

Also... speaking of methodology. The original post has none. Just a bunch of people chiming in with their personal experiences of whether they were/weren't taught this. So why inquire about my "methodology" and take my comment personally? Unless somebody (hint: not gonna be me) does a survey of the content of the textbooks in current US history classes and does a survey of what high schools do/don't teach this (& if they do teach it, for how long they've been teaching it) there's no way to claim this is purposely "hidden". People have shoddy ass memories so relying on claims from people who don't remember being taught something (even if the topic very well may have been covered) is poor "methodology."

I even said I'm sure some schools actually don't teach this. (& I'm absolutely sure the Jackson state shooting isn't covered nearly as often because it is a historically black college and black history is unfortunately not covered well in US high schools)

I’m reading this thing about how farmers in Japan considered thunderstorms to be good luck because they’d make more mushrooms grow so some Japanese scientists created this lil electrical machine that they wheeled through the forest administering shocks to the ground to simulate lightning strikes and the areas that they shocked yielded twice as many mushrooms as unshocked plots of land ⚡️🍄

Hey! We;ve noticed the same thing up here in CO! in general, the more strikes we have in summer, the better the mushroom season tends to be!

in CO that also typically means there’s more rain in the mountains but given how goddamn weird fungi are it completely makes sense that getting hit by lightning makes them sprout reproductive organs.

A special eye protein is helping birds to “see” Earth’s magnetic field! If that’s not cool, I don’t know what is.

The ability to see Earth’s magnetic field, known as magnetoreception, relies on the presence of specifically the blue wavelength of light. The complex process involves “radical” intermediate molecules which are sensitive to Earth’s magnetic field. The Earth’s magnetic field, as it relates to the direction the bird is facing, could alter the intermediate radical molecules differently, giving the bird a sense for where it is facing in relation to the Earth’s magnetic field.

While the exact way birds visualize Earth’s magnetic field is part of further investigation, scientists believe the Cry4 protein acts as sort of a filter over the bird’s vision. This filter would allow birds to see a sort of compass of the Earth and direct their migratory flights accordingly.

it doesn’t feel right to celebrate #earthday without recognizing that Indigenous people, specifically women, are affected by systematic environmental degradation.

and we can do more than just “recognize” that fact, we can use our coin to affect change. here’s a link for ‘indigenous environmental network'

i am not native but it really takes a few minutes to either look for indigenous-headed environmental organizations or look for recommendations by indigenous people that you follow on social media. some people might prefer you donate to specific orgs but it’s really about doing research and following through as a non-native.
