Everybody got a coming of age story.

Well as a mixed women with a white mom I’ve got a coming of black story.

My friend’s mom and my mom were friends. This is a vital win. So I’m at my friend’s house. My hair is a mess. My mom is white and divorced, this is to be expected.

My friend’s mom’s friend, let’s call her the Fairy, happens to see me. Yes the Fairy is black. She offers, my mom accepts. I’m getting micro braids. I’m sat between this woman’s legs on a pillow, her on the couch. I can almost smell my dad, is exactly how he used to braid my hair when I was a baby.

She put on R Kelly in the closet. My life changes. Her husband comes over and they converse. It changes again.

I don’t know them and they don’t know me, but I understand them and they understand me in a way I hadn’t since with my dad. I thought it was a my dad thing. It wasn’t only that. They knew what skin products I would need. They knew some styles for me to use when my hair came down. They understood what that skin condition was. They knew what the teachers really meant and really wanted when they said xyz. They knew the answers to all the questions I hadn’t even known to ask.

I never ever want to hear “well, they only joined the US military because they wanted to go to college/get healthcare/escape poverty” again. ESPECIALLY now. The Trump administration has worked very hard to undermine all veteran resources. You will fight and die or be permanently physically and mentally destroyed for American imperialism and then end up homeless and destitute. That truth is transparent now more than ever, even with the government funneling money into advertising and propaganda and recruiting.
