thinking about the fact that in midnight burger all the aliens speak English bc everyone loves media from earth, and everyone watches earth tv, and they’ve made shows about earth and all that. And most of (if not all) the examples the show uses are either based in the US or Eurocentric. It’s classical music. It’s George Clooney. It’s Frasier. It’s shows about Florida. It’s US medical dramas and American music and fine French dining and it’s insane!
I know the doylist explanation is “Joe fisher is an American living in a major cultural center and also is probably Not That Focused on the implications of American cultural dominance when he’s busy writing the Theoretical Physics Show” and that he probably just needed a reason for the aliens to all speak English. But the in-universe implications drive me crazy! What do you mean English becomes an intergalactic second language! It’s implied that they were broadcasting earth shows before the internet really took off, so why did English become the main focus? What was the common language before the teds started streaming earth shows? And if you go with the idea that the teds chose to focus on one language above the rest, why English? I’m guessing they started streaming earth shows between the 50s and 70s, and while there was a massive push towards western culture in that time, why the US specifically? There were so many major players on the field at the time!
“Earth has cultural dominance in the triad” no the United States has cultural dominance and that’s batshit crazy! It’s not even the whole planet they just really like one country’s media!!!

god. worlds beyond number makes such a brilliant case for actual play’s potential as a legitimate form of devised theatre. i think we’ve started (and by started I mean for the past few years) seeing this shift from the majority of actual play shows being actual play as a form of let’s play with storytelling elements to actual play as a form of devised storytelling using ttrpg mechanics as a functional framework. it’s interesting to see the result when many of the hallmarks of gameplay-focused actual play (above table banter, table visuals, battle sets, focus on mechanical character builds) are taken out of the equation or minimized and supplemented with more theatrical elements (full sound design, unique orchestrations, shorter episodes, less ooc discussion). this is not to say that other forms of actual play aren’t “legitimate” forms of storytelling, but i think worlds beyond number—or at least WWW—is very clear in its intention to be specifically theatrical in its storytelling and that changes its relationship both actual play and audio drama as mediums in a way I need to sit down and actually try to qualify. I don’t really have a point here (although I maybe would have one were I not writing this under my desk at work), but I’m just very appreciative of what they’re trying to do and I’m excited for people to continue to push actual play as a method for story and specifically as a method for devised theatre

[Image ID: Two text post memes from Worlds Beyond Number. The first shows Suvi's arc 3 art of her dressed in dark blue robes, sitting on the desk in the captain's quarters of the Meridian and spilling a vial of red potion. Steel is visible in the speaking mirror behind her. On it are two text posts from @aropride that read, "i don't 'have ptsd' that's all just the wizard's curse. the wizard is my mother but that's not relevant." The second image shows Ame wearing red and white clothes inspired by Japanese shrine maiden dress. The fox is next to her, and on either side of her are silhouettes of Suvi, Eursulon, and Mr. Soup. The silhouette of the Citadel looms behind them. On it is the same text post but edited to read, "i don't 'have ptsd' that's all just the wizard's curse. the wizard is my friend's mother but that's not relevant." end ID]

Putting "Ghibli-inspired" on a high shelf until the people talking about it as if it means "generic coziness and nothing else" have watched more Ghibli movies
Worlds beyond number’s “The Wizard The Witch and The Wild One” subverts this and is perfect in every way. We love the terrors and horrors
The strongest guy in the Magnus Archives is that one guy who was so obsessed with his dog that he just walked right out of the Spiral because it was her dinnertime
This is one of my favorite episodes. Fears can't hurt you if you're chill enough. The guy who walked in a spiral for four hours and then just left because he remembered he had somewhere to be is, to me, the avatar of the entities' fear
strongest people in the magnus archives:
guy who kept the coffin of the buried in his living room and used it as a coffee table
walked out of the spiral because his dog needed dinner
the plumber who was so inattentive that the stranger put on a whole spectacle for him and he straight-up missed it all
the guy whose primary concern with the evil taxidermists was whether or not they were money laundering (they weren't)
AND he didn’t even realize evil taxidermy was at play for the longest time because he came in like “I love and respect autistic people, of course I’m not judging eye contact”
we CANNOT forget the woman that was actively being swallowed by the buried and when there was nothing she could possibly do she lied down on the ground and accepted her fate so thoroughly and with such calm that it had to barf her back up.

In other news, this is the worst year for US rabies deaths in years. One factor is anti-vaxxers refusing the rabies vaccine, not just for themselves, but for their pets.
Because they're afraid it will give their dogs autism
Every time this comes around I like to chime in with my FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCE of getting rabies shots because he media has made them sounds terrifying and super painful and stuff and I'm worried people will avoid getting treated because of that.
TL;DR, it's NOT THAT BAD. Please for the love of *fuck* if you even think you maybe might have encountered a rabid animal, go get the fucking prophylactic.
Because that's the first thing - there's is not a rabies vaccine for humans. There's a pre-exposure prophylactic and a post-exposure prophylactic, and you'd be getting the post-exposure prophylactic. That means the SOONER YOU DO THAT the BETTER IT WILL WORK. This is NOT like the flu where if you get the shot after you've been exposed to the flu it's not gonna help. Totally different thing.
Second, the media likes to show that these shots have to be given in the stomach which I think used to be a thing but is NOT A THING ANYMORE. Your first shot will be straight into the bite wound, wherever that happens to be (mine was my ankle right on a bone which was pretty painful but honestly not that much worse than the bite? So like, it hurt sure but it hurt *already* so I don't know how much of that was the shot. If they can't give you all the shot there, you get the rest somewhere else – my bony ankle could only absorb so much so the rest went in my thigh (not painful at all). I assume it's thigh meat or arm meat depending on where the bite is.
After that you have to get boosters over the next few weeks. I think there were 3 or 4 of those and other than the weird part of "having to be administered in an ER" they were basically the same as flu shots. Upper arm, just felt like a regular shot. Nothing bad. If anything it wasn't as bad as a flu shot, because my arm didn't even hurt the rest of the day like when I get flu shots.
Additionally, my insurance did not fight with me on this AT ALL. I assume that's pretty standard, some things you DO NOT fuck around with on waiting periods and pre-auths and whateverthefuck and rabies is one. Also that "has to be administered in a ER" thing did *not* mean I had to pay an ER visit fee every time. I had an appointment, and that appointment just happened to be in the ER.
So please please please please please for the love of whatever you hold dear, get the damn shots. If you get them and didn't need them, awesome! If you don't get them and do need them, you are going to die, and it's going to suck the whole time. Two people have survived rabies in the history of people and they got so unreasonably lucky. Do not count on being rabies georg. You. WILL. DIE.
Get the fucking shots.
i love it here
