Orochimaru: trauma, tears, and toughness

I want to list some of the times Orochimaru got hurt. Let's find out how he dealt with it.

When Konan offered him the flower, he stood in the rain too. In a different post I argued that he thought killing Konan was more merciful than taking care of her.

Manga Orochimaru is emotional (trembling, stalling, teary wet eyes) before killing Hiruzen. Water is represented differently here: he's wearing the colours of the MIZUKAGE (Land of the Water), despite impersonating the Kazekage (Land of the Wind). His tear even gets a PLIP sound effect.

The anime fully removed the tears, and added the tongue for creepiness. This led to a conflict in fan reactions. Anime-only fans only ever saw Orochimaru as one-dimensional creepy villain. Whereas readers of the manga had been teased with character depth. Those fans remained hungry for information about Orochimaru's motivation and backstory.

This is Orochimaru in the shower, after the Third Hokage died, and Orochimaru lost use of his arms. Here, chance at ever again using ninjutsu seemed to have vanished. One person could argue he grieves his arms, another person could argue he grieves his dead sensei, and I argue that it's both.

Orochimaru is a tough person: layered and hardy.

Okay y'all remember the "For You" ed right? The one that shows the Sannin and Team 7 as little kids?

Noticed something really interesting: the following shots depict the six of them experiencing worst/hardest times in their lives

Most of these are to be expected as we're familiar with the way these things have impacted their lives and characters. Orochimaru lost their parents, Tsunade lost her brother, Sasuke survived a massacre, him leaving hurt Sakura, and Naruto was ostracized by the village.

The one that I didn't initially understand was Jiraiya's -

It took me a moment to realize what this scene of him sitting in the forest is referencing:

This is the moment he lost Orochimaru. Orochimaru leaving was Jiraiya's worst moment.

We see a lot of Jiraiya and Tsunade and know full well how much he cares about her! But his dynamic with Orochimaru isn't given as much focus so I really appreciate these little moments that show much he also loved Orochimaru.

Not to be an Orochimaru apologist but the demonization of Orochimaru by the narrative/Konoha is just a way for them to erase the fact that Orochimaru was a victim of the state. Yes he experimented on children, but it never was bc he had “darkness in him even as a child” or bc he was a “born psychopath” or whatever other ableist bs. Orochimaru is a product of Konoha’s cruel war machine. They sent his parents to their deaths, left him an orphan with no psychological support, used him as a child soldier, sent him to war where he witnessed countless atrocities that shaped him to become the cruel, apathetic man we know now. He then had to watch his friend Tsunade mourn the deaths of her 12 YEARS OLD brother and her boyfriend. His disgust and fear of death literally come from the second handed trauma of seeing Tsunade cry over the mutilated body of her baby brother. It’s canon. Is he a cruel megalomaniac who grooms and tortures children? yes. Is he responsible for his actions? yes. But Konoha is responsible as well. They made him a monster, then they turned around and acted like he just woke up one day as a creepy crazy snake man, when it’s literally the result of decades of severe trauma and brainwashing.

How do you expect a mentally unstable child thrown in a battlefield to react? Did they think he was going to grow up to be a nanny? He was taught to torture and kill. Why are they so upset about it? They have a Torture Department that operates in BROAD DAYLIGHT in Konoha. A good chunk of the beloved Yamanaka clan works there. Danzo kidnapped, groomed, brainwashed and experimented on countless children, but bc it’s for the village, it’s okay. Orochimaru is only evil because he hurts people for his OWN gain. That’s why they’re now fine with him in Boruto even though he still experiments on people. Now it benefits Konoha, so the fake morals they dredged up against him previously just vanish.
