Zoos, even those that have research and conservation in their mission statement, exploit animals for entertainment. I'm saying this as someone who loved zoos as a child and who worked at a zoo library (specifically working on research related to injuries and deaths of zoo staff and visitors who came into contact with animals). Most of us see non-human animals as less important than human animals. We believe (for different reasons) that animals are here for us to use however we see fit - including for food, to perform, protect our homes, carry us or our stuff, keep us from being lonely, or to live in enclosures for us to observe. Let's be just a little less selfish with the other animals with whom we share this planet. #abolishzoos
