October 15, 2025 - Protests continue in Peru following the ousting of US-backed president Dina Boluarte as she had a near 100% disapproval rate. Congress removed her and appointed José Jerí as interim president "We are marching because there is a corrupt and criminal system ... the government is the criminal and we want absolutely everyone to go."

Jerí, who has faced allegations of corruption and sexual abuse, is Peru's eighth president in a decade. Police shot and killed a protester in the street during the protest the night before, so protests are expected to escalate. [video]

God the notes in this one irritate me. So many people are missing the point by saying the concept of race is stupid and that they don't understand why people believe in it.

Race exists because it has a purpose; reproducing the structure of exploitation that makes capitalism work. It is real insofar as it definitely affects people and one can be said to be of a certain race because of the circumstances of their life and birth and the way they are perceived by society.

One thing we don't talk about enough in the way the internet looks on protests outside are the "soft" benefits of protest. Namely, that the protest serves the community of protesters to continue their sense of political agency and efficacy. Overcoming political apathy and senses that people can't make a difference is a massive hurdle to overcome, if you keep actions up and going, you can keep pressure and visibility up to your opposition, but you're also helping motivate the people doing the organizing and showing up, helping them feel like they're making a difference, which helps them show up to the next thing, and then the next thing, amd helps people become more likely to move from symbolic action to direct action; but coalitions and communities don't just appear out of the ether--they are cultivated through consistent and intentional effort.

But to move people up the ladder of engagement, from generally observing to following, endorsing (single time action), to contributing (repeat action), etc. organizers have to overcome significant hurdles; namely, the inertia of the political moment, apathy, senses of political powerlessness, etc. Symbolic protests can serve ways of generating that participation, interest, and renewing the affective resources movements need to build solidarity.

Symbolic action is not enough, but it has its purposes. Both in its ability to reframe narratives, increase visibility, and keep up the threat of political pressure, but also as a vehicle of coalition building, overcoming our affective barriers, and restoring the affective resources we need to continue organizing. By ignoring the soft goals of symbolic action, I worry our collective attention is too narrowly applied to direct results in such a way that feeds our own barriers for action and absolves us of the responsibility to act, organize, and be in solidarity with each other. We should hold organizers to account, while also being conscious of efforts to organize movements and build momentum.
