Project 2 - Rationale
For Project 2, I chose a scene from Friends, when Joey was on the game show Pyramid and giving out hilarious answers. The concept was to visualize the dialog in a game show format.
Through visual research, I found that typical TV game show environment conveyed a sleek, modern and exciting vibe using neon glow colours and sans-serif typefaces. These elements were borrowed in order to create the same mood and tone for my resulting video.
The dialog between Joey and his teammate, Gene, were presented in a “Questions and Answers” format, split into two screens. Similar to game shows, where a digital screen displays the question for contestants to read. Both dialogs are present at the same time to remind the viewer what question Joey was answering to.
One of the challenges I encountered was how to make the video more dynamic than just a static split screen with changing texts. I ended up combining scale and the spherize effect in order to make the dialog “pop” with the voiceover.
Another challenge was to incorporate the answer to Gene’s questions on the screen, without distracting Joey’s speech. My solution was the have the answer in the background using the screen effect. It is not distracting to the main text but visible enough for the audience to notice it.
Looking back, I wish I had a better solution to some of the animations. For example, a method to better incorporate the background audience laughter that’s present throughout the clip. Nonetheless, I am satisfied with the overall outcome.
Despite listening to this track for the thousandth time, Joey’s funny answers made it bearable :)
