📣📣 5 DAYS LEFT TO SUBMIT A PITCH! For the next few days, we’ll be spotlighting our organizers, starting with Cynthia! 📣📣
Co-organizer Cynthia Cheng @yuan-mi is a Taiwanese American illustrator based in Oakland, CA. You can find her working on Doodles in Google’s San Francisco office during the day and on the hunt for tasty Chinatown treats after work. In her personal work, she enjoys creating illustrations and comics based on identity and relationships. Find her work here: www.cynthiaycheng.com
When working on an illustration series on AAPI issues, Cynthia (@yuan-mi) was surprised to learn how the history of Spam in AAPI food has ties to US occupation. This story became one of the inspirations for our zine. Read the article that this illustration was based on at Hyphen Magazine.
Hi everyone! We are so flattered and pleasantly surprised by the volume of responses we’ve received so far! It seems like there’s quite a few questions about our zine and we’d like to clarify what we’re looking for in our pitches and final illustrations.
1. We are looking for illustration pitches! Though we value comics artists and writers, since we’re self-funded we unfortunately don’t have room in our budget at the moment. At the moment, the organizers will be taking on the task of writing but we are looking into grants and other funding opportunities in hopes that we can accept more artists and open up the project to writers interested in contributing.
2. We apologize for any confusion with our wording– we used the language “Asian dishes” but want to clarify that we welcome any dish relevant to the experience of folks of Asian / Pacific Islander descent. We are also open to people outside the US!
3. When reviewing pitches, we will consider how the food reflects the adaptation of AAPI communities throughout history. How does this particular food reflect a change that the community has undergone? This can include class-related struggle, impacts of imperialism or colonialism, or change in perceptions. Please take these questions into consideration when submitting your pitch. (If you have already submitted your pitch, feel free to email us if you want to make any changes.)
4. We are looking for illustrations that portray/visualize the food and its connected history, rather than just an illustration of the food.
Heads-up for those interesting in pitching for the Family Style zine! If you shared the original call for pitches, we'd appreciate a boost for our clarifications also!
📣 CALL FOR PITCHES 📣
“Family Style: An AAPI Food Anthology” is an illustration anthology publication by Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) creators to share the lesser-known histories behind Asian foods.
We’re looking for AAPI folks to send us their pitches! Please take a look at our about page for information on the project, timeline, pitch guidelines, and more.
I'm organizing a zine with my dear friend Farrah! Any reblogs to spread the word are much appreciated 😊💕
