Wake up. Stretch high up to the sky. There's nowhere to go but up.
I just saw your post with selfies at York and I wanted to know more about the PKIN courses. I'm going into my 4th year and never knew they existed. So all these courses are free and won't effect my gpa?
Hi! Here's a link with a bit more info about PKINS http://kine.info.yorku.ca/courses/
What I did for my PKINS is asked for the pass/fail option. No matter what PKINS don't affect your GPA but grade will appear on your transcript. I can't seem to find the information about what letter grade is a pass, I believe it's C+ but you can ask your teacher on the first day when they give you the outline. Your grade is also dependent on attendance, usually it's at least 80% of the classes to pass.
Hope this helps :)
YorkU in Photos ... AKA Selfies at YorkU
This week's blog theme is photos of YorkU. Since I'm not so great of a photographer like some of my awesome coworkers I figured I'd do selfies. I present to you Selfies at YorkU:
Last year's Terry Fox run, loved the route through Black Creek trail.
Rage Dodgeball anyone? Aka we dodged alllllll niiiiiiight. This was the RED Zone team plus a few extra Vanier additions. Want to sign up? It happens usually in October. Join IMLeagues to stay up to date with Intramurals.
Student life = study life. This selfie is in Scott Library bust I must admit I'm partial to Steacie and Bronfman for ultimate study spots.
This is in the yoga studio in Tait. Did you know that non Kinesiology students can take PKins? What's a Pkin? It's a "how to" on some form of physical activity, a mandatory series of credits for Kine students. But guess what - it's FREE (it's 0 credits by the way) for all students.
Uh oh ... caught selfie-ing at Fall Campus Day.
One of my fav places to workout - the Toronto Track and Field Centre. If you're a full time student you can register for a membership at the TTFC for free. Bring your schedule and your student card and give yourself a few extra minutes on your first visit.
Look at me and a big X! This was part of tabling in Vari Hall that YFS was doing to inform students about the most recent Ontario Election. Remember, voting is important, especially at the provincial level because the government plays a huge role in tuition prices. Check out all the AWESOME services the YFS offers on their website.
This was last month at the YorkU Opening Ceremonies for Pride. This event was hosted by the YFS and TBLGAY.
One last selfie from a few weeks ago when I went for a lunch time walk. This is at the Stong Pond. So beautiful ... but beware the geese!
We're Talking Commuting
My favourite way to commute is of course my bike. And YES I do have a goal to bike to YorkU at some point before I graduate. But for now, since it's such a long ride I happily take the subway and the good ol 196.
Luckily, if you are taking the TTC you can buy a discounted metro pass for $108. BUT FIRST you need a post secondary student ID card from the TTC.
You’re eligible for a post secondary student ID card if:
You are a full time student
and in a diploma, degree, or private college program (not certificate)
and attending school in Toronto
How to obtain your post secondary student ID card:
2014/15 cards start being issued the end of August
Go to Sherbourne subway station *OR* on campus (keep checking the link in the bottom of this post for the visit dates)
Bring exact cash for the TTC ID (price not posted yet usually around $7)
Bring your YU Card (YorkU ID) and a printed copy of your schedule with your name on it for both fall and winter semester
**FYI the end of August and beginning of September are really busy times for obtaining student IDs. I’ve waited in a line that snaked all up and down the stairs at Sherbourne station and it wasn’t pleasant. Plan ahead and go at an off peak time!
Visit the TTC website for more information about obtaining this discounted metro pass.
Food, Fitness, and Fireworks
I had an extra long weekend for Canada Day since I took Monday off from work. Me and my bf needed to recharge with a bit of relaxing and a bit of holiday weekend fun and a bit of chores. Because, ya know ... sometimes you need clean laundry.
The weather was awesome this weekend. Perfect for brunch on the patio at Lakeview Restaurant. Monika (former RED Zone lead) recommended this place and it was a really good breakfast and patio.
Even the little bit of rain was welcome at our house because we didn't have to do any watering in the garden. I have a vegetable garden with
kale
hot peppers
tomatoes
cucumbers
bush beans
We strung up the tomato plants because from the rain and the heat they are getting huge and then did a bunch of weeding.
Then we finished up the weekend (well at this point it was Tuesday) with a Canada Day trifecta of going to the gym, awesome BBQ, and some fireworks.
Back to work today and we have SO MUCH awesome orientation stuff being planned at SCLD. Can't wait to keep you guys updated on it more :)
My Favourite Social Media Platform Featuring My Most Popular Posts
Picking my favourite social media platform is so hard you guys. But okay I'll do it :)
J'aime L'Instagram (not a french major, how'd I do?)
I'm going to share a few of my most popular (most liked) photos on Instagram because they all tell a story about me. A picture says a thousand words!
Image 1: you know those cheesy image quote thingys on Pinterest? I like to make my own! For starters it's always better to do your own art work than use someone else's. Usually when I make these images it's a quote or self affirmation that I need to hear myself and I realize that there's probably someone else that could use the positivity too.
Image 2: Breakfast on my 29th birthday, yes that's how old I am right now! And yes I'll still be a student on my 30th birthday. I got a lot of likes on it because ya know, the internet can be friendly and everyone wanted to wish me a happy birthday. But I was so smitten with myself for making this Breaking Bad friendly Instagram post. It was a few days before the finale. Please tell me you get it?!?!?1 (Not many people "got it" when I posted it)
Image 3: Throwback Thursday comin' at ya! I can't remember exactly how old I was in this picture but please note the dark lipliner and frosty lipstick, hello 90s. When I was younger my life revolved around my softball team. In my 20s it kind of fell away as other things popped up. But at York, playing softball intramurals was one of the first "traditional" student thing I signed up for. It was my introduction to intramurals and student engagement which although a bit hard to navigate the sign up process at times CAN be mature student friendly. Thanks Bethune and Vanier Athletics Associations :)
Image 4: No summer is safe from my apparent compulsion for learning! Last summer I decided not to take classes since I had a full time job at the RED Zone. I decided to take the break to prepare for my personal training exam (I had already done the classes during the February reading week). I passed on the first try and am working on building my personal training business Wildly Fit.
Image 5: The freshman 15 lbs isn't just for direct entry students, mature students can have the same problem. I put on 25 lbs in the first year of leaving my job and coming back to school. Unhealthy habits like eating too much junk food, eating late at night, not getting enough sleep, not managing my stress, and skipping workouts were to blame for my weight gain. Eventually I realized that regardless of my weight, those habits were not doing me any favours physically, emotionally, or for my academic success. It took a year to slowly change habits and this picture depicts a 12 lbs weight loss where I comfortably sit today.
Image 6: I'm pretty sure this picture is my most liked EVER. Obviously. It's a chipmunk in a chipmunk mug. We were at a friends cottage and a few of my pals worked tirelessly with coaxing and peanuts to make this happen.

Meet My SCLD Partners in Crime
In my new role with the Media and Communications team I have been assigned as a liaison to another SCLD unit to help them get digital. This liaison role is kind of split up into two parts for me. I'll be helping with orientation over the summer and am also assigned to the Clubs team. Allow me to introduce you.
Orientation
Orientation at York University is part of a whole BUNCH of different departments. First year transition is a big part of what we focus on as a University community. That all gets tied nicely together in a bow at SCLD (or at least we try to wrangle it all in). There's three types of orientation: Family Orientation, Academic Orientation (also known as Making Connections), and Social Orientation (sometimes referred to as Frosh Week). Myself and Nikki will be producing a Orientation Blogging Series on the SCLD blog so all those incoming first years can stay in the loop about what's up and coming for Orientation and the beginning of the school year.
Meet the Orientation Peers:
David - YODA Chair
Nahom - Training and Assessment Coordinator
Clubs
Did you know that there are over 300 student clubs and organizations at York? If you want to find out about them get on over to YUConnect. Once you're signed in you can click on the top tab that says Organizations. Then you can use the left sidebar to search for cool clubs :)
Meet Despina, the Clubs Peer Mentor
And although I'm not officially working on Mature Student Orientation I will definitely be sharing details on this blog as well. In fact, you can already register for Mature Student Orientation if you're starting in September.

5 Outdoor Spots to Enjoy Summertime at YorkU
It was a long winter wasn't it? Now that the good weather and sunshine is finally here let me encourage you to get outside more! I love heading outdoors during my lunch hour. YorkU is a pretty beautiful place and summer is my favourite time on campus. I've been here every summer for the last four years (either doing summer school or working on campus) and I've compiled a list of the best places to catch some rays.
Stong Pond
Ducks on campus. Cuteness alert!!! I love going for a walk by the pond and just watching the reflection in the water or checking out some cute wild life.
Schulich Courtyard
Grab an iced coffee and Timothy's and bask in the rays. If it's a windy day this is for sure the best place to be because it's enclosed. No wind, lots of sun, is there anything better?
Shopsy's Patio
Obviously this is a new one since Shopsy's just opened this year. This is a good one for lunch or get your classmates or summer coworkers together to grab a drink or dinner :) Yay for friends and team bonding.
The commons outside Vari Hall
Okay this might be super obvious but this has always been one of my favourite places. In 1st and 2nd year when I was on campus for long days doing full time classes, the commons was my saviour. It allowed me to get some tan and you may have even found me napping some days (most days!)
Passy Field
I just got to know Passy Field last year when the Bethune Slo Pitch team graciously adopted me as their first baseman. Unfortunately due to a tricep injury I haven't made it out to a game yet this year. But I hope to get back on the field very soon!!!
Here's a few pictures from last year:

Enrolling in Fall/Winter Classes - Mature Student Advice
Time to enrol in Fall/Winter classes everyone. If you're going into your last year then you've probably got a date any day now, like me! Because I'm a mature student, I've got some specific considerations that I have to think about.
Here are some things to think about when making your schedule for next year:
Courses offered in the evening or on weekends
The YorkU page to search for courses now has the ability to choose to look at classes that are offered at 6pm or later. If you work a job during the day you may prefer these classes.
Consider this: if you're a morning person you may have a hard time concentrating in lectures at this time of night.
Online classes
Technology is advancing my friends and many online classes have lecture videos to watch from the comfort of you own house, or wherever you do your course work. Convenience is good!
Consider this: online classes take a lot of discipline. If taking you may want to carve out a block of time that is the same every week for this particular class. Otherwise it's easy to fall off schedule.
Group Work
There is a lot of group work in my program so I balance my schedule to make sure that not all of my courses in a semester have group work. It's great for meeting people and gaining a network of contacts in your program. Because let's face it, it's not always as easy to meet people when you're a mature student.
Consider this: your schedule demands are likely different than a direct entry student. They may want to meet on weekends or other times when you have family commitments.
Good luck choosing! And remember, if you can't get into a course you want right now, keep trying. Spaces could open up at any time so if you check often you'll probably get your timetable sorted out just the way you want.
