Mizuki: What Gave Me Courage, Part 1
This is a side story for: And Now I Wear This Ribbon. Mizuki's mom is mailing Yuuki some things, and Mizuki wants to add on something herself but isn't sure what. Mizuki realizes that her own happiness itself is the ideal present.
Mizuki reflects on when her sister called her the night before. We see in a flashback Mizuki getting caught off guard, being asked how she's been lately. This is her usual reaction to things being made about herself, but then, she smiles; she has been doing well. With anyone else, this would be when Mizuki would start taking evasive action and either lying or changing the subject, but she trusts her sister implicitly and tells her she's been having fun.
The event story had showed us a lot of Mizuki trying to put on a brave face for her sister not to worry her, since they both knew how Yuuki leaving would affect Mizuki, and Mizuki realizes that even though she herself was really telling Yuuki the truth during the call last night, her sister might not actually know that.
Mizuki had taken the leap of faith trusting people again with joining N25 because she wanted to try one more time for her sister, and since then she's found everything she wanted. She found people who understand her (even as she still fights tooth and nail for them not to find out about her), and she's found a place where she wants to be, something that she wants to do. Her sister was right about there still being kindness to find, and Mizuki was right to try again.
Mizuki's been on many eventful stories to share since her sister left for France. She's fully embraced her cute style again and has found ways to have fun that actually involve other people, even outside her group. But Mizuki and her sister both know how good she is at looking like -- and even trying to believe -- she's having fun, that she wonders if her sister would wonder about that.
She narrows down the photo pool to ones where she's clearly and genuinely happy, and when she looks over the set one more time, she realizes that, wow, she has been happy. She has been making memories. It's something her sister doesn't know about just yet, but also something that snuck up on Mizuki, too.
The photos are already enough to share with Yuuki how Mizuki has really and truly been enjoying life. But now, Mizuki herself is moved and wants to write a letter thanking her.
