I’ve seen a lot of criticism about the way people portray Edd’s character as some people tend to make him too “nice” and “flawless,” which drives me nuts, but at least there is some merit there. He is actually nice.
What I need to talk about is the trend I’m seeing lately with Eddy, because that is what’s really getting at me. People are either going one of two ways: Eddy is a horrible, mean, selfish jerk who makes Edd and Ed’s lives miserable, or he is the kindest, sweetest cinnamon roll and the “selfish guy” thing was all an act because of his brother.
NEITHER of these things are Eddy. Eddy is a complicated character. He does not fall on either end of the moral spectrum. He is NOT nice, and he is interminably selfish and narcissistic, but this does NOT make him a bad person either. When it’s important, he steps up for the people he cares about, but he is never, ever going to be unselfish. That is so deeply ingrained in his character, and that’s ok! It’s what we love about him. He was attacked all throughout his childhood, so he developed a need for self preservation. That is normal and selfish people can be good people.
But on the same note, please don’t go overboard with this! He is not the greedy misanthrope he seems to be on the surface, and I can’t believe there are still people that think this way in this, the year 2018. He is an abuse victim - A SEVERE abuse victim - But he loves and cares about other people. I could go on and on about this, but his personality has done nothing but HELP Ed and Edd, and if someone watching the show can’t see that they are watching the wrong show.
Here is the driving force behind all of Eddy’s actions that needs to be at the forefront of any portrayal of him: Insecurity. Not greed, not selfishness, and certainly not kindness (I’m not even sure where that came from), but insecurity. Whenever he is acting particularly greedy or sad or selfish, it’s always because of the crippling insecurity instilled in him from years of abuse. When he’s showing weakness or vulnerability or trying to do nice, sweet things for Ed, Edd or whomever, there’s a level of insecurity behind it that he isn’t good enough for them and needs to prove himself. Not that his kind gestures are selfishly motivated, he does things out of selflessness sometimes, but this is just a general rule to help really inform his decision making when you’re unsure if he would do something.
In short, Eddy is a good-but-selfish person with a boat-load of flaws, he’s extremely funny and often self-deprecating, and it’s going to take him years to get over the personality instilled in him by his brother. He is not going to be Mother Theresa the day the kids come back from Theme Park in BPS.
Am I an authority on the Eds? No! I’m just a huge fan, and maybe I have no idea what I’m talking about and I’m spreading horrible lies! All I know is that I love this Eddy, and I want to see more of this Eddy! Thank you for your time.
