Character Sheet: Cereus Yue

Cereus Yue! I think I simplified her the most. She had too many accessories..

While she was written to balance and complement the quartet, Cereus would eventually have more to her than meets the eye. I hope to explore the merchant or commerce side of Penglai through Cereus' eyes... I pray that I can do her and her backstory justice, too!

For Cereus, I wanted to lean more on the religious and spiritual aspects of Taoism and Buddhism, the Taiwanese opera and its performing arts scene, but not before dabbling a bit into Dunhuang dances.

Character Sheet: Jin Zhiwu

Oh, look, @acuteparry's OC, Jin! Fun fact, this was acuteparry's sona first and foremost for Nine Sol streams originally. So if anything, I based Jin's personality on acuteparry's mannerisms, like being the straightman between the two of us for this AU. I like to think that Jin has to be the one who reels everybody back, so I guess you can say he's the Ultimate Id of the quartet (what is this, danganronpa-)

But what does Jin's creator have to say about his design? Here's what I got! (cont.)

Dice: Anything to say about Jin? AP: I didn't really think about him too hard before that

I mean, to think about the version of him before that though, I guess I wanted a simple sort of design for him to reflect the sort of placement I was in the event, the focus of simplicity and being sort of middle of the pack

He's not well-known, or overly flashy, but that sort of blandness makes him a consistent figure that blends to the background while still doing important work that supports those around him

Hence the dark colours and such

You can also say that the bright blue eyes are like cybernectic implants that help him see but also record, it's the only flashy thing about him

The idea of blending into the background but listening and recording, for any information to share

That's why he ended up being a part of the journal

Character Sheet: Jun Song

Oh hey, it’s Jun, Haoyu’s right-hand man!

Jun is actually closer to how I write characters, usually. The snarky, energetic type. It’s embarrassing to admit, but he’s also based on different facets of people I know in real life too!

My decision for him to be an engineer is actually a result of that. Well, sort of.

Since Nine Sols is based on Ancient China, Taoism, and Taiwanese culture, it felt only right to do some research and pay tribute to some of those aspects – especially the latter. In Taiwan, most people graduate to become engineers (in fact, it’s one of the popular majors in the country there, because of their high-tech manufacturing industry being their main speciality.)

I wonder if that’s why Nine Sols went on that TaoPunk direction… hmm...

Character Sheet: Haoyu Mai

Our main protagonist everybody!

Haoyu is actually my second official OC. I tend to struggle adoring a piece of media strong enough to create characters fleshed out with lives and backgrounds of their own, so this is actually a very big moment for me. I can't wait to show you glimpses into his character soon!

Anyways, I wanted to create a Solarian OC who didn’t look conventionally attractive and lived a simple, carefree life. In fact, his personality and close bonds with friends is loosely based on a friend IRL, who'd tell me stories of their lives and days spent with friends whenever we can catch up during the year. Thinking about it now, his design might even be influenced by Old Chang, LOL ← Dice not beating the “Old Chang is my favourite character allegations”.

Hello everyone! The comic hasn't been abandoned, I just needed a break and prep for Chapter 2. You know what that means? That means I've made ACTUAL PROPER character sheets for everybody, HURRAYYYYYYYYY!! I know some peeps have seen it, but I'll be reposting it here - where it truly belongs. (I also need to... *reads notes* do a timelapse for somebody soon, but I'm pretty sure I'll just edit a video demonstrating what I do illustrating the comics...) Anyways, I'll be posting the character sheets and expression sheets throughout the week as I work on the pages in a couple days, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
