What is Persephone and the Vampires?!
Persephone and The Vampires is a modern goth band that blends the genres of death rock, ethereal wave, and dark wave into a single unique and original sound. The band, also known as PVP, was formed in 2017 by two students from an art school in England, Claire F. Sakurai and Bradley Vincent, better known as Persephone and Vlad, the vocalist and the drummer (and backvocal) of the band; they are both also the composers and are credited on all the songs. The band's first album, "Your Fallen Angel," was entirely experimental, but it made many fans of gothic music fall in love with the band immediately. The band sparks curiosity with their victorian-inspired clothing and unmistakable charisma, appealing not only to goths but to anyone who appreciates a good band and good music.
The initial idea for the band came from Claire Sakurai.
Daughter of Atsushi Sakurai, the vocalist of the 80s Japanese v-kei band "BUCK-TICK", Claire is fascinated and influenced by the gothic subculture and everything about it since she was a child. A self-proclaimed fan of gothic literature and music, Claire dreamed of forming a band from a very young age, observing bands like "The Sisters of Mercy", "Bauhaus" and even her own father's band. Thus, she began composing songs at 15 years old — songs that are included on the band's current albums, such as "Wax Castle", "Dancing Shoes" and "Pierrout."
The name "Persephone and The Vampires," although inspired by the band "Siouxsie and The Banshees," also came from Vincent, from a story written by the composer, who is also a writer. The story also influenced the band's fictional lore and the concept of their albums and songs. The central idea is that Persephone (Claire) is, at the beginning, the only human among the four vampires: Vlad, Phantomina, Corvin, and WB — which are still performed today by the same five members of the band's original formation.
In the drastically dark and mysterious world of Persephone and the Vampires, it's almost always common to find references to gothic cinema and horror movies in general. Many music videos recreate the cinematography of films like "Edward Scissorhands", "Dracula (1931)", "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" and even the horror classic "The Shining." The band is theatrical, and this is reflected in their music videos and performances, especially in concerts. Claire is passionate about dance and expresses herself through it.
Also passionate about Edgar Allan Poe's poems, Claire draws inspiration from melancholic, unsettling, and distressing things for her musical compositions. Furthermore, she uses her creativity and perfectionism to create enigmatic and metaphorical lyrics to make her listeners delve deeper into the message of the band's songs. Bradley, on the other hand, is straightforward in his compositions, giving the band a musical and creative balance — which is reflected in the band's vocals too.
PVP fans are called "Moon Bats" because they are moon worshippers along with Persephone (their Mother Vamp) and The Vampires (in the lore) — once you delve into the band and the vampires, you're never the same again. your destiny is to become a moon bat vampire. 🦇
