hi I'm new to hockey sorry if this is a basic question but I saw an rpf post about the penguins game that said it was so buzzy of mack to go after wutherspoon bc he's the franchise player and there are others for that job
so I was wondering exactly how rare it is for a superstar player like macklin to go fight someone who hurt a teammate cause I've seen vids of players like him fighting but was it bc it was for a teammate that it was rare or ?

I mean, Mack's not the first franchise player to jump in & defend a teammate, but it's not something you see happen often. He still has yet to actually drop the gloves, and hopefully he can keep his temper in check enough not to. (But, knowing Mack, I'm pretty sure that'll happen at some point lol.)
Both Sid & Nate have dropped gloves a few times, and McDavid & Matthews will jump into scrums occasionally. Guys like them are definitely discouraged from getting too physical, though. You don't want your top player to break a finger or get an injury fighting. Teams try to insulate them by putting other guys on the team to do the fighting in their place (like Reavo), and sometimes just their presence on the team will keep players in check.
There's a reason Grier has been adding bigger & more physical guys to the team. Sherwood, Nurse, Trouba, Marchment, Orlov, all these guys can HIT. I expect Cherny to get more physical too, especially if he's on that top line with Will & Mack. (We've already seen him jump in to defend Mack and I don't expect that to change.)
There are two things that stand out to me about the Wotherspoon fight. One is that it was a clean hit. If it was dirty, I could totally understand Mack losing his temper & retaliating. But Mack knows the difference between a good hit & a bad one. Maybe he just didn't see it go down & only saw Eky shoving Wotherspoon & Will skating off to the bench. From where he was on the ice, though, that doesn't seem likely.
The second is that he abandoned the play. Like, he fully just gave up on the game at hand. I've literally never seen him do this in any other game, even when other teammates like Cherny got hurt. Mr. Macklin "Hockey Robot" Celebrini saw Will get hurt & forgot about hockey.
That, to me, is buzzy.
(Edited to add: I totally forgot Mack did this again in January after Will came back from injury! Abandoned the play after Will was checked hard into the boards. Here's the link.)
