“fujiwara…” fubuki frowned, putting a hand over yusuke’s own. “you shouldn’t think so lowly of yourself.” it hurt his heart that yusuke was like this. that he felt that he didn’t deserve to be saved. “it’s more than that, you know. not just a bit. i…i care about you a lot. you’re one of my best friends. you and ryo both.” of course there was more to that, but now wasn’t the time to get into such things.

“i want to be there for you now.” to make up for the past. “i want to help you realize you deserve this–that you deserve to be back. because you do.” he would stay with yusuke no matter what. he wouldn’t let anything happen to him again. “i won’t let you be alone again. i promise.”

he felt his resolve slip away when fubuki put his hand over his own. it was so easy to melt into fubuki’s touch. he was already doing as much by allowing himself to rest in fubuki’s lap like this. it was too late to go back now -- at least that was what he told himself to keep himself from running away. yusuke wanted this, he craved the intimacy so badly, but that was what made it even more terrifying. how quickly it could be torn away. how he was the last one to deserve such kindness. he made his amends, but he could never repay all the pain he’d caused so many people. he didn’t deserve the fluttering happiness in his chest when fubuki played with his hair and told him he wanted to be there for him.

“ back in our school days, i wasn’t going back for anyone. there was nothing anyone could have done, including you. i had made my decision. you’re too kind to try to shoulder the sins i’ve put onto my own shoulders. you don’t have to do a thing for me anymore. ” yusuke knew fubuki well enough to know the guilt he felt for something that wasn’t his fault at all. but in yusuke’s eyes, fubuki had done more than enough. fubuki and ryo were his closest friends, and what had yusuke given them other than nightmares and self-doubt? “ i want you to be happy. i don’t want to cause you any pain. yet, here i am, still spouting self-hatred as if nothing had happened -- i’m sorry. i don’t want to keep dragging you down. ”

fubuki played with yusuke's hair, smiling down at him. "i'm glad you're back. i missed you." even if he had forgotten about yusuke, in his heart, he knew something--someone--had been missing. "i... i wish i could've done more." i wish i had been able to save you. of course, he was grateful to jaden and johan, but apart of him couldn't help but feel envious, inferior. he hadn't been strong enough to save one of his best friends. "i'm sorry, fujiwara... i couldn't do anything for you."

yusuke smiled up at fubuki. he didn’t think he would ever hear such kind words from fubuki again. not after all he had done. not when he was certain he’d be lost in darkness forever – not when he was going to drag everyone with him. he had committed an unforgivable sin, and had come out unscathed. that was because of all the people who cared about him; fubuki going as far as to go into darkness with him.

“ that’s not true. you did more for me than i ever deserved. ” he moved a hand up to touch fubuki’s cheek, ignoring the way it made his hand shake. “ you have such a big heart, and to give even the tiniest bit of it to me … you’ve done way more than i could ever ask of you. ”

fubuki could tell when yusuke got lost in his head. he seemed to have a faraway look in his eyes. he didn't know what he was thinking, but he knew that he couldn't let it go on. to try to snap him out of it, he slung an arm over his friend's shoulder. "fujiwara! let's do something! it feels like we haven't hung out in forever!" in actuality, it had only been about a week, but that didn't stop fubuki from exaggerating.

it was easy for yusuke to get lost in his own thoughts. it was easy to get buried so far that not even honest could snap him out of it. however, fubuki always forced his way in, shoving the thoughts away temporarily -- something that yusuke wasn’t sure was a good or bad thing.

“ it hasn’t been that long. ” in fact, since yusuke’s return, they spent a lot more time with each other -- or, any amount of time seemed like a long time compared to being alone in darkness for five years. despite his retort, yusuke gave a small smile. “ is there something you had in mind? ”
