「 first date night 」

Despite the fact that he leaves his daughter every time he goes to work and all yet he could not help but fill tremendously guilty at that moment. Although he and Jiae had agreed to come home relatively early and make sure they were around the vicinity near their home, Minhyuk did not feel all that comfortable leaving the baby to a babysitter on new years eve nonetheless. It almost makes him want to reconsider their plans.  

A selfish part of him wins, however, because this would be the first time he was taking the woman he loved for as long as he could remember on a proper date. After the festival day, Minhyuk felt as though he was walking on cloud nine and to think, Jiae was to one who made the first move. Something Minhyuk wishes he had the courage to do all this time. 

No point dreading the past, “Jiae-ah, I’m ready.” Allowing his girlfriend (”fiance”) to know his status as he sneaks into their daughter’s room to kiss her goodnight. Whispering a quick ‘I love you and papa promises we’ll be home soon princess’, Minhyuk is definitely feeling some separation anxiety at that moment. Even though he knows that would subside the second he sees Jiae.

･ﾟ✧  𝒋𝒊𝒂𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍  any better about this than minhyuk does.  it’s the first time that she’s leaving nabi home with a sitter and it’s making her relatively anxious, even though they haven’t left and she’s still waiting on minhyuk to finish getting ready before they go.  she knows, though, that eventually she’s going to have to get used to this  -  leaving nabi under the care of someone else, like when she goes to school or starts to grow up and gain friends of her own.  still, because it’s the first time, she can’t help but feel a little jittery.

it’s new years eve though, and minhyuk insisted that they go out for a date for the first time  -  for real.  just the two of them.  if they’re to build a future together, they need to settle the foundations first, so jiae eventually agrees in spite of her misgivings.  even when she finally agreed though, she’s sure she asked more than once if it’d really be okay to leave their baby with a sitter or why she couldn’t come with.

jiae stiffens when she’s pulled from her thoughts by minhyuk’s voice, shuffling over to nabi’s nursery to watch him kiss the sleeping baby goodbye.  her hands twist anxiously but she can’t help but smile  -  he’s such a good father.  he’ll be a better boyfriend  -  a better future husband.  she knows it just by the way he treats nabi.  “ shall we go, then? you already planned everything, right ..?”

Minhyuk has been in love with Jiae from the first time they met. They were children back then so he must have thought his fondness for her was merely that of a friend. Yet even then she drove something fierce and protective from within him. Even as a young boy he acted accordingly. Always there protecting her from bullies and making sure she stayed the princess as she is meant to be. Him her knight. At least that was their roles as they played about back then.

He couldn’t imagine that till this day he would still be acting as her protector. Gladly so. He still loves her, more so then ever. Gone was the childish wonder about the pretty girl. Replaced by admiration and adoration to the woman who is the mother to his child- in all but blood. It was strange really, he knew some of his peers always said they loved their children because the child has a piece of them. But Minhyuk loves Nabi more so because she is Jiae’s daughter. 

Every day whenever he held her close to him, as each second passes by he couldn’t help but love her more and more. For that moment he wonders if he could ever love another human this great. But then Jiae would come around the corner and he’ll find the answer in her. Every glance, he tells himself that this is his chance to tell Jiae how he feels. 

But Minhyuk is a coward. He doesn’t want to lose her and Nabi. His family who he is utterly devoted to. He would rather play pretend and be the pillar of support in any way they would have him. 

He had just put Nabi down for her sleep, craning his neck to the side as he tries to work out the kinks from the day. As always, he greets Jiae with a warm smile, a brow-raising intrigued by her nervous behaviour. “Of course you can,” his smile growing into a full-blown grin as he leans forward his elbows meeting his knees. “… although, you know you didn’t have to get me anything right?” Minhyuk spoke kindly and truthfully. After all, as far as he is concerned he has everything he wants. 

･ﾟ✧  𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓  on her face as she sits across from minhyuk  -  he looks so eager and curious that jiae’s afraid of disappointing him or scaring him off with this proposal.  she wants nothing more than to protect him though, even if it breaks her heart in the process.  it’s why she’s come to terms with asking him to marry her, even while believing that he doesn’t love her.  she never expected her life to go this way, but sometimes dreams don’t always become a reality.

sometimes marriage is not for love, but because it’s something necessary.

that’s why jiae hates the look on minhyuk’s face right now, if only because she’s afraid of wiping his curious, eager expression away.  she knows that what she’s proposing isn’t going to be done out of love on his part, even if it will be on hers  -  moreover, she’s afraid that this is going to turn into another fight.  another night where they spend silent and separated, even if it is the feast of the winter star and they should be spending time together.  

there’s nothing that she can do, though.  after all, she’s made this decision on her own and she has to come to terms with actually doing it  -  no matter the price it comes at.  

she shifts uncomfortably in front of him, her hands squeezed tightly on the ring box behind her back.  in her head, she’s imagining all the ways she wishes this could have gone: someone she loved proposing to her with a goddess pendant and a ring, crying when she saw them and feeling an everlasting love swell up in her.  now, she has the ring but no pendant because she knows minhyuk doesn’t really believe  -  and she wants to cry for another reason.

“ okay ..” she mumbles, not quite meeting him in the eye.  “ i know i didn’t have to, but i ... i thought it was a good idea.” not a lie, really.  but whether or not this is what will be best for them in the long run still remains to be seen.  there’s an awkward pause between them, where minhyuk is all too eager and jiae is way too nervous, but finally she sets the ring box in front of him with averted eyes and waits for him to open it.

“ um .. this isn’t .. how i imagined it would go.” she finally says quietly, biting the inside of her cheek after she does so.  “ but i was wondering if you’d marry me.”  whether or not you love me, please say yes.  “ it’d be better for us .. right?”

;   hello friends! it’s been awhile since i’ve been here bc i was on a short hiatus for a couple of weeks, but i am back ( tomorrow )!!! i’ve decided to drop these two threads below because they’re not really developmental & they’re winter star festival related.  as i hear, we’re supposed to be getting a new event soon after catching up with the main so i want to make way for new interactions! hopefully you understand ;w; with that being said, i’m not sure who is still here out of the people i was plotting with, so if you’re interested in doing so or picking up where we left off, please like this! thank you ;w;

at first the secret gift exchange sounded like fun to sejun so he signed up without thinking. however, once he realized he was generally horrible at figuring out what to give to others, he almost regretted not giving his participation more thought. it was too late to back out though and he considered himself lucky to an extent– he at least got assigned someone he actually knew and was familiar with (although he can’t say he’s talked to his recipient enough to get a feel for what they would like).

so he walks to their house just a few blocks over, thankful that jiae lived on the same street as he did so it wasn’t too far of a commute. he rings the doorbell to her house, gift bag in one hand, the other stuffed into his coat pocket. when the door opens, he holds out the present to the other. “this is for you!” he says, grin on his face wide. “i got you for the gift exchange so i hope it’s okay… and i hope you and your family have a warm winter!”

the gift he settled on after thinking about it for days was an assortment of various sweets like cookies, candies, and even some of his favorite macarons to repay jiae for all the times she’d give him snacks whenever she saw him. she was always nice to him and while he never got a chance too voice it, he appreciated her a lot especially on days when he’d hear others talk about him or his family or feel the heavy stares on himself.

along with the treats, he included a card with a message written inside:

thank you for always saying hi to me with a kind smile and a handful of treats! it always makes my day better so i hope this gift can make you happy too, even if it’s only a little bit. i tried to put in a lot so please feel free to share it with nabi or anyone else you’d like!

･ﾟ✧  𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔,   so when the doorbell rings, jiae jumps a little.  minhyuk has already been out of the house for hours, and with only nabi’s company who simply stares at her doe eyed, the woman is used to quiet days.  the visitor is not unwelcome though, and she hitches her daughter onto her hip before making her way to the entrance hall.

nabi coos when she sees sejun through the window before they open the door.  jiae can’t help but laugh a little, eyes sparkling before mumbling that she must really like him.  the visit is an unexpected surprise, and she tells sejun so when she opens the door with her tiny smile, considering the cold and that school is already out for the holiday.  but when he explains, a sound of understanding escapes her lips and jiae’s smile grows wider, her grip on nabi tighter with one arm as she reaches out with the other.  “ of course it’s okay! i’m glad that it was you.”  jiae says warmly, tucking the gift into nabi’s side, who immediately starts playing with the wrapping.

it’s easy to see what’s inside, and jiae nods her head into the house.  “ do you want to come in and share these with us? after all, we can’t eat them all by ourselves.”

･ﾟ✧  𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈   to draw cheonsa’s name as her secret gift recipient, but perhaps it’s just blind luck that there’s no one else that she’d rather make a present for.  after all, they often meet up to allow their children to share in a play date, even if nabi is much younger than his daughter.  she has high hopes that they’ll grow up to be close friends; that they’re forging a bond that’s unbreakable even as time passes.  that’s why it’s the first time she picks up a brush in practically a year, because there’s something beautiful about the bond their daughters are making and she hopes that he can see it, too.

it takes a few weeks before she’s completed, but the paint finally settles and dries on a scene of their daughters playing in one of yangwon’s rolling fields of grass and flowers.  with little time to spare, considering jiae’s busy schedule taking care of nabi and the numerous art blocks she suffered throughout trying to complete it  -  in the end, she thinks it’s a beautiful portrait of what will come to be.  she wraps the painting in silver and ivory paper, wrapped in twine for an easier way to carry to the winter star viewing.  by the time she sees him, jiae’s shy  -  a little awkward, because this is the first time anyone will have seen her paintings in months.  still, she thinks that there’s no one else she would rather give it to than cheonsa as she hands it over with a smile.

in the end, jiae simply hopes he likes it.

･ﾟ✧  𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔   that jiae is afraid of, starting with nabi and ending with no one else but minhyuk.  these past few weeks with him have been hard: she’s always walking on eggshells since their fight not long ago, and he’s the same as always.  tall, stern, but always so good to nabi that it hurts her to watch.  there are so many things that she wishes  (  like maybe, that minhyuk really could have been the reason nabi was born  )  but these small regrets don’t hold a candle to what could happen if they’re found out.

if the town thinks minhyuk has lied to them, they won’t trust him anymore.  she wonders why he doesn’t see it, or why he’s so adamant about keeping up a charade instead of throwing her under the bus.  she’d rather that happen.  she really would.

but minhyuk is nothing but stubborn, and jiae always suffers under the thought of things spiraling out of their control or getting worse for him.  not when he’s already done so much for her, not when she may ... love him? words that she doesn’t dare speak aloud.  

this is the feast of the winter star though, and she raked through thoughts of gifts to give someone who has given her everything.  and all jiae finds that she wants to do is protect him, no matter what that may cost to her.  so while nabi is napping before the viewing of the winter star, of which they’re both expected to attend, she sits down across from him with a nervous look on her face.  in her hand, a tiny box that holds a ring that’s just his size.  “ .. is it okay if i give you your gift now .. ?”  jiae asks hesitantly, unsure of even herself.

after all, how do you propose to a man you love to protect him, who likely doesn’t love you back?

･ﾟ✧  𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒊   wrapped tightly in a warm coat, but jiae can’t help but wonder if it’s still too cold for her.  this is the first time that she’s brought her daughter out so late at night, especially in the winter months.  but this festival is important, and she wants to bring nabi up in a world where she believes.  after all, jiae lost faith once and had to find her path back to the goddess.  she wants nabi to know the reason for everything.

that’s why the viewing of the winter star is so important  -  to her, and for nabi to see it for the first time, during her first year on this earth.  what seems like the entire town is out and about after a good meal; jiae can’t say that she’s surprised considering the importance of the event.  even if it’s a tradition that’s slowly dying, the town still celebrates.  

as always though, there are whispers.  jiae wears her smile anyway, walking briskly to escape the cold and to protect nabi from hearing things that she doesn’t want her to  -  only for her to bump into eunki gently.  allowing a sigh to escape her lips and shifting nabi on her hip, jiae smiles  -  it’s easier to ignore whispers if she’s locked in conversation of her own.  “ oh .. eunki  -  are you here for the viewing, too?”

･ﾟ✧  𝒅𝒂𝒆𝒉𝒚𝒖𝒏 𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒇   the most talented people that she’s ever met, and jiae has more to be grateful to him for than she can say because he’s helping her document nabi’s life in stages.  she can always count on him to show up at just the right moments with his camera, or to set aside some time to take a little photo shoot every few months to see how much she’s grown.  

sometimes though, jiae wonders if he realizes it himself  -  just how talented he is, and what he could do with that ability to capture the world through his lens.  still, she hopes that he knows, and if not, that one day if even a little, she can help him on the road to believing it.

today though, is a special day:  it’s nabi’s first feast of the winter star, and even though they plan to spend it privately at home, she still wants to take her to the viewing.  part of her wonders if daehyun will be there, to take a picture of her sleepy girl staring at the night’s sky.  maybe too, he will receive the small gift of appreciation she prepared for him: a small camera keychain with his initial engraved at the side.  it’s not a lot, not enough  -  especially with all that he does for her and for nabi, but she hopes that he’ll accept it nonetheless.

song jiae, 27, currently a stay at home mom.  formerly part of the town, left for university, and came back in march of 2019.

well known for being a sweetheart and always helpful to anyone who needed it in the town as she was growing up.  basically, she was pretty dependable

lost her parents when she was fourteen, so her elder brother became her guardian ( he was 26 at the time ).  he was living away from the town at the time so he came back and brought his wife with him, who wasn’t happy about having to take care of a fourteen year old AND live in a small country town

the last gift her mother gave her before she died was a music box, and jiae treasures it.  now she collects them, so that’s why her favoured item is a music box

honestly? her older brother dotes on her.  he’s super attached

left for university to pursue a degree in the arts so that she could start illustrating things like books, or paint, etc.

school was tough on her though, and left her a bit jaded about it.  she never felt good enough, and eventually started to grow to dislike her work in general

uni wasn’t all downs though.  she met a boy that she fell in love with because she’s a soft baby who falls in love way too easy !!! city boys suck tho

ended up getting pregnant and when she told him about it, he dipped.  flat out just left her because men are trash !

so she was dealing with a broken heart, pregnancy, and a major that she was growing to hate all by herself.  jiae was really scared to call and tell her brother about it, but eventually she needed to.  she was afraid he’d be disappointed, but all he did was tell her to come back home.  it didn’t help that minhyuk came flying to her and told her to tell everyone that the baby was his to save her from the town gossips 

she wasn’t sure about it but eventually agreed ...

in the time that she was away, her brother had split from his wife and bought a new house in the town.  for a time she lived with him, up until she had the baby

when she had baby nabi in april ( !!! ), she moved in with minhyuk a few weeks after both to give her brother some space and also, because he put his name on the birth certificate as nabi’s father ... so now she really has to keep up the image that they’re going to be a family even if it makes her super uncomfortable

she feels like she’s trapping minhyuk but every time she brings it up he gets mad at her about it.  doesn’t help that she’s super timid so this kind of stresses her out and makes her distant ... 

all in all though, she’s pretty happy.  she’s taking care of nabi well, and as much as she’s nervous about the situation with minhyuk, she .. kind of .. wants him to be nabi’s dad even if she’s afraid he felt obligated to take that step

but! who knows what the future will bring.  she’s hoping to maybe fall in love with art again now that nabi is finally settling down and getting used to the world, but again! who knows!

small plots !

rumours are bubbling up because this is a small town and jiae came back pregnant and unwed …… even stranger that it’s the assistant mayor that apparently fathered the babe? she hears them and smiles about it but you know she’s inwardly super upset so it’s either time to spread them yourself OR make her feel better

childhood friends, crushes, rivals, etc.  they could have either outgrown this and be awkward or ignore each other now, or !!! still have the same kind of feelings for each other !!

someone she’d always write to while she was away in uni that she misses.  could be that they’re a little sad that jiae didn’t tell them she was pregnant in their letters and now doesn’t know how to react to her now that she DOES have a baby

someone who remembers the amazing paintings she used to do back when she was younger and misses them ... and doesn’t know why she won’t pick up a brush

or you know, someone who was jealous of her artistic talents idk !
