To be honest, I’ve kind of lost interest in Murder Drones lately, but a special about J came out recently and I just got an idea for some art—plus, I’m not in a great headspace right now, so I felt like drawing something like this

probably my second favorite set of cosplays, behind J. i don't know, i've just always loved these cosplays despite not wearing them due to fear of being harassed by teenage boys lol.

definitely my favorite batch of cosplays, but that's maybe because i'm biased for J. yes, i even designed my own versions of prom and camp J (before the newest short came out), and i really like them, even if camp J could be worked on a little more.

if i had a nickel for every time Glitch featured a transgender (MtF) character, whose name starts with a J, who inadvertently hurt people due to having lost someone in the past that they greatly cared about. who pretends like nothing bad has ever happened to them but honestly sucks at it. who is related to a song from the late twentieth century in some way. who can be genuine at times but refuses to let their mask slip around anyone. whose second language might as well be lying.
i’d have two nickels, which is nice, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

my thoughts on one specific scene in the new short.
tl;dr: i love how the phone scene in the newest Murder Drones short emphasizes the power dynamic between Cyn and J, and how truly vindictive she is towards the disassembly drone. :(

this damn woman is so terrified of Cyn that the minute she hears the phone ring, she sobers up nigh instantly. one moment, completely wasted on battery acid and being herself. the next? there is not even a hint of being drunk left in that face; her anxiety is a larger driving force than whatever she can do to let loose and relieve stress.
oh, and the fact that on the phone call itself, she can't even keep her corporate bootlicker mask on for long because of her boss's idea of an in-person meet-up. she has to be reassured (i see it more as a manipulation tactic than anything else) to believing that she's on the correct side -- that she's on the right team.
i can't help but rave about how goddamn right i was. that post i made some week or so ago about how i wrote a bunch of paragraphs about how Cyn is a terrible person to J? that's obvious enough, but with what we learn in this video alone, i knew damn well that she was emotionally abusive to J. she is just as much a victim of the Solver as the other two, and it's honestly a little sad that some people are only realizing that after seeing this short.
can i also just say that i really like how the lighting and effects were done in that scene? from the minute she goes back into the room once the phone rings, the room is somewhat light, with the phone faintly glowing red.
you can just tell from the way the frame looks that there's something off about the phone, but we don't know why until J picks up. when she does and gives Cyn the information she wants, the room is almost immediately darker. it becomes much more obvious once Cyn suggests the idea of meeting in-person rather than a follow-up.
this part could be me picking at straws, but the phone looks to be glowing brighter, as it is the only clear light we see in the room. J's visor is obscured by her hat, and her tail is down on the ground because she's scared. this moment in the scene wants you to pay very close attention to what Cyn is telling her. we know at this point that Cyn holds a lot of weight over J just from her reaction to the suggestion alone, and the fact the phone becomes the most prominent lighting in the scene only emphasizes this.
it's not even just the power that Cyn holds over her, but the fact that she's scared to even see her in the first place really settles it for me. i always suspected that JcJenson fell with humanity and was just something that J pretended was still relevant. Cyn is the main reason why she even still believes that the company is alive and relevant to her life, and she makes sure to keep J under her control as much as possible.
"Anxiety detected. Do not be afraid, J."
this single frame is so much more pixelated in a way that i refuse to believe is not intentional. it looks more distorted in the way that is supposed to further convey the power dynamic between Cyn and J, and how corrosive (if that's a proper way to use the word?) her manipulation is. the red lighting is more powerful than ever, illuminating J more strongly than in any other scene with this phone. she wants to hang up because she doesn't want to see Cyn at all -- the idea of it makes her terrified at this moment -- but she can't bring herself to actually do so the minute her boss points out how nervous she is.
oh, i'd also like to point out (while not shown here) that J was literally shaking right before she was about to hang up. her eyes move around very subtly as she listens, and even as she starts to lower the phone, and her pigtails move a little more than they would if she was standing completely still while listening. while the eyes thing can be explained by a drone's eyes shaking when they're scared, her hair moving subtly suggests to me that she's shaking in fear. i think it's more obvious when she is stopped by Cyn and the camera pans to showing J's face again that her arm shakes a little before she raises the phone back toward her face.
two things about this specific part.
first of all, the room is still really dark, with only J's lights and the phone to illuminate the room, and it's clear which one is the most prevalent. the phone almost overshadows J from just the lighting alone.
to add to that, what Cyn tells her directly parallels what J tells V in the finale, that she's "aligned with the correct side" for a rational reason. she's continuing to keep J under her grasp by reassuring her that this is how it was meant to be, and nothing could be done about it. despite her fears, she has to be deluded into thinking that this is all according to plan, and it works.
the next point is, i absolutely love how the camera pans towards J's stress toy. it reckons back not only to its existence and what its purpose is meant to be, but the fact that it's obvious J is very anxious about seeing Cyn again. i also want to think that the way it shows the stress ball being much closer to the camera (and thus, looking larger) than J coincides with how stressed and terrified she is about getting a phone call, and meeting Cyn in person, although that could be more of a stretch.
i have always interpreted this last part of the scene as J being on the brink of a mini panic attack, with how she appeared to be breathing before and after she actually hung up the phone. the poor girl sounded like she was about to start crying with that exhale she let out, but she ends up suppressing it and deciding to sit there, holding the worker drone head close to her as she coils her tail around herself, and lowering her head. attempting to give herself the comfort that she really needs from another person.

i loved this video so much, but for whatever reason, that phone scene, and alternatively, J's struggles really stuck with me. if you interpreted that scene differently than i did, that's perfectly fine! i just had a random spout of thoughts about it, and i wanted to throw them all out somewhere. if you read the whole post, that's awesome.
I lack the words and ability to explain how much I love J. Like I’m shaking, I feel physical pain from the excitement, and I feel like I need to tear off my skin. All because of a mini episode and a merch drop.
okay, so. two points i'd like to make now that i've seen it.
1; ohmygodohmygodohmYGOD the J MERCH. i love it, i want it, i need it. i've never ran so fucking fast with cash in my hand to pay for something in my life. i will wear that hoodie like it's my personal honor. i love J, and i love hoodies; how could i not??
2; THE OILROSE CRUMBS?
seriously, girl, just go kiss her already! it's damn well obvious that you two have cared about each other for a while.
