Gabrielle stood from the bench when she spotted Zahra approaching her at the park and waved. âHey, Zahra,â She greeted the other happily. While her brother hadnât maintained a relationship with his daughter for a while, Gabby had done her best to do so, not wanting to miss out on her nieceâs life. âHowâve you been? Iâm sorry I havenât been able to see you in a couple of weeks. Work was strangely chaotic. There were events and then someone got sick. I ended up working extra hours and days off.â

One good thing about moving to Chicago was that Val could actually spend time with her aunt. Despite what her and Samâs relationship was, Gabby had always tried to keep a relationship with the two of them, and Zahra appreciated it. âHey!â Zahra said excitedly as she approached Gabby in the park. âOh god, donât even worry about it! Itâs been crazy on my end too, so I totally get it. How have you been otherwise? Everything good?â

Around her new boss, Bridge tried to straighten up her act, be more professional. A breathed out a low âooftâ at her bossesâ words, âgod, youâre right,â she rushed to agree, frowning at the man in question, âwhy do so many incredible women waste their time on trash men? What a waste, I think, every woman could do better.â
Zahra laughed and rolled her eyes. âGod, you are so right,â she agreed, taking a sip from her latte. âI canât even say I donât know why women suffer through terrible men because I held out hope for my ex for far too long, and it is extremely embarrassing. Men are such a waste of time,â she joked, laughing at herself.Â
People watching was a hobby of Bridgeâs, peering into the lives of others was a welcome distraction from her own chaos. Twirling the straw in her drink, Bridge watched on at the couple in front of them, the tension between the two clear to see, âso whatâs their story?â the woman mused, glancing to the person beside her with a challenging smirk, âfive bucks says theyâre exes reunited.â // @hocstartersâ
Zahra laughed lightly as she looked over to see the people Bridge was referring to, taking a sip from her drink. âHonestly, I think heâs married and theyâre trying not to cross a line,â she said with a shrug before breaking out into a laugh. âEither way, she can do better,â she added with a smirk.Â

As important as Sam was to James, Zahra was just as and he felt bad that he hadnât seen her as much as he wanted to over the last few months. With everything going on in his personal life and with his mom, it was far and few that he was seeing his friends. They were like a part of his family and he felt guilty that he hadnât seen both her and Val in a few weeks. So with a quick text to make sure she was free and at home, James made his way over to his place. A bottle of wine for Zahra and a small gift for Val were both nestled into a bag that he held in his hand. With a wide grin as he finally reached her place, James knocked on the door.Â
Zahra was sitting in her dining room with Val, who was working away on her multiplication tables, when the knock came on their door. Zahra smiled as Val perked up. âThat must be your Uncle James, you wanna go answer it?â she offered. Val nodded excitedly running up to open the door. âUncle James!â she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around James, as Zahra made her way to the doorway, smiling at her friend. âHey, James! How are you? Should I make us some coffee, make use of my fancy coffee maker?â
You're a strong ass woman and I admire you.
Anonymously tell me your opinion of me and I cannot respond.Â
I touch myself whenever I think about you. More specifically, I rub my temples because I get a headache because youâre awful.Â
It hadnât been a great week. And maybe a loud event focused on coupling people up wasnât a great way to end it. Gus had gone back and forth on it- on one hand, he couldnât sit in his RV and let every event to potentially meet someone pass him by. He needed to at least try. On the other hand, his lapses had been worse lately, and he was tired. Work wasnât great. Thoughts werenât great. But⊠he could always get drunk, right? So heâd dressed nicely and tied his hair back, but he was definitely there mostly for the booze, finding himself being that guy who was posted up at the bar, chatting with the bartender for a little while before he was left to his own devices. Heâd been on his second rum and coke, when for a second as he blinked, his mind went almost numb. A fuzziness, like cottonballs, and his gaze trained on the icecubes floating in his drink as they moved, just so. He was used to it- unable to think properly. Focus, focus, focus⊠what were you just doing⊠just saying⊠was I on the phone? No. Talking to the bartender. He left. Sitting. Youâre just sitting. Another blink and it was gone, and he realized someone was there. âOh shit, sorry, I musta-⊠yeah, had a bit of a zone out there. Howâs your night going?âÂ
@codstartersâ
Zahra sat down at the bar, the seats crammed a little too close for her liking, but she didnât really want to be mingling at the moment, especially after her date had gotten caught up at work, leaving her alone indefinitely. She placed her phone facedown on the bartop and ordered herself a glass of wine, which got the attention of the person next to her. âOh, no youâre totally okay,â she insisted. âTheyâre cramming us way too closely in here,â she joked. âMaybe itâs a way to get people to mingle.â
âSo, do you think itâs worth it to go to jail because I shoved a stylus up my clientâs ass over multiple changes in my design?â Jamie asked his friend as he plopped himself down on the seat across the otherâs. He was supposed to be finished with that particular client already but with all the revision they wanted, it was taking longer than usual. The graphic designer started with traditional methods until they realized that the revisions might be endless and moved to digital. âTheyâre being a pain in my ass.â @codstartersâ
Zahra understood the frustration of people all the time. When she first started her business, and she was the sales department, she constantly wanted to slam her head against the wall with how people could be. âHonestly, it might be,â she said with a shrug. âAnd I know a good lawyer that would be happy to help you out if thatâs the case. I can already see the defense. âYouâre honor, they were a pain in my ass, so I became a pain in theirs.ââ

âI know youâre all, Girl Boss, self-made CEO but Zahra, please,â she slid down in the seat across from her friend, giving her a half teasing, half desperate look, âyouâve got get out more often. I barely know what the hell is going on with you now. How are you? Howâs Princess Val? Catch me up!â
âHey, Iâm also a mother,â she pointed out with a laugh, even though she knew deep down her friend was right. She needed a life outside of work and her kid. âAnd you can always text me to know whatâs going on in my life,â she pointed out in a teasing tone. âIâm doing well though. Sam isnât being a total idiot, Iâm kind of dating someone, Val is doing so well. She starts soccer next month, which will be a lot of fun. How about you, babe, whatâs been going on with you?â

âSo what Iâm hearing that when I need a coffee in the middle of the day, to stop by your place instead.â James grinned over at Zahra, shaking his head some as he took the cup from her. âYou know, so you can put your espresso machine to good use of course.â He laughed softly, taking a sip, impressed with how good it was. Maybe he really should just stop by her place for his daily coffees. âThings with Madi are going really, really well.â He couldnât help but grin at the mention of her. âI gave her a promise ring right around Christmas time.â Still beyond ecstatic of how things were going between the two of them. âHow have you been though?â He asked over the rim of his cup before he took another sip of it.Â
âThatâs absolutely what Iâm saying,â Zahra joked lightly. âBut seriously, you know youâre always welcome here... to use my espresso machine, of course,â she added playfully. She was so busy these days that she didnât get to see James that much, and truthfully, she wouldnât mind the company of her old friend. Her face lit up as she listened to James talk about Madi. âDid you really?â she asked excitedly. âThatâs amazing! Iâm so happy for you,â she told him genuinely. After everything James has been through, he deserved to be happy with someone. âIâm doing pretty well. Iâm still seeing that lawyer, which is going really well. And things with Sam are slowly getting better, and thatâs been a huge relief, if Iâm being totally honest.â
