"The thing is I'm pretty sure no one else sees any of that." Zane sighs and looks up from his lap. "And how the fuck can I not compare myself to Jasper when that's what everyone else does? I still don't... um. I'm just a fundamentally shitty person, though."

"If those are my options; I’d rather just resort to some melatonin and finally get some sleep. Snow White would be cool, except that I don’t have a prince to wake me up and I’d probably just slowly become insane having dreams that could help everyone out and not being able to wake up and share them."

"Wait, how did Snow White not die? Didn't she need food?"

"The question is, do I trust any of the freshmen to have enough control over their powers to depend on them for anything?" She’s seen a fourteen year old with chameleon powers get stuck a neon orange color before, and she’d rather not end up in a permanent sleep. "I don’t want to be Snow White because of a slip up."

"It's either Snow White or hallucinations and honestly, Snow White has seven slaves to do shit for her."

"I will put you in eternal darkness if your paint shit ever gets anywhere near my bed, I swear to God."

"I wasn’t expecting anything, except decency. Guess you’re not really familiar with the concept. Like I said I’ll just be a mindless thrall zane. So no need to get your balls in a twist. And before you throw the whole drama queen act, just remember it was you who freaked out doll-face. What couldn’t handle a little kiss? And here I thought you were the big bad Zane, I guess you’re right. You always come second best to Jasper."

"You still don’t get it. I could fucking deal with being treated like shit if it meant getting close to you. But it doesn’t matter right? You could never look at me that way, so I might as well just shut up and continue to be a mindless thrall."

"I don’t… What do you want from me at this point, Duncan? Honestly. What do you want me to say to you? Do you want me to say that I’ll never talk to you again? Or do you want me to tell you that nothing will change between us? Maybe that I’ll revamp my entire self so that you and I can go fucking steady? That, oh, sometimes you’ll think that you’re dying soon and you’ll kiss me and that’ll just suddenly be okay?” Zane’s voice drips with ugly sarcasm that he knows shouldn’t be coming out of his mouth, but at this point he can’t find it in himself to care.

"Not being sure is a clear sign. You thought I didn’t know, but how stupid do you think I am? Zane I love and I probably always will. That doesn’t mean that you don’t suck as a friend or even as a person."

"Oh, fuck off, Duncan."

"Not sure."

"So when are you gonna stop acting like you care?"

"Care about you or about you kissing me?"

"I doubt he didn’t at least have people making sure he stayed awake, I’m going at this solo," she counters with a shrug of her shoulders. "I’ve slept 18 hours straight before, I can top his record."

"If you looked around, you could probably find someone with sleep manipulation to help you out, right? A freshman or something?" Zane has no idea if anyone at this school possesses hypnokinesis, but he figures that it's worth a shot.

"That’s over with. We both know that. Look if you need me to stay away from you until you feel comfortable enough to hang, I’ll understand."

"Besides the lake thing, yeah." He looks down, slightly ashamed. "If I’m going out, I’m gonna go out in style. Gotta live it up while I can."

"Oh, and your definition of style is refried beans and bodies of water?"

"They cheated though," she says with a smile, amused by his response. "That was a controlled experiment with stimulus to keep them awake and all I’ve got is caffeine."

"But wasn't there that kid who had his school project thing? He went 11 days without stimulants, right? And then slept for 14 hours straight." Zane definitely doesn't know this information because he tried to beat those numbers his freshman year.

"I totally forgot about your whole thing with her leading you on or whatever. Just forget it."
