How We Like To Write Music Over At Summertime Dropouts
Hey dudes! We decided to make a blog about our writing process for the first of our two, new EP's coming out in July. The first question that we always get is, "who writes the songs?" Well, It's a combination of the whole crew! Plus, there are a few, close friends who help as well. It's rare that we do any initial writing with all of us together. Each of us own a copy of Pro Tools, Steven Slate Drums 4, and Pod Farm, which makes our individual writing process much easier. From there, we start a group Dropbox folder where we stuff a ton of random ideas, (guitar riffs, licks, leads, beats, etc) that we come up with. The first EP to be released will have seven songs, and the next EP will have 8. However, we chose these 15 songs out of a possible 30 that we already had finished! After we get a solid group of ideas, we begin to put songs together with all of the pieces that we like. It's a long process of fine-tuning that begins at that stage. There have been multiple instances where we have had to scrap songs, mix and match parts, and even turn two songs into one! Dave is the one who writes all of the lyrics. He will take input from all of us, but otherwise, he leads the charge on everything lyrically. We have also been lucky enough to work with Clint Gibbs as a producer on our music. He has worked with many Top 40 artists, and he is great at helping us keep our tracks at the top of our game. Before we hit the studio to record these EP's, the demo tracks sound like completed songs. We call it, "Dress Rehearsal" for our music! Writing while in the studio is not something we like to do. There may still be production and extra creativity added to the songs while in the studio, but by then, the songs are finished, and the game plan is set it stone. We absolutely, cannot wait for you guys to hear these 15, new songs! And, we hope you enjoy then just as much as the tracks on our album, "Rewind."
